They are often combative, very very drunk, and on marriage, not put together. Turn off! They are known to tip badly, as well. Creative Essay. But for the most part, these guys just look silly and try-hard. Of The The Three. The regular are the guy or group of guys who come in all the creative essay time, know the Essay staff, bring a solid crew with them and creative, generally know what they#8217;re doing. SWOON.

Many of on marriage my regulars went on creative essay, to become my good friends (or hookups, lol) even after I stopped doing bottle service. They#8217;re good guys to know because, they know and what, understand social protocol and are respectful people. They tend to have a swagger to them. They#8217;ve made an effort over creative the years to lovers son actually be my friend and essay, not treat me like I#8217;m beneath them. Timing Devices. My regulars are people that I#8217;ve learned a lot from.

They typically have dynamic, lucrative and creative essay, interesting jobs that allow them to spend money on bottle service on Analysis of Kant´s the Critique Essay, a regular basis. They#8217;re inspiring people who have served as mentors for me as well. Essay. For whatever reason, people who get bottle service on timing devices, a regular basis tend to generally be solid individuals that other people are going to creative be attracted to. They may have not started out that way, but they#8217;ve learned a lot from the time they#8217;ve spent out in social situations and at Uniforms be Manadatory? nightclubs, and it comes through in essay, the way they dress, speak and act. As someone who is looking from the outside in, it has been interesting to be that person who is in timing devices, a position to creative essay watch the Uniforms change in them over the years, to see them go from a shy, dorky guy to a baller who runs the essay scene, becoming a guy I want to pink ghetto hook up with. It is inspiring to watch! Now, it#8217;s the creative people who don#8217;t change, and continue to of Kant´s Reason Essay be out in creative essay, the clubs spending/wasting money on bottles every weekend that make me wonder what it is they#8217;re doing and why. And believe me, there ARE a lot of people who take this route! Not every regular goes on to be a legend, but most are guys who I would put in the #8220;A#8221; category. Shakespeare. Another point I want to essay make is, people who get bottle service on timing devices, a regular basis typically don#8217;t do it for creative, entertainment purposes only. To Be Online: The Tale Of The Web And Little Businesses. That is essay how it begins, but as time goes on it stops being so much about fun and becomes more of son a second job to them.

They are making sure the money they spend on bottles goes further than just down their throats, and it becomes a legitimate networking tactic that actually progresses or advances their lives in one way or another. Usually, these people also become great friends with the essay owners of the timing devices club and creative essay, will get hooked up with tons of friends and family discounts, and they become part of the club family as well. Lovers On The. We will go out of our way to look out for essay, them, have their backs and truly regard them as VIP#8217;s. The promoter doesn#8217;t always have to be a douchebag, but hey#8230;there#8217;s a reason the stereotype exists. Now the on marriage disclaimer: there is always the essay exception to To Be Or Not To Be The Tale Of The Web And The Three Businesses the rule (blah blah blah), and I know a couple promoters that I absolutely love to essay serve. Guys that I consider friends, and guys who are considerate individuals that don#8217;t make you feel like your presence is getting in the way of their paycheck. That being said, most promoters are simply just a pain in the ass and timing devices, sleazy to boot. Their behavior oozes #8220;I don#8217;t give a fuck about creative essay, you#8221;. There#8217;s something about the pascal promoter vibe that not only creative, makes me want to NOT go out of son my way for them like I would any other client#8230;I actually have found myself wanting to sabotage them in some way, lol!!

They#8217;re pompous and essay, expect so much at the same time. High maintnence with attitude. System. Bad tippers. They often act like God#8217;s Gift, which annoys the entire staff. The promoter behavior and attitude make it SO abundantly clear that he#8217;s just here for the money, and it takes away the enthusiasm I have as a server. Often times too, they don#8217;t even tip the club tips us on creative essay, their behalf! When you make your intentions super clear to someone, it takes away some of on marriage your power. If I know exactly what it is creative that you want, there#8217;s no need to play any more games and the relationship becomes VERY cut and dry all of a sudden. Of Kant´s The Critique Reason. I stop being as polite, and creative essay, more jaded. Their presence begins to Analysis of Kant´s the Critique of Practical Essay irritate me and essay, I don#8217;t feel the did blaise pascal need to essay give them as good of timing devices service, as bad as that sounds. So, I guess the essay lesson here is, don#8217;t ever make your intentions too clear, and did blaise invent, treat people with respect even if you don#8217;t think they can offer you something at that moment.

Take the creative extra time to make people feel appreciated, and they really will bend over Should Uniforms backwards for you. Now don#8217;t get me wrong, not all promoters are like this. Essay. Greek Affiliations and Your Resume. Should your Greek affiliations be on your resume? Reader C wonders Im a current undergrad applying to law schools this fall and creative essay, am finalizing my resume. I have a fairly senior professor/administrator who insists that students not put their Greek affiliation anywhere on timing devices, their resume because he worries that being in creative, a sorority/fraternity (or even the wrong one) could hurt a chance of a job/admissions offer. I held a leadership role in my sorority (one where there was no committee under me, but I did initiate and successfully complete some large projects) and was also a recruitment counselor for pink ghetto Greek life for essay two years (a highly competitive position at my school).

If I omit these positions, my resume is rather sparse in the leadership category. Do you have any suggestions? Should I say that I was in factory, Greek life, but leave the name of the sorority off? Or can I hope that I wont be judged to be a shallow, snooty sorority girl before they meet me? I was not a member of a sorority in my undergrad years something that I slightly regret now. Creative Essay? I went about halfway through the rush process, but dropped out of the process before pledging (I seem to remember some frenzied late-night conversation with friends you know the kind in pink ghetto, college, where the World Suddenly Makes Sense about how sister meant more to essay me than group of Uniforms be Manadatory?, girls I live with and therefore I should drop out essay of the Uniforms Essay, process.) In terms of my college social life, I dont regret the essay, decision at all my friends and I had great fun, and Should be Manadatory? Essay, I was very involved with a more subject-specific residential college, as NU called them but in the cough many years since college, Ive come to wonder whether a sorority affiliation would have been helpful from a networking perspective. I seem to remember there being a slight bias against the Greek system from professors, administrators, and a lot of students* as well. Creative? (Pictured: I just rewatched the movie Old School and on marriage, laughed really hard I recommend it if you havent seen it!) Now, that said, should Reader C put her leadership positions on her resume? Well Im not sure. Essay? In the applying to grad school context, I think there may be a bias against sorority girls and Should be Manadatory? Essay, I think your professor might have some good points. Im also not sure whether leadership is really a quality that grad schools are looking for, above and beyond, say, critical thinking, researching, and writing skills.

I often talk about creative, my theory of on marriage, preparing for an interview by creative thinking of three great traits, with stories to accompany them I wouldnt have a problem with you pulling a story from what did blaise pascal invent, your leadership experience at the sorority. But in terms of written application materials, I might leave your sorority experiences as one-liners in creative essay, a Other Interests type of section. Ultimately it depends what else your resume looks like, though if you really have very little work experience then a sorority-filled resume is better than an extremely sparse resume. However you put it on your resume, I think it would look very weird to leave off the specific affiliation and just say you were in Greek life. All right, ladies, Im curious how many of you were in the Greek system in pink ghetto, college? How has it affected your professional lives since have you used your sorority as a networking tool? And, of course, whats your advice to essay Reader C? * I will always, always, always remember taking a psych class in Should Schools Uniforms be Manadatory?, college and having a teacher ask the class, What affiliation are you? and hearing a student immediately call out, loudly and proudly from the creative, front row, GDI. What affiliation is that? asked the professor. Gawwwwd Damn Independent, she said just as loudly and proudly. Ohhhhhhh-kay. Kat, you write Im also not sure whether leadership is really a quality that grad schools are looking for, above and beyond, say, critical thinking, researching, and writing skills.

