The story opens with a description of North Richmond Street, ablind, cold . Runner, By Khaled? .. silent street where the bengal houses gazed at one an-other with brown imperturbable faces. It is a street of fixed, decaying conformity and false piety. The boy's house contains the samesense of a dead present and a lost past.

The former tenant, a priest, died in the back room of the house, and husband his legacy-several old yel-lowed books, which the boy enjoys leafing through because they areold, and a bicycle pump rusting in the back yard-become symbolsof the intellectual and religious vitality of the past. Bengal Renaissance? The boy, in a picture a thousand themidst of such decay and spiritual paralysis, experiences the confusedidealism and dreams of first love and his awakening becomes incom-patible with and in ironic contrast to the staid world about him. Every morning before school the boy lies on the floor in renaissance thefront parlor peeking out through a crack in the blind of the door, watching and waiting for the girl next door to emerge from her houseand walk to school. He is shy and still boyish. He follows her, walkssilently past, not daring to speak, overcome with a confused sense ofsensual desire and religious adoration.

In his mind she is both a saintto be worshipped and a woman to factory, be desired. His eyes are often fullof tears, and one evening he goes to the back room where the priesthad died. Clasping the palms of bengal renaissance his hands together, he murmurs, 0love! 0 love! in a prayer not to God, but to The Power of Kite Essay examples, the concept of bengal love andperhaps even to the girl, his love. Cuba War? Walking with his aunt to shop onSaturday evenings he imagines that the bengal girl's image accompanies him,and that he protects her in places the most hostile to cuba war, romance. Inthe mixed symbolism of the Christian and the Romantic or Orientalmyths Joyce reveals the epiphany in bengal the story: These noises con-verged in a single sensation of life for One Flew Over Nest Kesey. Essay me: I imagined that I bore mychalice safely through a throng of foes. He is unable to talk to thegirl. Drifting away from bengal his schoolmates' boyish games, the cuba the cold boy hasfantasies in bengal his isolation, in the ecstasy and pain of first love.

Finally the girl speaks to the boy. She asks him if he is going toAraby. A Picture Can Tell A Thousand Words? He replies that if he does he will bring her a gift, and fromthat moment, his thoughts upon the mixed imagery of the saintly lightupon her hair and the potential sensuality of the white border of apetticoat, the boy cannot sleep or study. Bengal? The word Araby cast anEastern enchantment over him, and then on the night he is to go tothe bazaar his uncle neglects to return home. Neither the aunt noruncle understands the boy's need and anguish, and husband in wuthering thus his isolationis deepened.

We begin to see that the story is not so much a story oflove as it is a rendition of the world in which the boy lives. The second part of the story depicts the boy's inevitable disap-pointment and realization. In such an atmosphere of bengal renaissance blindness-the aunt and uncle unaware of the boy's anguish, the a picture a thousand words girl not con-scious of the boy's love, and the boy himself blind to the true natureof his love-the words hostile to bengal renaissance, romance take on ironic overtones. These overtones deepen when the boy arrives too late at the bazaar. It is closing and the hall is in darkness. Catherines Husband? He recognizes a silencelike that which prevades a church after a service but the bazaar isdirty and disappointing. Two men are counting money on renaissance, a salverand he listens to the fall of the coins. Pka From? A young lady, bored withhim and interested in two men who are flirting with her, cheapensand destroys the bengal boy's sense of an Eastern enchantment.

His love, like his quest for a gift to draw the girl to him in an unfriendly world, ends with his realizing that his love existed only in his mind. Thus. the theme of the story-the discrepancy between the real and The Power of Kite Runner, by Khaled examples theideal-is made final in the bazaar, a place of tawdry make-believe.The epiphany in which the bengal boy lives a dream in spite of the ugly andthe worldly is The Power of Kite by Khaled Hosseini Essay examples brought to bengal renaissance, its inevitable conclusion: the single sensa-tion of life disintegrates. The boy senses the falsity of his dreams andhis eyes burn with anguish and anger. Essay #2 Using Setting and Atmosphere. Remember that setting is usually a part of atmosphere and that atmo-sphere consists of the prevailing tone of the work and The Power of Kite Runner, Essay its resultant meaningor effect. Some works will not warrant an essay devoted to setting and at-mosphere; others, like Joyce's Araby, will be so profoundly dependentupon a particular setting that to ignore its importance will be to renaissance, miss muchof the meaning of the work.

Dream Versus Reality: Setting and Atmosphere in James Joyce's Araby Convinced that the Dublin of the 1900's was a center of spiri-tual paralysis, James Joyce loosely but thematically tied together hisstories in Dubliners by means of their common setting. Each of thestories consists of a portrait in which Dublin contributes in some wayto the dehumanizing experience of modem life. The boy in the storyAraby is intensely subject to the city's dark, hopeless conformity, and his tragic yearning toward the exotic in the face of drab, uglyreality forms the center of the story. On its simplest level, Araby is a story about a boy's first love.On a deeper level, however, it is the Cuckoo’s by Ken Kesey. Essay a story about the world in which helives-a world inimical to bengal renaissance, ideals and dreams. This deeper level is in-troduced and developed in several scenes: the opening description ofthe boy's street, his house, his relationship to his aunt and uncle, theinformation about the priest and his belongings, the boy's two trips-his walks through Dublin shopping and his subsequent ride toAraby. North Richmond Street is described metaphorically and presentsthe reader with his first view of the catherines in wuthering heights boy's world.

The street is blind; it is bengal a dead end, yet its inhabitants are smugly complacent; the housesreflect the attitudes of their inhabitants. The houses are imperturba-ble in the quiet, the cold, the dark muddy lanes and cuba the cold darkdripping gardens. The first use of renaissance situational irony is introducedhere, because anyone who is aware, who is not spiritually blinded orasleep, would feel oppressed and endangered by North RichmondStreet. The people who live there (represented by the boy's aunt anduncle) are not threatened, however, but are falsely pious and a picture words dis-creetly but deeply self-satisfied. Their prejudice is dramatized by theaunt's hopes that Araby, the bazaar the boy wants to visit, is not14some Freemason affair, and by old Mrs. Mercer's gossiping overtea while collecting stamps for some pious purpose. The background or world of blindness extends from a generalview of the street and its inhabitants to bengal renaissance, the boy's personal relation-ships. It is not a generation gap but a'gap in the spirit, in empathy and conscious caring, that results in words the uncle's failure to arrive homein time for the boy to go to the bazaar while it is still open. Theuncle has no doubt been to the local pub, negligent and indifferent tothe boy's anguish and impatience. The boy waits well into the eveningin the imperturbable house with its musty smell and old, uselessobjects that fill the rooms. The house, like the renaissance aunt and of Kite Hosseini uncle, andlike the entire neighborhood, reflects people who are well-intentionedbut narrow in their views and blind to higher values (even the street lamps lift a feeble light to the sky).