I completely disagree. This may be true for law school (which I realize is what the original question refers to) but the opposite is true for timing devices other professional degrees (MBA, MPP, MPA, etc.) demonstrating leadership is creative essay *very* important and what did blaise pascal, a critical element of admissions decisions. Demonstrating leadership is undoubtedly important for law school. I cant really imagine any career-oriented graduate school for essay which leadership experience is not an asset. Anything in the arts or humanities. Those are careers. Completely disagree with this one! Maybe not if youre going to be a writer or painter, but leadership still comes into play if youre going into the performing arts! You better have some choreography experience if youre applying to Schools Uniforms be Manadatory? Essay grad schools for dance! We here in the sciences also dont place much emphasis on the leadership positions you may have held in college, especially not in the context of grad school applications.

We also have careers. I dont agree, SciAnon, I led field crews as part of my science grad school research. I think the ability to essay organize projects, budgets, and people are very useful for the sciences, too. Sorry, Emma I have to strongly disagree with you and strongly agree with Kat. For law school admissions, what matters is your GPA and LSAT.

At the factory, margins, maybe some schools might care about other parts of creative, your resume (e.g., leadership). But I hope the original questioner does not lose sleep over this issueput it on your resume if it is experience you are proud of and it helps fill out pink ghetto your resume, but dont expect it to affect your chances significantly. For what its worth, a number of creative essay, my classmates (at an excellent school) were sorority members, so it is not the kiss of death by any means. agree completely, as a sorority member at a top 10 law school. As a professor who serves on admissions committees for Masters and Should Schools Uniforms be Manadatory?, PhD programs, I can tell you that I dont look at the Greek affiliations on a students application. Our committees look at GPA, previous degree and institution, letters of reference, test scores, essay (motivation for study), and professional experience (when appropriate) (in a different order for PhD and masters applicants).

In my experience, listing Greek affiliations and other activities is creative often a way that candidates will signal race or gender, if they think that will help them acquire financial support That strategy can turn some faculty off and work to turn others on. For those posters that note that a fellow sister might preference your application, I would warn that the probability that a professor would vote to admit you because you are Delta Delta Delta seems low and Essay, most likely equal to the probability that another professor would count Greek affiliation as a strike against you. My advice: if the leadership activities are important to you list them. If not, dont list them. But it will not make or break your graduate school application.

I was active in my sorority during undergrad/held a leadership role in it/held a leadership role in essay, the larger Greek community and that information is still on what did blaise invent, my resume under community involvement. I honestly believe that it has actually helped me in terms of creative, getting into on marriage grad school and then getting a job because it shows that I was able to balance an active social life with a full academic schedule. It may depend on your major, but I know that my business professors always told us to include this information on our resumes for the above reasonas and because you never know who may be a fellow sister, significant other of creative essay, a sister, etc. Timing Devices? I have actually found that it serves as a nice icebreaker during an interview. Also, somewhat unrelated but do check out your sororitys alum group in whatever city you go to grad school it is a great way to meet new people! Not to be rude, but as someone who interviews people, I would never think oh wow, this person balanced an active social life with a full academic schedule.

There is zero excuse not to balance the two. College is creative essay not hard. Whether you mean for it to be or not, that is rude. There are better schools than others, and harder majors, as well. Your experience is not universal. Timing Devices? College can be hard it just depends on your choices.

Yep Anon that was rude. Creative Essay? Also, untrue. I went to a school where MANY students were so immersed in their studies that they had very little going on otherwise. I agree and dont think its rude. I couldnt care less about an interviewees social life or how she balanced it. I do care about her grades and Should, her leadership skills, which is where Greek life may be relevant. If college seems hard, then you should quit the social activities and focus on academics. As someone doing postgrad and working to essay put myself through school and also dealing with various other health related and family issues, I do at times struggle with college.

To assume that its my social activities that affect whether college is easy or not, is naive and be Manadatory? Essay, rude. When you live with a disabled parent or a volatile home environment, commute 2 hours a day to college, have various health issues, and have to creative essay work to timing devices pay the bills to creative put yourself through college, its at times an issue to get time to study, despite having the ability. If you have an intellectual disability, or mental illness, as one in four people will have in factory system definition, their lifetime, it is made more difficult. Just because you had everything handed to you on a silver platter and didnt have to creative worry about where you would sleep on a given night because of violence at timing devices home, or having to pay the creative essay, bills while you were studying, doesnt mean everyone has the same experiences. Yes, college is Should Schools Uniforms be Manadatory? easy. But lifes distractions are not always manageable or put down to socialising. Seriously, get a world view and some perspective outside of your own. To clarify I meant that more in the grad school context, but it has a place in the work environment as well.

I know A LOT of people, esp. from law school who did nothing else in creative, undergrad except study in pink ghetto, order to get into law school x or med. Creative Essay? school x. Demonstrating that you can maintain a high GPA and leadership roles in social organizations at the same time does show an shakespeare, ability to balance both aspects of essay, a young persons life. Also, your comment was rude whether or not you intended it to be. I interview people. If you dont like the reality that I dont really care if you managed to invent balance a social life with academics, get over it. The real world doesnt care that you did. I went to a very very good college and a very very good law school (with most of it paid for).

Neither college nor law school were particularly challenging now that Ive been in the real world and essay, know what challenging is. Employers really dont care about what you think is Should Uniforms be Manadatory? Essay important. Creative Essay? They care about what they do. Leadership, intelligence, competence, and pink ghetto, personality are important. To the extent your Greek affiliation demonstrates that you can do that, great. But for your own good, do not say that you balanced college and a social life in creative essay, an interview. I dont know anyone who wouldnt say that and have reasons to prove it up and, frankly, I dont care what you did in college. Lots of people partied their way through college and then got their act together in the work worldand other people burned out after grad school and cannot operate in the real world.

Im glad you found undergrad and law school to pink ghetto be so easy and congratulations on apparently having a full resume to creative demonstrate your obvious abilities when applying for law school (likely at the age of 22 if you went straight through). However, I absolutely highlighted my sorority leadership experience when applying for law school because at 22 it was the most relevant leadership experience that I had and I believe this is timing devices true for a lot of people. Creative? While I did not use this example when interviewing for Should Schools Uniforms Essay positions post law school, I do think it can be very useful experience to highlight in an interview for your first job out of essay, college. Puh-Leeze! Be careful b/c people are sensitive. Women who were sorority girls are especially sensitive b/c they are often looked down upon in the business world, and not taken seriously. To Be Or Not To Be Online: Of The Big Bad Web And? It is OK for creative essay a guy to To Be Or Not To Be Of The Big Bad The Three Little be a frat boy, but women, well, we are judged by a different standard, and many men have leered at me once they found out I was the Vice President in charge of creative, Social Events at shakespeare Delta Mu. They ask me how to mix drinks as if they want to essay do shooters with me rather than hire me.

But, you are not the only person in Schools be Manadatory? Essay, the entire world that interviews people. Creative? SO, maybe *you* dont care, but maybe other people do. I dont have an opinion one way or another, but Im sick of the way people state facts on timing devices, here as if they are universal truths, when really, they are just personal opinions. Creative? If its a personal opinion, it should be stated as such. That was a reply to on marriage Anon, and not KM. I interview people as well, and I disagree rather strongly. Social life isnt how Id put it, but did something other than spend four years in the library cramming is essay a plus for me. I want to have an idea of whether a candidate can manage multiple priorities at once, take charge of and execute projects, and has a sense of the world outside of his or her transcript. College activities can make a difference in To Be Or Not Online: Big Bad Little, that case. @cbackson: I feel like I can get that from an creative, in-person interview, thoughthe sense that this person was not a grind and will be personable and good to have around the office.

Hearing it touted as an accomplishment, thoughseems very unprofessional. I dont look as highly on people who highlight Greek experience on their resumes when Im the did blaise, one doing the interviewing. (A mention is fine.) I dont think it was rude either, and I agree with Ruby that if a person cant balance college and social activities, the social activities should go. When I am reviewing someones resume, I dont care about creative essay, their social activities. What does interest me is actual community service/leadership/volunteer roles they took on. If someone actually held a real leadership role in their sorority, then for me it is Essay relevant.

If they were just a member of a sorority and did not have any leadership role or responsibilities, I couldnt care less. I think social activities are helpful, particularly in a profession where you will have to work to essay get business. Timing Devices? Being in creative, a sorority is at To Be Little least somewhat indicative of your abilities to socialize with others, and essay, it also will give you connections that can help in the long term. As an timing devices, employer, I think it would be a plus. Being in a sorority is at creative essay least somewhat indicative of shakespeare on marriage, your abilities to socialize with others I dont think thats true. Pledges are selected for lots of different reasons depending on the particular chapter, it could just be indicative that your mom was in the same sorority, or that your dad is rich, or that you are a stereotypical mean girl. Social skills are important, but they inevitably come out in the interview. Like I said below, I dont think it hurts to put your sorority on your resume, but unless you did something special in essay, it (chapter president, charity work, etc) I dont think it helps, either.

I dont think youre rude, merely inaccurate. To Be Web And The Three Little? Whether college is hard depends on where you went to essay school, what you majored in, how hard you worked, whether you had to work at timing devices a job outside of creative essay, your studies, what else was going on with you life. Also important is whether the graduate school or field youre applying to cares whether youre well-rounded. In some fields, they just want you to on marriage have a terrific academic record and to creative essay be a decent person, not the life of the did blaise, party or president material. I confess to having a bias against essay, people who flaunt their Greek connections. My Ivy League school didnt have fraternities at timing devices the time (or they were very low-key). Instead, there were private clubs that were very snobby and creative essay, which I couldnt have afforded to join even had I been asked. The membership of those clubs were mainly rich preppies and other assorted jerks. At least they many of them were smart. They produced people like Winkelvoss twins. For me, and factory, Im sure it is a stereotype, Greek organizations produce stupid, rowdy frat boys and sorority sisters who are incredibly parochial, undistinguished, uninteresting, and they never outgrow it.

Theyre low-rent snobs. If I have a choice, I take high-rent. I should note that most people at my college did not belong to the private clubs. They were exclusive, small, and incredibly expensive. Undergraduate life was centered on the residential dorms, each of essay, which had a unique identity and a separate academic head.

I think that it is fine to highlight a sorority on Should Essay, your resume, but just be sure to talk about the relevant aspects such as volunteering and community involvement rather than mixers and rushing. Personally, I feel that everyone knows sororities/frats are all about creative essay, socializing/drinking/partying or at pink ghetto least that is creative essay what they were at my school. It also depends on the field/interviewer. My sister did get her foot in the door at her current position because she and the interviewer were in the same sorority. I think this is the resume value potential connections after law school. And, as a partial aside, I know that there are certain people in pink ghetto, the Greek community who espouse the view that leadershipand particularly, Greek leadershipis a huge plus factor for law school admissions. I found this out creative essay when a friends mom expressed dismay that I got into a much better law school than her daughter, despite my lack of Greek connections. While snarky in shakespeare, tone, the point is still valid.

Everyone balances social life and work (be it college or otherwise) in creative, whatever way it happens. Some do so with an active social life (i.e. time with friends and family), while others are much less social. I think Anon 3:32 pm might mean that we ALL have to make this balance in the way that works for what pascal invent us. Over time, this balance can include aging parents, young children, spouse / SOs career, and so forth. Sometimes our inability to essay balance shows in timing devices, work performance (lower grades, fewer billable hours, etc.). Regardless, grades (measure of creative, work performance) and Online: Big Bad Little Businesses, activites together can show time management and essay, ability to balance competing priorities. A student who took a leadership role, whether editing law review or serving as elected official in any student group or being a member of a sports team, can position that experience. Thus, I wouldnt say balance college and social life. I would say while maintaining X grades, I worked Y hours / spent Y hours in leadership role in pascal invent, organization Z.

College is not hard? Try being Pre-Med. but isnt it obvious that everyones comments are their personal opinions, whether they state them as such or not? does that have to explicitly stated? or is your issue more with the tone of creative essay, some peoples comments in general? My issue is did blaise pascal invent with the tone. Creative Essay? And its not all that obvious that people dont believe that their own person opinion is fact.

For instance: If you dont like the reality that I dont really care if you managed to balance a social life with academics, get over it. The real world doesnt care that you did. Sure, *you* dont care that someone did, but someone may. To say, the real world doesnt care implies that you speak for all of us living in pink ghetto, the real world. In fact, lots of other hiring managers in this same thread said that they took those (or other) factors into account. I think a lot of this is geographical.

I live in the Northeast. I am in two scholastic honor societies that sound like sororities. My advisors always tell me to list them and then to put next to it (academic honor society.) I have a friend who was in essay, an engineering fraternity. Factory System? He also spells his out rather than just using the greek letters. Im not sure if this means that there is a bias against the greek system up here or not. That said, I have family in the South and in some parts you are seen as really odd if you were NOT in some kind of greek life. I think there is creative essay much less stigma around it there and it would be more useful for networking. I find that at some colleges in did blaise, the North, there were only creative, a few greek societies so it was only the shakespeare, true party guy or girl that joined. I was going to post something similar regarding geographical differences. I think Id leave it off in the Northeast, but it might be perfectly acceptable in the South. Of course, I wasnt in a sorority and essay, less than 10% of To Be Or Not The Tale, my school belonged to them.

I would agree with the creative essay, statement that these affiliations can evoke vastly different reactions depending on the geographic area (for example, physical proximity to the school where the interviewers might know of the specific chapter of the Greek organization), but I dont think the what did blaise pascal, reaction will be a blanketed approval or disapproval based on creative essay, the region of the country. To say that Greek organizations in the South (or any region, for that matter) have less of a stigma than others is, in my opinion, untrue. I think the reaction to pink ghetto Greek references on essay, resumes varies tremendously depending solely on the interviewers and their previous interaction (or lack thereof) with Greek organizations. As unpredictable as that is, theres simply no way to know how your interviewers will feel about your sorority involvement. My personal opinion is that the shakespeare on marriage, potential harm outweighs the potential for it to help. This. Sure, there is essay a chance that your interviewer will be from your sorority. But there is an definition, even bigger chance that your interviewer will harbor negative feelings or stereotypes against sorority girls, either because of essay, a bad experience or because that is how sororities are often portrayed in popular media. The chance of meeting a fellow sister who might help you out is pretty minimal compared to the chance of meeting someone who hates sorority girls or at pink ghetto the very least isnt impressed by creative them. Too risky, in my opinion. I was about to say that I also associate Greek life with the South.

Its not always a good thing to raise the possibility that one is a good old boy or girl. Fraternities and sororities have only To Be Online: The Tale Big Bad Web And The Three Little Businesses, themselves to blame for these negative associations. The hazings, the cruel humiliations, the petty tyrannies, the racism, I could go on creative essay, and on. My advice would be to leave it off, because Im probably one of the people biased against factory, fraternity and creative, sorority members. I wouldnt say that Im biased against the members, and pink ghetto, I have and had plently of creative, friends who were in timing devices, them, but the whole concept just makes me cringe and Ive never understood why people join them. (I have a facebook friend, who was a close friend in college, who is constantly posting about her sisters and being involved in some sort of ongoing alumni greek stuff. Creative Essay? We graduated college almost 10 years ago, so it really leaves me scratching my head.) So Im having a hard time separating out that bias from the question. Someone else said they listed it as community involvement, and I think that that would be appropriate, but Id make sure that I was clear what actual duties and responsibilities it involved, not just the affiliation. Ill admit to an eyeroll when I see sororities or fraternities on resumes. Pink Ghetto? But I went to school in the Northeast (and live there now) though I am from VA and base it on essay, scenes I didnt really appreciate. My gut reaction upon learning about someones Greek membership is that the person is pink ghetto a c0nformist. N.B., Im talking about essay, schools at which the regular undergrad residential options are attractive and a real alternative.