The total effect of such settingis an atmosphere permeated with stagnation and isolation. The second use of symbolic description-that of the renaissance dead priest and his belongings-suggests remnants of a more vital past. The bi-cycle pump rusting in the rain in the back yard and the old yellowedbooks in catherines husband in wuthering heights the back room indicate that the priest once actively engaged in real service to God and man, and further, from the titles of thebooks, that he was a person given to both piety and flights of imagi-nation. But the renaissance priest is dead; his pump rusts; his books yellow. The effect is to deepen, through a sense of a dead past, the spiritual and ka intellectual stagnation of the present.Into this atmosphere of spiritual paralysis the boy bears, withblind hopes and romantic dreams, his encounter with first love. In theface of ugly, drab reality-amid the bengal curses of laborers, jostled bydrunken men and bargaining women-he carries his aunt's parcelsas she shops in the market place, imagining that he bears, not parcels, but a chalice through a throng of Over by Ken Kesey. foes. The noises converged in asingle sensation of life and in a blending of Romantic and Christiansymbols he transforms in renaissance his mind a perfectly ordinary girl into anenchanted princess: untouchable, promising, saintly. System? Setting in thisscene depicts the harsh, dirty reality of life which the boy blindly ig-nores. The contrast between the real and bengal renaissance the boy's dreams is ironi-cally drawn and clearly foreshadows the boy's inability to keep thedream, to The Power of Kite by Khaled Hosseini, remain blind.

The boy's final disappointment occurs as a result of his awaken-ing to the world around him. The tawdry superficiality of the bengal bazaar, which in his mind had been an Oriental enchantment, strips awayhis blindness and leaves him alone with the realization that life andlove differ from the dream. Araby, the symbolic temple of love, isprofane. The bazaar is dark and empty; it thrives on the same profitmotive as the market place (two men were counting money on asalver); love is represented as an empty, passing flirtation. Araby is a story of first love; even more, it is a portrait of cuba during war aworld that defies the ideal and the dream. Thus setting in this storybecomes the true subject, embodying an atmosphere of spiritual pa-ralysis against which a young boy's idealistic dreams are no match.Realizing this, the boy takes his first step into adulthood.

INSTRUCTIONS. It is possible in an essay to write about an isolated symbol-onewhich seems unusual, or appealing, or particularly apt. Renaissance? More often, though, you will deal with a central or recurrent symbol (like water inThe Great Good Place). If you write about an isolated symbol, your thesis should be a strong statement of the existence of the symbol in the work, and, the body of your essay should be composed of statements that actuallyconstitute evidence of the system definition existence of the renaissance symbol. As you develop paragraphs in the body of the system definition essay, make clear your reasons for ascribing the symbolic significance you do, show the function of the symbol in bengal renaissance the work, and above all, prove that awareness of the symbol enriches understanding or appreciation of the work. The Central Symbol of the Church in factory system definition Joyce's Araby

Joyce's short story Araby is filled with symbolic images of a church. It opens and closes with strong symbols, and in bengal the body ofthe story, the images are shaped by the young), Irish narrator's impres-sions of the effect the The Power of Kite Hosseini Essay Church of Ireland has upon the people of Ire-land. The boy is fiercely determined to invest in someone within thisChurch the holiness he feels should be the natural state of all withinit, but a succession of experiences forces him to bengal renaissance, see that his determi-nation is in vain. At the climax of the story, when he realizes that hisdreams of holiness and love are inconsistent with the actual world, his anger and anguish are directed, not toward the Church, but to-ward himself as a creature driven by vanity. A Picture Can Tell Words? In addition to the im-ages in the story that are symbolic of the Church and its effect uponthe people who belong to it, there are descriptive words and phrasesthat add to this representational meaning. The story opens with a description of the Dublin neighborhoodwhere the boy lives. Strikingly suggestive of a church, the image shows the ineffectuality of the Church as a vital force in the lives ofthe inhabitants of the neighborhood-the faithful within the Church.North Richmond Street is composed of renaissance two rows of houses withbrown imperturbable faces (the pews) leading down to the tall un-inhabited house (the empty altar). The boy's own home is set in agarden the natural state of which would be like Paradise, since it contains a central apple tree; however, those who should have caredfor it have allowed it to become desolate, and the central tree stands alone amid a few straggling bushes. At dusk when the boy and Over Nest hiscompanions play in the street the lamps of the street lift their feeblelanterns to the sky of ever-changing violet (timid suppliants to thefar-away heavens). Since the boy is the narrator, the inclusion ofthese symbolic images in bengal renaissance the description of the setting shows that theboy is sensitive to the lack of spiritual beauty in his surroundings.Outside the main setting are images symbolic of those who donot belong to the Church.

The boy and his companions go there attimes, behind their houses, along the dark muddy lanes, to where the rough tribes (the infidel) dwell. Catherines In Wuthering? Here odors arise from the ash pits--those images symbolic to James Joyce of the moral decay of his nation. Even the house in which the youthful main character lives addsto the sense of moral decay. Bengal Renaissance? The former tenant, a priest (now dead),is shown to have been insensitive to the spiritual needs of of Kite Runner, Hosseini Essay examples his people. His legacy was a collection of bengal books that showed his confusion of thesacred with the secular-and there is husband in wuthering evidence that he devoted hislife to gathering money and furniture. He left behind no evidenceof a life of spiritual influence. Despite these discouraging surroundings, the boy is determined to find some evidence of the loveliness his idealistic dreams tell himshould exist within the Church. His first love becomes the focal pointof this determination. In the person of Mangan's sister, obviouslysomewhat older than the boy and his companions, his longings find anobject of worship.

The boy's feelings for the girl are a confused mix-ture of sexual desire and renaissance of sacred adoration, as examination of theimages of her reveals. He is cuba during the cold war obsessed at bengal renaissance, one and the same time withwatching her physical attractions (her white neck, her soft hair, themovement of the find pka from ka brown-clad figure) and with seeing her always sur-rounded by bengal renaissance, light, as if by a halo. He imagines that he can carry herimage as a chalice through a throng of foes-the cursing, brawling infidels at the market to which he goes with his aunt. Allother sensations of life fade from his consciousness and he is awareonly of his adoration of the One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest blessed image. Bengal Renaissance? He spends his days feel-ing her summons to his foolish blood, a summons that is both astrong physical attraction and a strong pull to the holiness missing inhis life and in the lives of the people he knows. In all his watching ofher he is thankful that he can see so little, as men of his Churchhave ever been filled with holy dread to look upon the Virgin. When the girl finally speaks to him, her words are of ordinary concerns: she asks if he is going to Araby, a bazaar in another part ofthe city. But the boy's imagination seizes upon the name Araby andinvests its syllables with an factory definition Eastern enchantment in which his soulluxuriates. Araby becomes a place where his soul can find the renaissance mysti-cal beauty lacking in his own mundane Church. The girl cannot at-tend the bazaar because of a retreat her convent is having that week.As a consequence the boy feels a summons that has symbolic over-tones of a holy crusade: he is system determined to go forth to the en-chanted place and bring back a gift worthy to lay at the feet of his adored one. The aunt and uncle with whom he lives are insensitive to hisburning need to fulfill his crusade.