I think its fine to Schools put it a leadership position in your sorority on your resume. Being in a sorority or fraternity is essay very common, and did blaise pascal, I dont think its likely to creative cause you to be discriminated against and it could even help if the person reading your resume was a member of the same sorority. To Be Of The Web And Businesses? I dont think it matters whether or not you put the name of your sorority; it probably depends on how your resume is laid out. If youre just putting bullet points under your college name, Id probably put Sorority chapter president. Essay? If you do put the Greek name, you should add sorority afterwards (e.g. Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority chapter president) because there are other organizations that use Greek letters and it may not be obvious to someone reading your resume that youre referring to a sorority. I dont think its helpful to include a sorority on your resume if you werent in a leadership position. At best, its just resume filler in the same way that chess club would be.

Full disclosure: I went to a very heavily Greek undergrad, so I may be unaware of pascal, biases that exist among graduates of creative, schools that are not so heavily Greek. I agree, Ruby. Putting the To Be Online: Of The Big Bad Businesses, name doesnt matter. Putting Served as president of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority under your university information may be all thats required. Creative Essay? In Reader Cs case, she could put led and organized ___ for ___ sorority and served as counselor to definition students going through rush process. I would explain it as simply as possible and creative, not assume people know the letters of your sorority or what certain positions mean. Disclosure: I served as president of my sorority, and it has never gone on my resume. What Ruby said.

I was in Online: The Tale Big Bad Web And The Three Little, a sorority in creative essay, undergrad and what did blaise pascal invent, was minimally involved. I later regretted not taking that opportunity to creative get some leadership experience, which I think would have been helpful on Should Schools be Manadatory?, my resume. I would absolutely never give any hint of greek affiliation in any professional context, no matter how sparse your resume may otherwise appear. Creative Essay? The bias against the stereotypical ditzy, Ugg-wearing sorority girl is so prevalent, and I know many people who proudly admit to Should Schools Uniforms be Manadatory? using this excuse to eliminate job candidates. On the other hand, I know talented, mature women for whom sorority days are a very fond memory.

But they dont put it on their resumes because they know theyll have to compensate for the prejudice it would inspire. The vehemence of this comment gives me pause. After having gone to undergrad, law school, and worked in the NE, I was surprised how genuinely accepting (i.e., not engaging in stereotyping) people are at all stages of sorority participation. Being from the South, I assumed there would be a different attitude, but I havent encountered it. From a normative point of view, it is very sad to me that prospective employers would use membership in a womens organization to weed out creative job candidates. I wouldnt expect someone to hire someone because they were in pink ghetto, a sorority (grades, experience, accomplishments should matter), just as I wouldnt expect someone NOT to creative hire someone for the same reason (grades, experience, accomplishments should matter). I live in the Pacific Northwest, so perhaps the difference is geographical, as others have suggested. Timing Devices? The problem, as I see it, is the stereotype in my community at creative least, that sororities are not really seen as supportive of women, but instead are thought of as anti-intellectual and cliquey, with a heavy emphasis on drinking. It may not be true, but a lot of people around here have that association, and with it, your resume goes in shakespeare, the recycle bin. Im in creative essay, the Northeast and think this is on marriage a region where you definitely dont want to have a greek affiliation on essay, your resume.

I know very few people who were actually in (or admit to being in) a sorority or fraternity and timing devices, I think it is generally not viewed positively here. I would say you could list it as a womens organization on your resume, but I think the conversation would be very awkward if someone asked you about it and you had to fess up that it was a sorority; they are not seen as promoting women in my experience. My guess is essay that Emma has encountered the anti-greek org attitude, just in pink ghetto, people who were decent enough not to be rude to her. *On the other hand, being in creative essay, New England, if you belonged to a final club or eating club, I think those help rather than hurt. Im sure its likely that Ive encountered people who have this attitude towards sororities I actually had no idea that it was this big an issue until this thread, and timing devices, youre probably right that people keep their real feelings mum. I should point out, though, that I dont wear my sorority membership on creative essay, my sleeve, never talk about it, and 90% of acquaintances dont know I was in one.

So, its not like sorority-detractors are tiptoeing around me or anything. I actually didnt really like being in a sorority maybe because I never stepped up and got involved. My mind is just blown that people think its okay to stereotype job applicants on this basis and Schools be Manadatory? Essay, I still resist that conclusion, to creative some extent. Because the vast majority of women in my sorority were involved in a number of laudable on-campus organizations, were serious students, and have met with extraordinary success post graduation, and it would be ridiculous for employers to conclude these women werent qualified based on the affiliation. *sorry, I resist the conclusion that stereotyping is a common practice missed some words there. I agree it is as silly a basis as anything else on Of The Big Bad Web And The Three Businesses, which to stereotype, but I think it does happen. The economy is terrible, jobs are scarce, HR offices are inundated with resumes, and so I dont think it is worth putting something on your resume that someone out there might have an attitude about.

I feel the creative essay, same way about timing devices, any number of know your audience resume lines (religious activities, as discussed in a thread a few weeks ago, certain political activities, etc.). Your experience, though, shows more of the picture, I think. While people may stereotype when they have little else to go on (i.e. at essay the resume stage), they often dont lean on timing devices, the stereotype when they actually know the creative essay, person. So I would say once you are hired its fine to factory definition mention a sorority affiliation in appropriate contexts. I grew up in NYC, went to essay undergrad at Wellesley (in Massachusetts), then worked in banking in NYC, then law school in DC (which I suppose is what invent borderline South but not really ) and Im now at a big firm in NYC. Creative Essay? Ive interviewed lots of pink ghetto, people and its never occurred to creative me to come to any conclusions about a candidate simply because he or she was in a fraternity or sorority. And I have a hard time believing that one thing alone really could be so determinative. Maybe all these haters are just jealous because they didnt get into the club/sorority/whatever they desired, or the sorority girls at their schools got all the attention or something. For the record, there were no sororities at my undergrad. As someone who grew up went to college in shakespeare, New England, I dont even know what a final club or eating club is.!

@AOM, dont you think thats as much of generalization as anyone else is making? Just people dont like sororities or dont think you should put it on your resume doesnt mean they were outcasts or snubbed. When I have a bias, I usually go out of essay, my way to be fair. Shakespeare? But as the creative, writer SPECIFICALLY ASKED whether listing a Greek affiliation would be a problem its appropriate that she gets our unvarnished opinions. Actually, I didnt think there would be such a negative reaction. Good to know. Harvard has Final clubs, Princeton Eating clubs, and pink ghetto, I suppose the Yale equivalent are the Secret Societies.

For whatever its worth, in creative essay, The Social Network, the character of pink ghetto, Mark Zuckerberg is motivated in creative, large part by revenge at being turned down by what pascal the Final Clubs at Harvard. Essay? He has to make due with the Jewish fraternity, which he thinks is a social come-down. Membership in these clubs has been a big deal socially for a very long time. Joseph P. Or Not To Be Online: The Tale Of The Big Bad Little? Kennedy, JFKs father, was bitterly disappointed by essay being turned down by Porcellian, as was FDR. I agree with the Schools Essay, commenter who said that in the NE membership in essay, one of those clubs is probably a plus. The fact that I know this crap doesnt mean I approve. But were not 10 year olds and these things do matter to Schools Essay some people quite a bit.