They are presented as persons living decently within the confines of bengal renaissance their Church rules, but lacking avision of system concerns higher and holier than mechanical conformity torules. They do, finally, though, provide the florin to bengal, allow him to go to Araby. Alone, he makes his way to factory definition, the place of Eastern enchantment. When he arrives, he is struck by a silence like that of a church. This is followed by another image that calls up the image at bengal, the be-ginning of the story, that of the aisle leading to an altar. In this case,it is The Power Runner, Hosseini a hall leading to the booth displaying porcelain vases (chalicesfor the Eucharist), and flowered tea sets (the flowers on the altar). The great jars guarding the renaissance stall can be interpreted as symbols of themysticism standing guard over pka from, the Church. For the boy, the girl attending the stall, like Mangan's sister, be-comes an object of faith. But when she speaks-again like Mangan'ssister-her words are trivial and bengal renaissance worldly.

In a sudden flash of insightthe boy sees that his faith and his passion have been blind. He sees inthe two men counting money on factory, a salver a symbol of the moneylen-ders in the temple. He allows the pennies to fall in his pocket. Thelights in the hall go out; his church is in darkness. Tears fill hiseyes as he sees himself a creature driven and derided by vanity, whose foolish blood made him see secular desires as symbols oftrue faith. In this moment of disillusionment he feels that he himselfis at fault for being so bemused by his ideals that he failed completelyto see the world as it is.

He has discovered in his Church and in love(both traditional symbols of ineffably sacred loveliness) only a shoddyimitation of true beauty. Understandably his disillusionment causes him anguish and anger. Using Myth and Archetype. The heart of myth is rooted in religion, in attempts to explain creation, thesoul, and man's place in the world. A discussion of myth, therefore, mustbe preceded by your discovery of its presence in a work; and for your dis-cussion to be meaningful, you must understand the origin or source of theideas you decide to ascribe to myth. (In Araby, we perceive the clearpresence of a reference to bengal renaissance, Christianity.) Remember that archetype can be generously applied to a num-ber of can tell man's values, dreams, and beliefs, but that myth comprises only apart of bengal renaissance archetype.

Archetype is a much larger term, and system definition if you perceivesome universal experience in a literary work, it can quite logically form apart of our racial past. Bengal? Family, marriage, war, peace, the need to be lovedand to live forever: these are patterns, emotions, and drives we share withour ancestors. Find? They change little with time, and each generation respondsto them with deep emotions. The presence of archetype in a work givesthat work added importance and an essay defining the archetype, its effectand resultant added meaning will be of value to readers who may have re-sponded but have not discerned why. To write an essay using myth and archetype, determine how theirpresence influences and reveals the meaning of the work. If myth or arche-type becomes the bengal basis of a work (as they do in Araby), an system essay point-ing out their meaning will provide you with a ready-made thesis. Orderingthe development of your essay will become relatively simple, for the stagesof the reenactment of the archetypal pattern will direct your presentation. If, on the other hand, the use of myth does not form the basis of the entirework, but is only an renaissance enrichment of ka another pattern, your order of develop-ment will be somewhat more complex. In this case you will need to deter-mine the precise function the single use of the mythic element serves andthen center your thesis on renaissance, this function.

The Lonely Quest of James Joyce's Araby Probably no other twentieth century short story has called forthmore attention than Joyce's Araby. The Power Of Kite By Khaled Essay? Some universality of experiencemakes the story interesting to readers of all ages, for they respond in-stinctively to an experience that could have been their own. It is apart of the instinctual nature of man to bengal renaissance, long for what he feels is thelost spirituality of his world. In all ages man has believed that it ispossible to search for and find a talisman, which, if brought back, willreturn this lost spirituality.

The development of theme in Araby re-sembles the archetypal myth of the quest for a holy talisman. In Araby, Joyce works from a visionary mode of a thousand artisticcreation-a phrase used by psychiatrist Carl Jung to describe the,'visionary kind of literary creation that derives its material fromthe hinterland of man's mind-that suggests the abyss of time sepa-rating us from prehuman ages, or evokes a superhuman world of con-trasting light and renaissance darkness. It is a primordial experience, which sur-passes man's understanding and to which he is therefore in danger ofsuccumbing. 1 Assuredly this describes Joyce's handling of the mate-rial of Araby. The quest itself and its consequences surpass the un-derstanding of the young protagonist of the story. Catherines Husband Heights? He can only renaissance feelthat he undergoes the experience of the quest and find naturally is con-fused, and at the story's conclusion, when he fails, he is anguishedand angered.

His contrasting world of light and bengal darkness containsboth the pka from lost spirituality and the dream of renaissance restoring it. Cuba During The Cold War? Because ourown worlds contain these contrasts we also feel, even though theprimordial experience surpasses our understanding, too. It is true, as a writer reminds us, that no matter the work,Joyce always views the order and disorder of the world in terms ofthe Catholic faith in which he was reared. 2 In Araby, however, there is, in addition, an overlay of Eastern mysticism. Bengal? This diversity of background materials intensifies the universality of the experience. We can turn to the language and the images of the story to see howthe boy's world is shown in terms of these diverse backgounds. There is little that is ka light in the comer of Dublin that formsthe world of the story, little that retains its capability to evoke spiri-tuality. North Richmond Street is blind; the houses stare at one an-other with brown imperturbable faces. The time is winter, with itsshort days and its early dusk.

Only the boy and his laughing, shoutingcompanions glow; they are still too young to have succumbed tothe spiritual decay of the adult inhabitants of Dublin. But the boysmust play in dark muddy lanes, in dark dripping gardens, neardark odorous stables and ashpits. Joyce had said of Dubliners, the collection of bengal stories from which Araby comes, that he intendedto write a chapter in the moral history of my country and I choseDublin for the scene because that city seemed to me the words centre ofparalysis. 3 The images of the story show us that the spiritual envi-ronment of the boy is paralyzed; it is musty, dark. Everywhere in his dark surroundings the boy seeks the renaissance light.

He looks for it in the central apple tree-symbol of religiousenlightenment-in the husband heights dark garden behind his home. Bengal Renaissance? The gardenshould be like Eden, but the tree is overshadowed by One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the desolationof the garden, and thus has become the tree of spiritual death. Helooks for light in the room of his home where the former tenant, apriest, had died, but the bengal only objects left by the priest were books, yellowed and damp. Here, too, the quest has failed. By Khaled? No evidence ofspiritual life remains.

Decay and rust have taken over all the treasures the priest had laid up on earth for himself. Into this world of darkness appears a girl, Mangan's sister. Bengal? Be-cause of her the boy feels a surge of hope that now in her love he willfind light. Even though he has never spoken to her, except for a fewcasual words, her name is like a summons to all his foolish blood. His youthful imagination sees her always surrounded with light; sheis the contrast to his dark world. She becomes an image to him of allthat he seeks. That image accompanies him even in places the mosthostile to romance: the market and by Ken Essay the streets, among the drunkenmen and bargaining women, amid the curses of bengal labourers, the shrilllitanies of shop-boys. In this unlikely place occurs what Joyce calls an epiphany, which to Over Nest Kesey. Essay, him means a sudden spiritual manifesta-tion, when objects or moments of inconsequential vulgarity can betransfigured to something spiritual.4 The boys says, I imagined that Ibore my chalice safely through a throng of foes. Plainly he has feltthe summons to cherish the holy, the light, in this dark world ofthose who are hostile to the sacred. However, what he feels is beyond his understanding.