Harvard grad here, originally from the NYC area and still in the northeast. I think final club guys are THE WORST and creative, would have a huge bias if ones resume crossed my desk. Is every last person from one a pretentious sleaze ball? No. Are many of them successful professionally? Yes, of course. Pink Ghetto? But ick!! If someone were asking my advice as to whether he should list that he was in the Owl, my answer would be a resounding no. i can state without any hesitation that my involvement in greek life has helped my chances with many job opportunities. if someone was involved in greek life, my affiliation and leadership positions come up almost every time i interviewed. if not, im sure someone interviewing me saw it on my resume, but they chose not to bring it up, and no harm no foul.

while im sure some professors love to hold on to antiquated view of the greek system that comes from watching animal house too many times, i would be shocked if all feel that way as any professor i counseled about creative essay, my resume in college felt that including greek life involvement was an added bonus. it all goes back to this one of the reasons i joined a sorority was because it made it easier to timing devices make friends and creative, find mentors through college. in my post-grad life, it still makes it easier to on marriage have a commonality, but not all of my friends are greek. Creative? those that judge my involvement either dont know/understand greek life, or are too close-minded to care. do you want a boss who is too close-minded to recognize your leadership role in an organization of. 300 women (such were numbers at my school)? I went to Northwestern (Kats alma mater). I held leadership positions in my sorority and To Be To Be Online: Of The Big Bad Web And The Three Businesses, put them on my resume when applying for jobs. Creative Essay? I networked heavily and went to bat for younger sorority sisters of mine to be hired by Or Not Of The Little the company I worked for.

Look, employers can tell by your personal presentation whether you are a serious young woman or not. They can tell by your school what kinds of academic chops you have. If its a leadership position, put it. My sorority sisters were highly accomplished top medical schools, law schools, business schools, and graduate programs. Yes, there are ditzy sorority girls at other schools, but thats irrelevant to smart girls going to good schools. Personally, my law school is big on soft factors when evaluating people for admissions. Creative? They would be impressed by pink ghetto any substantial leadership position and likely wouldnt have much against Greek affiliations if sold in creative essay, that fashion. A more pretentious or strictly by the pascal invent, numbers admissions committee may feel differently. I really feel like it all comes down to how you sell it. I had a leadership position in my (very large, national) sorority that was relevant to the positions I was looking at (it involved substantial leadership and PR experience).

Several times in interviews I had interviewers react positively to my Greek affiliation, and creative essay, I know for a fact that it helped me get my first post-grad job. Shakespeare On Marriage? So I would absolutely include it on creative essay, the resume, with the Greek letters. Writing sorority president just seems silly to me, and not as legitimate as Alpha Beta Delta International Sorority President of Alpha Chapter (dont know if thats a real organization, just chose them randomly). If the The Tale The Three, interviewer brings it up, dont say you led a group of girls say you were the vice president of a committee of 20 women. Say recuitment not rush, women not girls or sisters, organization not chapter. Talk about philanthropy events, not mixers, and creative essay, if you did plan mixers, call them events. Act proud of your position and of your time spent with the Uniforms Essay, organization. Most people understand that there some sororities are very serious and creative, professional and some are all about shakespeare, partying, just make it clear that yours was the creative, former. Be proud of your experience, you worked hard for it! This.

Tweak that resume until it twists right into place! Its all in the framing. Agreed! Dont let the people interviewing you insert their own stereotypes about greek life. Explain why the on marriage, position was meaningful in professional, concrete terms. Agreed. Essay? And Im pretty much anti-sorority (because my experience of sororities at my university was that their dual goals was to make fun of women who were not in the sorority, and party). But if you discuss it in the context of organizing, leading, setting up things, etc., I can see it as a positive. I agree. I would focus on the functions one performed. Agreed.

Ill add that, although I was in a sorority myself, I wouldnt list it on my resume if I hadnt held a leadership position that I was prepared to speak about in pascal, interviews and connect to creative essay my career. Now that I posted my substantive comment, forgive me for two threadjacks. 1.) I have a blue leather Brooks Brothers bag. It has suede lining inside. Should Schools Uniforms Be Manadatory?? Little particles are coming off the lining that look like the essay, junk leftover after using an eraser. It is getting all over my stuff. I think I am going to try vacuuming it out. Other ideas? 2.) I was recently asked ot join a very prestigous board in my community. I just went to the first meeting.

Since it was all new to me, I took a lot of personal notes, in nice handwriting, etc. What Did Blaise Invent? The head of the board, a nice older gentleman commented after I think we know who our next secretary should be! (Meaning Secretary of the creative, Board, minute taker, etc.) I am a big fan of NGDGTCO. It stresses that women should avoid note taking roles. Is this one of Or Not To Be Online: The Tale The Three, those situations or would it be an honor to have an executive position on creative, this super prestigous board? 1) No idea Im afraid.

Double sided tape maybe? 2) How are the psitions decided? I.e. To Be Of The Web And The Three? will there be an opportunity for you to put yourself forward to be e.g. treasurer, or ask someone to propose you for a role? If that is an option then you may be able to creative avoid the secretary position that way. The other question is, would the secretary have (1) a vote and/or (2) any other duties? Will a no to both make you not want to what did blaise do it? Will there be an opportunity to be elected to creative essay a different position later on? The trouble is, people end up get self-selected when they are good at something, even if that isnt something they enjoy/want to be perceived as doing. If it is timing devices a choice of not being on the board at all or being secretary, I would pick being secretary, but if you have an option, then its a different ball game. I dont know what the answer is, but just some food for thought If your board has a clear ladder to becoming Chair (Secretary, then Treasurer, then Vice Chair, then Chair), Id do it.

Otherwise, Id say dont become the essay, next little girl he gets to take advantage of. System Definition? He can take his own *#)*!# notes. Normally I would totally agree about creative essay, note-taking and shakespeare, the potential pitfalls/pigeonholes/etc. However, I agree with this comment about potentially climbing the boards leadership ladder. I am President/Chair (different boards call it different things) of essay, a board that oversees a large non-profit organization. The Executive Committee is timing devices comprised of the officers of the creative, board (Pres, VP, Secretary and Should Schools Uniforms Essay, Treasurer) and thats the group that handles all personnel issues and other sensitive issues that do not fall to the entire board.

Its very valuable experience and leadership development. If youd get a seat on the Executive Committee (or something similar), Id take it! It seems that the gentleman suggested you for the position because you have demonstrated the creative, necessary skills, and timing devices, not because hes pigeonholing you based on gender. Creative? The reason NGDGTCO says to avoid notetaking roles is because you dont want to pink ghetto be pigeonholed based on creative, gender. In this case, and especially since its an Online: Of The Web And The Three Little, executive, leadership position, I think even Lois Frankel herself would tell you to essay take it. The only caveat Id add is to make sure you know what the job entails. Since youre new to the board, you may not want to get hit with a lot of responsibilities while youre still getting used to just being a member of the board. I think Lois Frankel would say to suggest a rotation.

Its not life-and-death how accurate the notes are, so it would not be a huge problem if Charlie takes notes next week and Uniforms Essay, they arent as nice as yours. So, fairness would say that you take turns as notetaker, either on a meeting rotation, or a month rotation, or whatever. Just so its clear from the outset that you are not the Permanent Secretary. And be sure to creative avoid other secretarial responsibilities. You are not ordering the food, you are not booking the conference rooms. Just like notetaking, it should all rotate. What Pascal Invent? Id also suggest that the notetaker not be the food-orderer, just to creative keep the pink ghetto, admin responsibilities distributed.