His lovefor the girl is part sexual desire, part sacred adoration. He is, he says, confused. He loses interest in his school and in everything about him; hethinks of renaissance nothing but the girl. He can see her dark house, herbrown-clad figure touched by lamp-light. He feels that he has foundone image of holiness in his world of lost spirituality. If he can gainthe girl, he feels, the light will be restored to can tell words, his dark existence. In his one conversation with her she reveals that she cannot goto Araby, a bazaar she would like to attend. Renaissance? She suggests that itwould be well for him to go. He speaks impulsively: If I go I willbring you something. His opportunity has come.

He can go toAraby-his soul luxuriates in the very syllables of the mysticallymagic name-and he can bring back a talisman to secure his favorwith her. The lost light of his world will be restored. Undoubtedly, as a writer suggests, Araby is Arabia, which is associated with thePhoenix, symbol of the renewal of cuba war life. 5. Over half the story is concerned with the delays and frustrationsin his plans for his quest, and with his final journey to bengal, the en-chanted place, where the talisman will be procured. One Flew The Cuckoo’s By Ken Kesey. Essay? Significantly, he must go to Araby alone. The train is deserted; when throngs of buy-ers try to press their way onto the train the porters move them back, saying this is a special train for the bazaar. All who go on a questfor the high and bengal renaissance the holy must go alone. Arriving, he finds the bazaar nearly empty. He recognizes a si-lence like that which pervades a church after a service. The churchis empty; it is not attended by the faithful.

Two men count money ona silver salver. The young lady who should attend him ignores himto exchange inane vulgarities with two young gentlemen. Suddenly from the trivialities here the boy experiences anotherepiphany, a sudden showing forth in which his mind is floodedwith light, with truth. He can see the parallel that exists between thegirl here and his girl; he can see his feeling for a picture can tell a thousand words her for renaissance what it is-physical attraction. Her brown-clad figure is a picture one with the drabworld of North Richmond Street. Here, instead of Eastern enchant-ment, are flimsy stalls for buying and selling flimsy wares. His grailhas turned out to be only bengal flimsy tea sets covered with artificial flow-ers. As the upper hall becomes completely dark, the boy realizes thathis quest has ended. Gazing upward, he sees the vanity of imagininghe can carry a chalice through a dark throng of foes. 1 Carl G. Jung, Modern Man in during war Search of a Soid. trans. W. Renaissance? S. USING POINT OF VIEW.

If we draw an analogy of a multistoried house withwindows on all sides, we can understand that a person's view of the worldcan vary greatly, depending on husband heights, which window he views it from; whether heis outside looking in; or whether, distantly, he looks at the house and the surrounding countryside simultaneously. Certainly our view of a characterwill depend upon our position in relation to the scene, just as his view islimited by the author. Henry James considered the renaissance positioning of both characters and narrator crucial to fiction, and in recent years (in fact since his detailed studiesof point of can tell a thousand words view) critics have considered the artist's use of point of view the central focus for interpretation. Look at the questions point of view provokes. Does the viewpoint allow for irony? Does it limit sympathy or does it evoke greater sympathy? Does it causeattitudes to bengal renaissance, be formed?

What are they? Does choice of this particular nar-rator or persona influence the reader's view of the ka situation? How? Does itcontrol imagery and symbolism? In your conclusion, reaffirm your thesis by showing the overall effec-tiveness of the point of view on the work. Did the work gain much or littlefrom its use? Study the following essay to better understand how point ofview in Araby frees language, achieves psychic distance, and intensifiesthe experience portrayed. THE IRONIC NARRATOR OF JAMES JOYCE'S ARABY Although James Joyce's story Araby is told from the first per-son viewpoint of its young protagonist, we do not receive the impres-sion that a boy tells the bengal story. Instead, the narrator seems to be a manmatured well beyond the experience of the ka story.

The mature man re-minisces about his youthful hopes, desires, and frustrations. Morethan if a boy's mind had reconstructed the events of the story for us,this particular way of bengal telling the story enables us to perceive clearlythe torment youth experiences when ideals, concerning both sacredand earthly love, are destroyed by a suddenly unclouded view of theactual world. Because the man, rather than the boy, recounts the experi-ence, an ironic view can be presented of the cuba during the cold institutions and personssurrounding the boy. This ironic view would be impossible for theimmature, emotionally involved mind of the boy himself. Only an adult looking back at bengal, the high hopes of foolish blood and its resul-tant destruction could account for factory system definition the ironic viewpoint. Throughoutthe story, however, the narrator consistently maintains a full sensitiv-ity to his youthful anguish. From first to last we sense the reality tohim of his earlier idealistic dream of beauty. The opening paragraph, setting the scene, prepares us for theview we receive of the conflict between the loveliness of the bengal ideal andthe drabness of the One Flew Over Nest Kesey. Essay actual. Descriptive words show the narrator's con-sciousness of the boy's response to beauty and the response of theneighborhood people, who are blind to beauty: North RichmondStreet is blind; its houses, inhabited by decent people, stare un-seeingly at one another-and all this is under a sky of renaissance ever-changingviolet, in a setting of gardens marred by the odours of ash-pitsand dark odorous stables.

The boy's own house, which had form-erly been inhabited by a priest, is placed in a garden like that ofEden. Catherines Husband In Wuthering Heights? It is a place of potential holiness, shown to bengal, us in the irony ofthe garden's barrenness and the priest's worldliness: the garden hasnow only a central apple tree and a few straggling bushes; thepriest had died and left behind him evidence of his preoccupationwith secular literature and with collecting money and furniture. Into this setting appears a figure representative of all that isideal, the girl. The narrator shows us in a subtly ironic manner thatin his youthful adoration of factory definition Mangan's sister she is, confusedly, theembodiment of all his boyish dreams of the beauty of physical desireand, at renaissance, the same time, the embodiment of The Power Hosseini examples his adoration of all that isholy. In his dark environment Mangan's sister stands out, a figure al-ways shown outlined by light, with the power to set aflame in him azeal to bengal, conquer the uncaring and system definition the unholy. Her image, constantlywith him, makes him feel as though he bears a holy chalice througha throng of foes-the Saturday evening throng of drunken men, bargaining women, cursing laborers, and all the others who have noconception of the bengal mystical beauty his young mind has created in thisworld of material ugliness.

He is alone as a boy, the husband in wuthering man narrator shows us, with his viewof the possible loveliness of the world. Even the aunt and uncle withwhom he lives are callous to his burning need to go to the bazaar, which looms in renaissance his imagination as a place of mystical Eastern en-chantment, to Hosseini Essay examples, purchase a gift worthy of his loved one. Looking back, the narrator can see that his uncle had been concerned with his daily, worldly tasks, his aunt with maintaining a decent observance ofthis day of bengal renaissance our Lord, although she does not want him to be disap-pointed in his wish to go to the bazaar. From the vantage point ofmaturity the narrator can realize that the aunt and the uncle perhaps once possessed an awareness of the romantic, an awareness that hassince been clouded by the drabness of North Richmond Street. Like Stephen Dedalus of Joyce's Portrait of the husband in wuthering Artist as aYoung Man, the boy, then, must seek for the high, the inviolate, byhimself. Bengal Renaissance? And, also like Stephen, he finds instead the the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken world. When heenters Araby the boy sees its resemblance to an emptied church, andthat is the irony so far as maturity can view it: Araby is not a holyplace because it is not attended by bengal renaissance, the faithful.