Are there any senior women on this board? Have there ever been any? I would try to get in touch with them for a cup of creative essay, coffee to see how this board works. I assume (based on membership on a board myself) that being secretary involves a lot more than just taking notes. Its an pink ghetto, executive board position! Taking minutes is just the essay, most visible duty, and if its a board that has reporting requirements, it may be an incredibly important duty as well. Im surprised to see a lawyer state that meeting notes arent extremely important. (I assume that this is an organization of shakespeare, some importance.) But yes, if its a dog job, the OP should try to essay rotate the To Be Or Not To Be Of The Big Bad The Three Businesses, task. Regarding the creative, BB bag, I dont have solutions but I think if you were dissatisfied and wanted to return it that BB has a generous guarantee policy. On the BOD question, a board Secretary is different from someone taking notes at Should Uniforms a firms meeting or event. Being made to take notes at a company meeting can be (but is not always) demeaning.

If being a BOD Secretary on the Executive Committee would get you more visibility with members, personal access to Board Members and publicity/kudos with your employer, then that is a great benefit and I would say to go for it. Some BODs pay for secretarial services such as newsletters, filing of board meeting minutes etc., and those would be tasks that would be more drudge work. 1) Try emptying the creative essay, bag, flipping it inside out, and lightly brushing the suede lining with a soft brush. You can find brushes made specially for cleaning suede, but a softer scrubbing brush (like a mushroom brush) should work just as well. Congratulations on being selected to To Be Of The Web And The Three the board! And as someone in the nonprofit world, thank you for creative taking your job seriously too many people do not. Find out what exactly the did blaise pascal invent, roles of secretary are. On our board, the secretary is essay part of the executive committee and is therefore more involved with decisions about the organization. Uniforms Be Manadatory?? I would think that is only a good thing for you.

My sense has always been that law school admissions offices are impressed by creative leadership, so it could be worth keeping your Greek activities on pink ghetto, your resume. Even if professors or students are biased against creative, sororities, admissions offices work with a broad range of students and might be more open to what your experiences. Creative Essay? (You have to Should Schools Uniforms figure that theyve met smart sorority girls before.) Different but related: if you apply to Teach for America, definitely put all of your Greek activities on creative, your resume! TFA loves leadership experience in pink ghetto, any context, and a lot of TFA corps members were in Greek organizations as undergrads. I included my sorority affiliation and offices on my resume when applying to law school and summer internships. I listed it with other information under my undergraduate institution entry scholarships, awards, community service groups and creative, the like. And 12 years later, I still have it on my resume under the Interests section no offices anymore, just the name of the sorority. I have reviewed dozens of resumes for summer associate candidates and nearly all of pink ghetto, them list their Greek affiliations and essay, any offices they held. This is one time when I really disagree with KatI interview candidates for/sit on the admissions board of a top 10 masters program (not bragging, just stating) and leadership is an EXTREMELY important part of the admissions process and is quantitatively factored into the candidates score. Should Schools? Perhaps this is essay different for law school admissions?

From my experience, I would highly encourage candidates to put all leadership positions and meaningful activities on a graduate school resume (i.e. System Definition? volunteer work, Greek life activities) I live in the south and was a member of the Greek system in creative, college so take this for what its worth, but I am not offended or put off in timing devices, the least by seeing Greek life activities on a students resume. It has actually HELPED candidates because there were often very concrete examples of leadership and ethics that were demonstrated and have given prompts of things for me to talk about. Ive noticed a trend in the past year or so for students to just list Social Sorority instead of the creative essay, actual affiliation and I dont like that as much because knowing the actual affiliation can help with connections and ice-breakingOh I know such and such advisor or My sister in law was an XYZ at your school as well. Absolutely put your Greek affiliation on your resume, especially if you held a leadership position. As a member of a Greek organization who is also currently an alumna volunteer, I can say 100% that my affiliation with my Greek organization has helped me in my career.

The abilities that you get from being a member of an organization leadership, philanthropy, working in teams are highly useful in Should Uniforms Essay, the outside world. I have had friends who put their affiliation on essay, their resume and their interviewer was either a member of a Greek organization (so it gives you some common ground) or even a member of the same organization. Be proud of the organization that you voluntarily chose to be a part of. I absolutely wouldnt list it, but I bet that this is regional. I am in the northeast and many people here would look on a sorority girl as fluffy, and a greek guy as a tool.

Completely, completely, 100% agree. I would never put a Greek affiliation on factory, a resume and if I saw one, I would think that the creative essay, individual was just scraping to shakespeare find things to put on a resume. (And this is coming from a former sorority girl who held numerous chapter and Greek-system wide leadership positions.) If youre in the Greek system and are truly interested in essay, leadership, youre going to be doing things that are far more impressive (like honor societies, elected student government offices, etc.) that would be worthwhile to put on pink ghetto, a resume. If you have to list Greek activities, my guess would be that you arent doing much else. At my school, student government and essay, honor societies were WAY less impressive accomplishments, and much easier leadership opportunities, than Green organizations. Huh, thats interesting. Pink Ghetto? Where I went to school, things like Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board actually meant something and being involved in student government was a lot of work. Essay? Greek leadership, even if you were a VP/President, was not all that impressive.

PBK was more prestigious at Or Not To Be Online: The Tale Of The Big Bad Web And The Three Little Businesses my college (and its still on my resume 8 years later, while my sorority is not), but it didnt offer any leadership opportunities at creative essay all. It didnt *do* anything, it just existed as an timing devices, indicator of academic success. I can echo cs situation basically anyone at my undergrad school who wanted a student government position could find one, and the student government had very little sway or power over anything that mattered at the university level. Honor societies (besides Phi Beta Kappa) were open to anyone with a certain GPA in their major, so while still impressive, it didnt demonstrate anything not already covered on the resume. The Panhellenic Society, which was the essay, umbrella organization for shakespeare on marriage Greek groups, had a lot of funding from alumni and voice in creative essay, the administration because of their abilities to pink ghetto generate alumni support. So they tended to have more competitive elections, executive boards, and more impressive tasks as far as budgeting, marketing, and planning events.

And I say all this as an creative essay, impartial observer who spent 90% of my time outside of class with the equestrian team. I completely agree, mainly because my good friend was in charge of screening resumes for a well regarded consulting firm, and Should Schools be Manadatory?, she definitely screened out everyone who put a leadership position from a Greek organization (although particularly frats, rather than sororities) because she knew the schools, and knew that most of the leadership positions meant pledge-master etc. Also, I think that social activities and creative, leadership roles are extremely important, but something like a Greek organization is something you do for yourself. You go to college to excel at school, and if you happen to be amazing enough to be able to excel socially as well, this will come across in many more flattering ways than Greek membership. I would never put my eating club on my resume, for example. This I think its pretty clear at this point that this is a regional issue. I think part of the problem is that in the NE, schools that actually have sororities/fraternities are not as common, and the ones that do have them have sometimes had very difficult relationships with them (see the recent lawsuit at Online: Businesses Yale www(dot)theblaze(dot)com/stories/yale-students-file-sexual-harassment-suit-against-the-university/ ). I went to creative essay school in Or Not To Be Online: The Tale Of The Big Bad Little Businesses, the south, but work in the NE, and whereas I would have definitely put an affiliation (Im not, but speaking hypothetically) down if I was interviewing in essay, the south, I would not nowadays. Well, MIT is in the northeast, and shakespeare on marriage, they have a Greek life. So does Dartmouth. Im going to creative essay disagree slightly.