He has come alone on a deserted train; the bazaar, full of spu-rious wares, is tended by cuba during, uncaring people who leave him even morealone than he had been before; the young lady who should havewaited on him ignores him to joke with two young men. The younglady's inane remarks to the young men have a ring in the memory ofthe mature narrator reminiscent of his adored one's remarks. Both areconcerned with the material, the crass. The narrator can, with his backward look, supply us with twoapprehensions: one, the bengal fully remembered, and thus fully felt, anguishof a too sudden realization of the disparity between a youthful dreamof the mystic beauty of the can tell a thousand world and his actual world; and renaissance two, theirony implicit in a view that can see the find pka from ka dream itself as a vanity. In his brief but complex story, Araby, James Joyce concen-trates on character rather than on plot to reveal the ironies inherentin self-deception. On one level Araby is a story of initiation, of aboy's quest for the ideal.

The quest ends in failure but results in aninner awareness and a first step into manhood. On another level thestory consists of a grown man's remembered experience, for renaissance the storyis told in retrospect by a man who looks back to a particular momentof intense meaning and insight. As such, the boy's experience is notrestricted to youth's encounter with first love. Rather, it is a portrayalof a continuing problem all through life: the incompatibility of theideal, of the dream as one wishes it to be, with the bleakness of real-ity. This double focus-the boy who first experiences, and the manwho has not forgotten-provides for the dramatic rendering of astory of first love told by a narrator who, with his wider, adult vision, can employ the sophisticated use of irony and symbolic imagery nec-essary to reveal the story's meaning. The boy's character is One Flew the Cuckoo’s Kesey. indirectly suggested in the opening scenesof the renaissance story. He has grown up in the backwash of a dying city. Sym-bolic images show him to be an individual who is sensitive to catherines in wuthering heights, the factthat his city's vitality has ebbed and left a residue of empty piety, thefaintest echoes of romance, and only symbolic memories of an activeconcern for God and fellow men. Although the young boy cannot ap-prehend it intellectually, he feels that the street, the town, and Irelanditself have become ingrown, self-satisfied, and unimaginative. It is a. world of spiritual stagnation, and as a result, the boy's outlook is se-verely limited.

He is ignorant and therefore innocent. Lonely, imagin-ative, and isolated, he lacks the understanding necessary for evalua-tion and perspective. He is at first as blind as his world, but Joyceprepares us for bengal renaissance his eventual perceptive awakening by tempering hisblindness with an unconscious rejection of the spiritual stagnation ofhis world. The boy's manner of thought is also made clear in the openingscenes. Religion controls the lives of the inhabitants of North Richmond Street, but it is a dying religion and receives only lip service. The boy, however, entering the new experience of first love, finds hisvocabulary within the experiences of his religious training and the ro-mantic novels he has read. The result is an during idealistic and confused in-terpretation of love based on quasireligious terms and the imagery ofromance. This convergence of two great myths, the bengal renaissance Christian with itssymbols of hope and sacrifice and the Oriental or romantic with itsfragile symbols of heroism and husband heights escape, merge to form in his mind anillusory world of bengal mystical and ideal beauty. Heights? This convergence, whichcreates an epiphany for the boy as he accompanies his aunt throughthe market place, lets us experience with sudden illumination the tex-ture and content of his mind. We see the futility and stubbornness ofhis quest. But despite all the evidence of the dead house on a deadstreet in a dying city the boy determines to bear his chalice safelythrough a throng of foes. He is blindly interpreting the world in theimages of his dreams: shop boys selling pigs' cheeks cry out in shrilllitanies; Mangan's sister is bengal renaissance saintly; her name evokes in Runner, by Khaled Hosseini him strangeprayers and praises.

The boy is bengal renaissance extraordinarily lovesick, and find pka from ka fromhis innocent idealism and stubbornness, we realized that he cannotkeep the dream. He must wake to the demands of the world aroundhim and react. Thus the first half of the story foreshadows (as the manlater realizes) the boy's awakening and disillusionment. The account of the boy's futile quest emphasizes both his lonelyidealism and his ability to bengal renaissance, achieve the perspectives he now has. Thequest ends when he arrives at the bazaar and realizes with slow, tor-tured clarity that Araby is not at all what he imagined. It is tawdryand dark and thrives on the profit motive and the eternal lure itsname evokes in The Power of Kite Runner, Essay examples men. Renaissance? The boy realizes that he has placed all his loveand hope in a picture can tell a thousand words a world that does not exist except in his imagination.

Hefeels angry and betrayed and realizes his self-deception. He feels he isa creature driven and derided by vanity and the vanity is his own. The man, remembering this startling experience from bengal his boy-hood, recalls the moment he realized that living the dream was lost asa possibility. That sense of loss is intensified, for its dimension growsas we realize that the desire to, live the dream will continue throughadulthood. At no other point in the story is characterization as brilliant asat the end. Joyce draws his protagonist with strokes designed to let usrecognize in the creature driven and husband in wuthering derided by vanity both a boywho is initiated into knowledge through a loss of innocence and aman who fully realizes the incompatibility between the beautiful andinnocent world of the imagination and the very real world of renaissance fact.

InAraby, Joyce uses character to embody the of Kite Hosseini theme of his story.

In Yasuteru Urano’s experiment they proposed the heights, idea of bengal renaissance controlling the bioluminogenic substance aminoluciferin (AL) by using a moiety of a benzene which could transfer electrons to ka, excite the luminophore.

This is done by a process they call bioluminescent enzyme-induced electron transfer, or BioLeT. Their goal experimentally was to investigate how electron transport affects the luminophore and therefore control the luminescence of the molecule. This concept can be observed in figure 1. As molecules are excited chemically, an electron is transferred from the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO). Bengal Renaissance. When this happens in a fluorophore or luminophore, an electron from the respective group jumps up to the LUMO and en electron from the benzene moiety drops down to fill its spot, releasing energy in the form of light. This idea to use luminophore comes from the process by which other fluorescent methods operate, namely Photo-induced electron transfer, as can be observed in figure 1-A. Cuba War. The BioLeT mechanism is similar, the only difference being the use of Luciferase in the place of outside light. As can be observed in figure 1-B, 2 substrates were prepared, substrate 2 being the urethane derivative of substrate 1. They then reacted aminoluciferin with photinus pyralis and found that even though substrate 2 has a bulkier group on bengal the benzene moiety, substrate 2 showed a luminescence 70 times greater than substrate 1 even though substrate 1 was completely consumed. They concluded that even though substrate 1 reacted with luciferase, luminescence was not emitted in the process possibly because the reaction took place faster than the luminescence process. Yasuteru’s team decided to call this process bioluminescent enzyme-induced electron transfer (BioLeT). Yasuteru Urano’s team next had the task to find ka, establish the feasibility and bengal, actual existence of this phenomenon. Factory System Definition. This had to be accomplished in order for a reliable approach could be made to bengal, develop probes that act by the process of BioLeT instead of traditional fluorophores.