I was in a sorority as an undergrad in the South, went to law school in NYC, and later worked at system a big NY firm. I think its fine to creative essay list a leadership sorority position on pink ghetto, a law school application to a school in creative, the Northeast, unless it was social chair (or the equivalent). I dont think law schools will discount participation in a sorority, unless it looks like thats all you did. As for including a sorority leadership position on timing devices, a resume for interviews, I think it depends. I wouldnt absolutely rule it out in the Northeast, particularly for on-campus interviews where you have assigned interviews by essay lottery. If you know you can come across as flighty, young, or bubbly, I would leave it off because interviewers may be more apt to stereotype you. Factory Definition? In my case, I did not fit the creative essay, stereotypical sorority girl so I wasnt worried about making that impression. I also think it matters what kind of leadership position you had. I was responsible for enforcing the standards and pink ghetto, rules of creative essay, my sorority, and I thought this was actually slightly relevant to a legal career. Shakespeare On Marriage? At the very least, it showed that I was perceived as a rule follower. That doesnt hurt.

I dont remember very many people asking me about it during on-campus and subsequent interviews. If they did, I emphasized what I did (enforced standards and creative essay, rules), downplayed the social aspects, and moved on Should Schools Uniforms Essay, to another topic. However, I definitely took this off my resume once I got my first job at a firm and had professional experience to describe (I now work in creative, house). Finally, Id like to To Be Or Not To Be The Tale Of The Big Bad The Three point out one unanticipated benefit of being in a sorority. Essay? Nothing prepared me more for the on-campus interview experience than sorority rush. At my undergrad school, rush was very organized and programmed. At a particular time, you would show up at a sorority, and pink ghetto, meet with a certain number of essay, sorority members for a set amount of time.

It was like speed dating. Or on-campus interviews. As a participant on both sides of the rush process, I graduated from school able to To Be Online: Big Bad Web And The Three Little Businesses make small talk with anyone about anything in a short period of time. And I was also prepared for the process of being on and speaking about the same topics with different people consecutively for hours. Essay? It also helped keep the on-campus interview process in perspective. Its just like rush slightly ridiculous and random. Your last paragraph spot on. Factory Definition? Rush and OCI are similarly exhausting.

I made the creative, connection too when I was doing OCI my 1L year. You also talk about similar things believe it or not or at shakespeare least, I found that to be true. Quite interesting and my ?0.02 is perhaps not as useful since we dont have the essay, Greek system in To Be Or Not To Be Online: Big Bad Web And, the UK, but I cant help but recall the creative, part in To Be To Be Online: The Tale Web And Little, Legally Blonde 2 where Elle meets the Congresswoman who was in creative, her sorority. I expect there are too many different sororities to count, but I expect at pink ghetto least some will provide you a great network and if, for example, you knew that a hiring partner had been a member of the same sorority as you, why not put it down on your CV? Leadership roles and grad school applications? I would definitely leave it on. Theres so much more thats more important grades, LSAT, letters of creative, rec that I cant imagine this mattering much and factory definition, you definitely dont want to eliminate leadership. Now for law school internships, where your resume is front and center, Id probably take it off or make it a one-liner at most.

To echo those who were involved in essay, Greek life, I absolutely think you should include it. If you were just a member without any job, its debatable, but its something you devoted time to and held leadership. I am matriculating this year to law school and I absolutely think every aspect of my resume scored me my spot in the class, including my Vice President position in my sorority. I have also had multiple instances where you instantly connect with someone because they were either involved in Greek life or were in your same sorority. The networking potential is great so wear your Greek affiliation loud and proud (though dont go overboard, as we all know there is more to life) Good Luck, as someone who just went through the shakespeare on marriage, admissions process, its tenuous but it all pays off. Do you know what tenuous means? I think not.

Yeah. Not sure how youd confirm that being VP of your sorority sealed the deal for creative essay your admission to law school. Hey, Judgy McJudgerson! Lets just assume it was a typo. To Be Or Not To Be The Tale Web And Businesses? Strenuous?

I was thinking arduous, actually And I was thinking torturous or tortuous! I give the benefit of the doubt and assume brain fart, since I have them so frequently. Regardless of her mistake, blatantly pointing it out essay like that was very rude. Its Midol time!

Meow! Eew, effing hate that, sorry. Rudeness isnt catty just because its from a woman. Just curious what makes you think the what pascal, VP spot was so helpful? (Comment from an creative, admissions counselor?) And what type of school are you going to national, regional, rough rankings range? As a partner in a law firm, I would recommend listing your affiliation if you had a leadership role. I have always been proud of my affiliation and timing devices, leadership roles in my sorority, and I consider the leadership of over 100 other people women! to be a sign of the respect of your peers, the essay, acceptance of timing devices, responsibility at a young age, and the willingness to rise to a challenge you did not have to take on. My involvement in my sorority actually led me to be hired for my first summer internship. I held the position of creative, Public Relations officer and, as someone going into pink ghetto advertising, many of my potential employers were impressed that I already had experience with advertising, media management, and other skills. In my opinion, if it shows your experience or qualifications for the position for which you are applying, it doesnt make you look like a vapid sorority girl.

Id say, dont just put it on your resume to have it there, but if it helps your case, it could be an interesting piece to creative add. I live in shakespeare, the South and my Sorority affiliation and leadership roles have been tremendously helpful in networking and job transition. Through my alum club, I was a board member for a holiday marketplace that generates close to essay $1M each year for charity. My budget was over $40K and my position involved a lot of what pascal invent, contract negotiation. Creative Essay? That experience helped me to show a broader skills set and range of experience beyond my law practice in a recent job transition. To Be Or Not To Be Big Bad The Three? You can join a Sorority to socialize and be a ditz or you can take it as an opportunity to lead. I have met many admirable, high-achieving women through my Sorority affiliation.

I ignore the others. I would include it but focus on essay, what you achieved in your leadership role. For example, I was social chair of my sorority in college. When applying to graduate school, my resume indicated that I solely managed a budget of $X and planned X number of events per factory year and helped coordinate fundraisers for essay X charity. If you can make it look more like a job than a social club, then it will help. Now, 4 years out of system, school, there is no mention of my greek affiliation on my resume because my actual job experience is creative essay more impressive and applicable. I live in the northeast where Greek life is not as popular as it is in other parts of the country. Factory Definition? Though I have been asked some interesting questions in creative essay, interviews, those questions are another opportunity to sell yourself. Factory Definition? Definitely list your affiliation and leadership positions, and creative essay, explain why they are relevant.

Focus on Schools Uniforms, what you did in creative, those roles, i.e.: managed other officers who reported to you, chaired committee (especially the judicial board, risk management and pink ghetto, educational roles), planned philanthropic events attended by X number of people that raised Y dollars, and so on. Also focus on creative essay, skills that you developed in those roles problem solving, fiscal responsibility, public speaking, making presentations, etc. Consider talking to shakespeare on marriage your chapter adviser, regional adviser or another local alumna who is also a professional she can definitely help you express your experience in a positive, business-friendly way. Your campus Greek adviser or career center are great resources also. Creative Essay? Good luck!! Honestly, I dont think the factory definition, resume is going to matter much for law school admissions. Its going to be about essay, GPA and her LSAT (though I suppose it might be more of an issue if youre applying to the kind of school where all applicants have 4.0s and 180s!).

It will probably be more of an issue for job/internship applications, where they may actually look at the resume seriously. This is a little Pollyanna-ish, but I guess I would say, if its important to timing devices you if feel proud of what you did and that you accomplished stuff in those positions I would put it on creative essay, the resume. Or Not To Be Big Bad Web And Little Businesses? Sure, some people are biased against sororities (I used to essay be), but the networking opportunities can also be amazing. Timing Devices? Youre not going to be able to essay predict which kind of reader youre going to get. And do you want to shakespeare have to hide a part of your life if its something thats meaningful to you? (I know naive but I thought Id throw it out essay there.) I disagree.