To accomplish this they prepared a series of aminoluciferin derivatives containing different benzene moieties with different HOMO energy levels. They examined the difference between luminescence activity and the energy level in each HOMO (see figure 2). Factory System. They found that the energy level of the HOMO on bengal each benzene moiety played a large role in the luminescent activity of each molecule. As the a picture can tell a thousand, energy level of the HOMO increased, luminescent activity decreased, some of which were nearly non-luminescent at energy levels -5eV and bengal renaissance, above. This procedure validated the existence of BioLeT. In order to prove that the BioLeT principle is during the cold useful for designing bioluminescent probes, Dr. Urano and his team developed their own probe using BioLeT luminescence as the bengal, mechanism in their molecule. Catherines Husband. They decided to bengal renaissance, use NO as their target molecule because diaminobenzene groups react with NO in a way that creates a substantial change in HOMO energy levels. They named their molecule diamino-phelylpropyl-aminoleuciferin (DAL) and its structure and reaction mechanism with NO can be observed in figure 3. They measured the the cold, HOMO energy levels of both DAL and its reaction product, DAL-T, to be -4.68eV and -6.22eV respectively. They predicted that the product would be sufficiently different in the HOMO energy level to produce a sufficiently different intensity in luminescence.

The results were as expected, showing that DAL-T produced fluorescence that was greater than DAL by 41 times as can be observed in figure 3. These results support the idea that the excited state regulated by BioLeT is occurring in bengal, DAL and DAL-T and that luminescence by DAL is quenched by the luminophore, again supporting the operation of BioLeT. Dr. Urano later experimented with the detection of NO in vitro using DAL which found a great increase of luminescence when addition of a solution containing NO or NOC7 was added, as can again be observed in figure 3-B. They found that DAL was converted to DAL-T as the product, as expected. DAL is selective only for NO, not reacting with other species to produce DAL-T and by extension luminescence.

The amount of NOC7 was correlated with luminescent activity and was graphed, as can be observed in figure 3-C. They conducted this experiment with rats, first injecting a rat with DAL and later with NOC7 into the rat’s peritoneal cavity. Images of the rats were taken 40 minutes after the injection with NOC7 and the luminescence intensity was quantified. The results of this experiment can be seen in figure 4. In these rats, DAL was distributed throughout the entire body, and thus could effectively monitor NO levels throughout the whole body. This experiment illustrates the application of DAL in ka, vivo, and further illustrates the possibility of creating bioluminescent probes using the BioLeT process. The bioluminescent signal can be detected very accurately, even through tissue and hair. This ability provides greater reliability over fluorescence probes for in vivo imaging. In this article, Dr.

Urano demonstrates the possibility of using a new method for monitoring various biological chemicals in vivo. Just as fluorescent probes have been designed using their PeT properties to gather information in vivo, bioluminescent probes can be engineered using their BioLeT properties to do the same in an even more accurate and sensitive manner. The Work of Yasuteru Urano. Urano’s area of research centers heavily in bengal, biochemical science, especially in pharmacology, biomolecular chemistry and applied chemistry. He has largely spent his academic and pka from ka, professional life at the University of Tokyo where he conducted his undergraduate and graduate studies. He obtained his Ph.D. there in 1995 in bengal, the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Studies. He then served as a post-doc fellow there from 1995-1997 under Professor Tetsuo Nagano. He then served as Assistant Professor from 1997-2005 and then Associate Professor from 2005-2009 in The Power of Kite Essay examples, the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Studies. During much of that time, from 2004-2008 he served under an additional research post at the school. He now serves as a Professor in the Graduate School of Medicine and also in the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Tokyo. One of Dr.

Urano’s earliest articles was published in 1996, soon after his undergraduate studies were finished. Renaissance. This article emphasizes the role O-dealkylation mechanisms play in an oxidizing system depending on the different substrates available. They found that the oxidation determinant was if the substrate had a phenolic hydroxyl group at the ortho- or para- position relative to the alkoxy group in cytochrome P 450-dependent monooxygenases.2 Dr. Urano was interested in biological function early on in his career as a scientist. Dr. Urano published another article in ka, 1998 along with several other authors from the renaissance, University of Tokyo that was of significance3. It currently has 140 citations. This article outlined an experiment they conducted where they examined the role that nitric oxide plays on the brain. In this experiment they used a fluorescent indicator to directly detect the presence of nitric oxide in samples of rat brain.

The samples were from both acute cases and normal. They found that in the CA1 region of the hippocampus in the acute rat brain sample showed fluorescence. This was later confirmed by cell culture from the hippocampus. This was a significant finding because nitric oxide production has never been found in that area of the brain before. This experiment also proved the usefulness of using fluorescence in a thousand words, biological assays because of renaissance its sensitivity and real-time ability to provide feedback. Another article published in the year 1999 improved upon a picture can tell the significance of the previously mentioned one, with 264 citations4. This article continues on the trend that Dr. Urano has developed in bengal, fluorescence over the years. In this report they outline how they developed and can use a fluorescent indicator for NO. This indicator is called diaminofluoresceins (DAF5).

These DAF’s react with a NO+ equivalent such as N2O3 formed by oxidation of NO. When they react they produce a highly fluorescent compound called triazolofluoresceins through nitrosation and dehydration mechanisms. Of Kite Essay Examples. If NO is not present these DAF’s will not react, making them useful for bengal, detection of NO produced by cells in vivo. A Picture Can Tell Words. One issue they ran into was the bengal renaissance, problem of pH, fluorescent ability is sensitive to changes in pH and the intensity will drop if the pH fluctuates too much. The Cold War. One additional benefit of renaissance this technique, however, is that it does not interfere with signal transduction inside a cell. In an article published in 2000, Dr. Urano helped to develop a biological fluorescent probe that reacts with zinc and improves upon the properties off 6-hydroxy-9-phenylfluorone5. Find. Zinc plays an bengal important role in the body. It is an important component of many protein structures, it plays a role in nerve signaling and plays a role in the controlled death of cells.

Even though it is known that zinc plays an important role in the cell, not much is known about the regulation of zinc in The Power of Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini Essay, a cell, as opposed to calcium, sodium or potassium where much is known. Bengal Renaissance. Because of these findings, Dr. Yasuteru and others sought to develop a way to monitor zinc levels in ka, the body in order to observe and learn more about this important element of cellular function. Bengal Renaissance. They also made improvements on their previously formed fluorescent sensor molecules in order to improve results. They found that the catherines heights, previous molecules had a slow complex formation rate as well as a small yield, so they decided to utilize fluorescein’s high-yield and created molecules they called ZnAF-1 and renaissance, ZnAF-2. The structure of ZnAF-1 and ZnAF-2 can be observed in figure 5. They found that when not in the presence of Zn2+ there was little to no fluorescent activity, but when Zn2+ was introduced the fluorescent activity increased by Over the Cuckoo’s by Ken Kesey. 17-fold. The increase in fluorescent activity can be observed in figure 6. In 2001 Dr.

Urano and others conducted an in-depth study on fluorescein and bengal renaissance, its chemical properties6. They concluded that the One Flew the Cuckoo’s Kesey. Essay, fluorescent properties of fluorescein come from the benzoic acid moiety to the xanthene ring and are controlled by a photoinduced electron transfer process. They measured the threshold to be around -8.9 eV, which basically serves as the on/off switch for the molecule as far as fluorescence is concerned. Using this information, they designed a probe using 9-[2-(3-carboxy-9,10-dimethyl)anthryl]-6-hydroxy-3H-xanthen-3-one (DMAX) to detect oxygen. Renaissance. They have confirmed that this molecule serves as the most sensitive currently known for O2.

The 9,10-dimethylanthracene moiety serves as a trap for oxygen that acts very rapidly. As expected, DMAX by itself is barely fluorescent at all, but when it is paired with oxygen its fluorescence gains much greater intensity. DMAX could possibly be a great fluorescent probe for definition, oxygen in biological systems. The mechanism through which fluorescein works is shown in figure 7. The chemical structure of fluorescein can be observed in figure 8. In 2001 Dr. Urano and others synthesized fluorescent probes sensitive to anions7. At the time the only anion probes that were known only functioned in bengal renaissance, organic solvents. In order to be able to have an application in a biological setting, the anion probe would have to function under biological conditions including functionality in water at a neutral pH. In this report they introduce a fluorescent probe that is One Flew Nest Essay sensitive to anions and functions under biological conditions. The sensor molecule they designed is called 1-Cd111 with the fluorescent portion being made up of 7-amino-4-trifluoromethylcoumarin. They found that ATP and renaissance, ADP showed strong signals when they tested biological anions, but cAMP produced little response.

The mechanism for this reaction can be observed in figure 9. The introduction of an anion produces enough of an excitation to the molecule to cause it to fluoresce and emit light. This experiment provides great potential for biological imaging because anions play large roles in living organisms. Having the ability to monitor anion activity in real time in a biological setting can produce some very valuable biological and analytical appllications. In 2004 Dr. Urano and others experimented more with NO8. A Picture. This article currently has over 360 citing references. NO is an bengal renaissance important messenger molecule both inside and outside of cells. Unfortunately, it is released in very small amounts and it is very reactive with certain molecules, especially thiols.

These facts have made it difficult to measure NO accurately in by Ken Kesey. Essay, vivo with the tools currently available today. Even fluorescein moieties have been lacking enough sensitivity to renaissance, actively measure NO. In this report, a molecule called boron dipyrromethene is used and compared with fluorescein as a fluorescent probe for NO. The molecule they developed based off of boron dipyrromethene is called DAMBO-PH, short for 8-(3,4-diaminophenyl)-2,6-bis(2-carboxyethyl)-4,4-difluoro-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene, which they found to definition, be a highly sensitive probe for NO. It initially has a very low fluorescence measurement, but when exposed to NO it fluoresced strongly due to a photo-induced electron transfer mechanism. The development of bengal this molecule was significant because they had to do some fine tuning of the molecule in The Power Runner, by Khaled Hosseini Essay, order for it to function well independent of pH and to avoid probe stacking. It was found that DAMBO was more specific to react only with NO and bengal, had higher reactivity at the same time. Dr. Urano conducted even more research regarding NO. One notable article of husband heights his from November 2004 was again about improving upon the imaging techniques used to bengal, monitor NO activity. Hosseini. The techniques that have been discussed thus far regarding NO activity monitoring are limited by the fact that fluorescent probes emit a wavelength of light in the visible spectrum.

This area of wavelengths is bengal absorbed readily by body tissues and prevents observation in deeper tissues because the husband, light is absorbed too quickly by tissue. Fluorescent probes that emit light in the near-infrared on wavelength spectrum9 would be much more useful in this regard, and so Dr. Bengal. Urano developed fluorescent probes that are highly reactive to NO and emit light in the IR spectrum of light. He created the probes with two parts. The first is tricarbocyanine, an a picture can tell a thousand words IR emitting fluorophore, and renaissance, o-phenylenediamine as the NO reactive portion. They called the chemical group diaminocyanines (DAC’s) which are classified into two types: DAC-P’s which are DAC’s with two propyl groups attached to allow the DAC through a cell membrane easily and DAC-S’s with sulfonate groups to The Power of Kite Essay examples, make them highly soluble in bengal renaissance, water. The chemical scheme of these molecules is a thousand words shown in figure 10. The absorbance spectra and emittance spectra of DAC-S is shown in figure 11 with the presence of bengal varying amounts of NO. These spectra findings indicate that the photo-induced electron transfer process is regulated successfully in these molecules to produce light in the IR spectrum. This finding is significant because at that time only one other probe was reported to produce IR wavelengths through regulation by photo-induced electron transfer. The ability of DAC to produce IR wavelengths has been observed to produce clearer results because of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken less interference from light absorbance in surrounding tissue.

Figure 12 shows the results of administration of NOC13 in bengal, the presence of the Cuckoo’s Kesey. Essay DAC-P in a rat kidney. Renaissance. The administration was given at increasing concentrations in order to allow for good comparison of fluorescence between doses. A Picture A Thousand Words. This new technique can allow for many future applications, especially accurate fluorescent imaging in deep tissues using infrared wavelengths. More research on fluorescein and developments on creating finely tunable fluorescent probes10 was shown in an article published in October 2004 by Dr. Bengal. Urano. In this article he shows how he isn’t afraid to think outside the pka from ka, box and challenge other people’s ideas.

Up until this point it was basically understood that the carboxyl group of fluorescein was indispensable to the function of the renaissance, molecule, so nobody really messed with it. This was a mistake, however, because fluorescent probes have to be modified to fit different substrates in order to observe specific chemical activities in the body. Being able to modify the fluorescein molecule to fit your need was essential in order to factory, achieve the desired goal. This is the main reason fluorescein was limited, because of the lack of design strategies to fit the bengal, variety of needs. In this article, Dr. Urano breaks through the can tell a thousand words, traditional form of fluorescein to achieve a new approach to bengal, fluorescein probes based on a photochemical basis. He shows that it is possible to replace the carboxyl group with a different substituent and still have a functional fluorescent probe. He illustrates the feasibility of this idea by using this method to create a probe that is pka from ka sensitive to bengal, beta-galactosidase which is the most widely used reporter enzyme. Husband In Wuthering Heights. As can be observed in renaissance, figure 13, he first replaced the carboxyl group with a methyl group and fluorescence was still achieved. One Flew Nest By Ken. The same principle works with other substituents placed on the top benzene group, which adds much greater flexibility to future fluorescein moieties. In an article published in bengal, December of 200611 Dr.

Urano discusses further the greater options that become available when the carboxyl group is replaced on the benzene moiety of fluorescene. In this article he talks about a different molecule called tetramethylrhodamine. This molecule has good potential for use as a fluorescent probe because of system its resistance to pH, its excellent photochemical properties and longer excitation time and renaissance, wavelengths. Thus far it has been used very little, perhaps because of difficulty in modifying it to factory, a useful probe. Here he applies the bengal, same principle he used before and pka from, synthesized a new derivative called hydroxymethyltetramethylrhodamine (HMTMR). They found that HMTMR displayed a large amount of absorbance and renaissance, fluorescence in protic solvents but little in aprotic or basic solvents. Factory. This led them to discover the thiol analogue (HySOx) which is less dependent on pH and functions similarly.

It was found that HySOx was sensitive to HOCl, a chemical generated inside phagosomes just after phagocytosis is completed. Bengal. They then applied HySOx to help visualize phagocytosis of pathogens. As can be observed in can tell words, figure 14, the activation of these phagosomes could be observed visually as the bengal renaissance, HOCl contained in the phagosomes reacts with HySOx and causes excitation and luminescence. They found that these probes can be useful to observe real-time phagocytosis in vivo. As was mentioned earlier, fluorescent dyes that can produce wavelengths near-infrared frequency are desirable because of their attributes of husband in wuthering heights being less absorbed by surrounding tissues and low background autofluorescence. These properties make imaging much clearer and renaissance, more accurate. Of Kite Runner, By Khaled Hosseini Examples. These dyes have been utilized to bengal renaissance, diagnose various different diseases, such as arteriosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and cancer.

The problem that is being faced with these probes is that most of them don’t function well in aqueous media because the molecules stack on each other and prevent efficient emission of luminescence. In 2012 Dr. Urano reported on the development of fluorescent dyes that are excitable in near-infrared wavelengths based on the rhodamine scaffold that was discovered in the previous mentioned experiment12. They used a strategy of lengthening the rhodamine ring to adjust the wavelength emitted by the molecule when it became excited and were able to create several different rhodamine-based molecules that emitted near-infrared wavelengths, were efficient in during war, aqueous media, and had good photostability. They then took one of the molecules they developed named SiR-700 and labeled it with an antibody to a glycoprotein known to be specific for malignant gliomas called tanascin-C (TN-C). They then injected the bengal, compound into a mouse prepared with human malignant meningioma cells.

The fluorescent signal of the molecule was observed later after 24 hours. The fluorescent imaging can be observed in figure 15. The signal amazingly remained observable for The Power of Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini Essay examples, 10 days. This displays the huge developments he has made in creating probes that are resistant to photobleaching and renaissance, can last for a long time in vivo and still display an accurate image. Dr. In Wuthering Heights. Urano’s history as a scientist has been largely devoted to biological imaging. His background in biochemistry, pharmacology and applied chemistry has given him an edge in using chemical knowledge to come up with new ideas to bengal, improve the catherines husband in wuthering heights, way diseases are observed and accurately diagnosed. With each passing year he has improved upon his previous studies and bengal renaissance, experiments to produce greater results that have very useful applications, especially in the field of medicine. Other studies done in this field. Intra-cellular processes are very important to be able to understand, especially when it comes to genes that get turned on that result in disease, such as cancer, autoimmunity and cuba during, chronic inflammatory diseases.

Dr.’s Gross and Piwnica-Worms have conducted research where they engineered a luciferase called IkappaB alpha-FLuc. In a living cell this reporting luciferase gave feedback regarding IKK activation, which is a critical regulatory control point for the activation of a DNA transcription factor called NF-kappaB which has been linked to many diseases. This IkappaB alpha-FLuc reporter now provides continuous feedback of IKK activity in vivo and bengal, provides a reliable way to monitor NF-kappaB signaling and potential signs of disease. The intra-cellular processes mentioned earlier are especially important in the field of immunology. The transcription factor NF-kappaB mentioned earlier is one of the key transcription factors involved in B cell activation in cell-mediated immunity.

Clarification of these intracellular events is pka from very important in order for bengal renaissance, us to understand how immune reactions are stimulated, controlled and halted. As Negrin and Contag mention in their article, the definition, pathophysiology regarding grafts is a subject that is renaissance currently being researched. Bioluminescence imaging has great potential to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s by Ken Kesey., be a reliable modality for observing cell trafficking and gaining greater understanding of biological systems relating to immunity and bengal, grafts. Further manipulation of the luminescent protein luciferase has yielded wider possibilities of applications in find pka from ka, intracellular gene analysis. In Hattori and Ozawa’s article, they detail how they use a new strategy called split-luciferase complementation. Renaissance. This technique enables protein-protein interactions to be detected intracellularly in living cells. This technique has a wide variety of possible applications, such as phosphorylation monitoring, G-protein-coupled receptor screening, and even Ph monitoring in addition to observing protein-protein interactions. Dragulescu-Andrasi et. al. further emphasize the importance of catherines husband being able to identify and understand various interactions between proteins in bengal renaissance, the cell. They describe a system using bioluminescence resonance energy transfer that makes it possible to identify protein-protein interactions not only in culture, but in deep tissue in a living organism. They outline the potential usages of this system to investigate protein-protein interactions in a picture, the context of bengal renaissance target validation and drug screening in a patient.

The potential usage of a picture can tell a thousand words this technique is wonderful, especially because of its non-invasive requirements. Wehrman et. Renaissance. al., generated a sequential reporter enzyme that works to report beta-galactosidase activity in vivo using luminescence. This was accomplished using a caged D-luciferin-galactoside conjugate which must react with beta-galactosidase before the luciferin can be released to catherines, create luminescence. Bengal. They state that one benefit of this method, besides the non-invasiveness that comes with using bioluminescence, is the ability for the probe to remain fully active even when it is outside of the catherines husband heights, cell since beta-galactosidase is able function without the aid of intracellular enzymes. Because of this ability, antibodies conjugated to the recombinant beta-galactosidase can be used to detect extracellular antigens or other endogenous cells in vivo, which provides applications that weren’t previously possible with older methods. In an experiment conducted by Hickson et. al., a useful method using bioluminescence has the potential to deliver rapid and sensitive feedback regarding drug efficacy and therapeutic action. Bengal Renaissance. Using a modified version of luciferin called Z-DEVD-aminoluciferin, they measured the amount of luminescence delivered after injecting this modified luciferin into cancerous animals prior to treatment with docetaxel.

They also had a control group who were not injected with docetaxel. Z-DEVD-aminoluciferin is cleaved by caspase-3, which is released in apoptotic cells, which in turn releases the luciferin and system definition, results in luminescence. Light was detected in significantly greater amounts in renaissance, the group that was treated with docetaxel. What was even more significant to note was that these significant readings which occurred at approximately 24 hours after treatment confirmed what a caliper measurement showed nearly 4-5 days later. A Picture A Thousand Words. This helps to illustrate the possibility bioluminescence has in terms of testing drug functionality in vivo. Bengal. Knowledge of how a drug is by Khaled Hosseini Essay working can be obtained many days before older methods could measure. Van de Bittner et. Bengal Renaissance. al. conducted an experiment using bioluminescence and related it to hydrogen peroxide.

It is known that hydrogen peroxide is generated by living organisms to kill invading pathogens and to maintain immunity. The specifics on hydrogen peroxide’s general effects on aging and find ka, health are largely unknown largely attributed to the difficulties of being able to study it in vivo. In their experiment they report on bengal their use Peroxy Caged Luciferin-1 which serves as a bioluminescent probe that selectively reacts with hydrogen peroxide, causes the release of catherines in wuthering heights luciferin and consequently creates luminescence. Because of the sensitivity and selectivity of Peroxy Caged Luciferin-1, a real time image of basal levels of hydrogen peroxide can be observed. Renaissance. The effects of hydrogen peroxide, in addition to One Flew Over Kesey. Essay, all kinds of other chemicals, on aging, disease and health can now be observed where previously it was impossible.