Most schools will aim for some diversity, and if youre just going for what did blaise pascal invent people with the 4.0/180 (or highest scores possible) you may be weeding out a lot of creative, good applicants. I know in Or Not Big Bad Little, my school it was much easier to come in with a lower GPA as an older applicant (e.g. 5+ years out of undergrad) because they had more to offer in terms of real life skills, often had graduate degree, and finished undergrad at a time when GPAs tended to creative essay be lower. I know from the Online: The Tale Of The Big Bad Web And Little, time I graduated to the time I applied to law school, the median GPA at my undergrad went up by .3. My school also was eager to recruit applicants with certain academic backgrounds as well. To MelD and R I do think schools look for diversity. I just also dont think those factors outweigh GPA/LSAT. Maybe to distinguish between students who have the essay, same scores, sure but if your scores arent competitive for a given school, a great resume wont make up for that, and To Be To Be Online: The Tale Of The Big Bad Web And The Three Businesses, if your scores are great for creative a given school, they wont care if youre an axe murderer. I totally disagree. Im helping a friend with his/her resume and this just came up. Pink Ghetto? The extra twist is that the creative essay, greek org s/he was in is religiously affiliated.

Does this mean s/he should leave it off? Im kinda torn, but since s/hes been out of school for a while now, Im suggesting to leave it off based on the too-old-to-matter rule. Ive seen this come up a bit in the Silicon Valley. Id only put it on if she (assuming female but I see it more often on resumes from males) had a leadership role and she has little relevant experience except for that leadership role. Id be extra careful to exclude wording that might be read as sexist, racist, or just plain I-dont think-shell-fit-in-our-office-culture (e.g., anything to do with evangelizing). And yes, Ive actually seen it on resumes for people (usually men) affiliated with certain religions. They didnt get interviews. If its on the resume, Id be prepared for some detailed questions about what she did, her role in the organization, how she handled a situation in the course of timing devices, her leadership role, etc. But then, I do know someone who scored a job because she and the interviewer have the same favorite Pope. Go figure.

Im slightly biased against Greek affiliations, but wouldnt hold it against someone. If you do list it, I think you need to essay consciously think about not appearing ditzy when interviewing. I absolutely say leave it on your resume. I was an active member of Greek life as an undergraduate and actually recently became active with a graduate chapter of my organization. To Be To Be The Tale Of The Little Businesses? My sorority membership has not only proved invaluable for networking purposes, its provided many mentorship opportunities as well as provided opportunities to creative essay participate in service projects and events that indicate that I have interests and shakespeare on marriage, a life outside of work that doesnt just involve happy hour or my significant other.

Having attended a small college where only about 10% of students participated in Greek life and being from the North, I am fully aware of and have dealt with the bias against sororities and creative essay, dismissive attitudes towards sorority girls, but not for nothing **this is where the chapter president in me comes raging out** stay true to your letters! Clearly, YOU believed there was some benefit to sorority membership and shakespeare on marriage, given the fact that you stepped up and took leadership roles, you clearly werent just using it as a social opportunity. Why hide that part of your development as a student and as a leader from potential employers? Acting ashamed of having Greek affiliation only creative essay, makes it seem as though there is something to Should Schools Uniforms Essay be ashamed of, when the truth of the matter is that student leaders within the Greek system were often among the hardest working students on campus- we had academic requirements to meet, mandatory events to attend, service projects as well as our own separate meetings, conferences, etc. to plan and attend, and YES, like any other college students, we also made time to creative essay party. Sitting on pascal, the interviewers side of the desk now, I actually appreciate seeing Greek life on a resume because it indicates to creative essay me that the person Im speaking to wasnt afraid to take the initiative and commit their time and The Tale Web And The Three Little, money to membership in a lifetime organization (most Greek orgs are supported SOLELY by membership dues so its a real commitment, especially for a student) and it also tells me that they probably have some experience balancing their obligations to an organization with internal conflicts (a houseful of fighting sorority sisters will STILL pull it together to spend all night assembling a winning homecoming float- can we say TEAMWORK?). If somebodys not willing to hire you because you were in a sorority or the wrong sorority, then theyre not somebody you want to creative work for anyway (what, youre gonna hide your past forever?). We dont tell athletes to leave their sports off the resume lest the pink ghetto, interviewer perceive them as a jock. And I doubt guys in creative, Fraternities (even the did blaise invent, ones who did nothing but haul kegs) think twice about listing it on their resumes! Womens social and service organizations are rarely respected and Im calling BS on it!

My attitude: Yes Im a sorority girl but dammit, Im a sorority girl with the qualifications and experience to make a dayum good addition to your institution so if you sleep on creative, me- trust and believe it will be YOUR loss. **steps off sorority colored soap box, picks up her sorority tote, and factory, stalks off to have dinner with her Fortune 500, BigLaw, changing the essay, world one-letter-at-a-time sorority sisters** I agree with all of this. I just cant get over the feeling that theres something distasteful about the underlying premise here. It is Should Schools be Manadatory? Essay certainly wrong that all sorority girls are homogenous. There are all types of sororities, all types of undergraduate institutions, all types of women who go into sororities for creative all types of reasons. Why would we ever want to factory system perpetuate stereotyping of women as ditzy simply because they were involved in a sorority? Maybe Im being too preachy, but if anyone encountered this attitude Id think youd want to combat it, not feed into it. I couldnt agree more. Do people really think that Greek life is creative essay still all about pledgemasters, keggers, and factory system, hazing? I went to school in the south, am now in the midwest, and have always had my sorority affiliation on creative essay, my resume.

I think its opened lots of doors for To Be Or Not Online: The Tale Of The Big Bad Web And Businesses me, and shows that I am a social person who will be more likely to creative essay talk to people and develop business. I also think its impressive to oversee $100,000 budget and manage executive board at 21 years old. So, my advice is to pink ghetto include the affiliation, especially if you were in creative essay, a leadership role. If you were an officer, then list specifically what your roles were. There are a lot of deadlines and paperwork for any national organization, and you can describe these things as though it was work experience that many recent grads may be lacking.

Do people really think that Greek life is still all about pledgemasters, keggers, and hazing? Yep. Many of us do. Then open your ears to what intelligent and serious women are saying on this thread that thats not the pink ghetto, case. I went to a college that tends to be very polarizing when people hear the name and I do not fit the essay, stereotype of the traditional alum of that school at all. I am conscious that many people will think Im like X when Im really anti-X. Sometimes my school opens doors, other times I have to shakespeare find ways to not have them slammed in my face. In many ways, Greek life is like that. If you know what people might be thinking about you, you can manage that.

If you dont know, you cant. Exactly. I might give you a stereotype of creative essay, ditzy, liking to go to shakespeare costume parties, and being overly into creative essay clothes and makeup and I will acknowledge it if needed, and continue to what did blaise pascal invent work to change the creative essay, stereotype. But pledgemasters and keggers really? Welcome to the 21st century were pledge and rush are dirty words, and every social event is approved by at least 5 professional women who volunteer their time as advisors, and pink ghetto, then attend the events.

As an intelligent and serious woman, I have personally observed an essay, entire dorm floor of To Be To Be Of The The Three, girls endlessly discuss their efforts to dress like clones for rush, and creative, was personally involved in pink ghetto, disciplining an entire sorority for sexist hazing that occurred at a kegger. This was at creative a very highly regarded university in the south, not just some party school, and less than ten years ago. Timing Devices? Your experience might have been very different, I know greek life is very varied. It also annoys me that a connection as minor as a sorority would open professional doors for someone, though I know its true. I cant imagine being more likely to essay hire someone because they also horseback rode, or any other affiliation I might have. It seems so superficial and Good Ol Boy, as if having the same (very expensive) hobby means you must be our kind. That said, if someone presented their sorority experience in a relevant way, Id look at it positively. While the stereotype has real origins for me, I also knew plenty of very smart and capable girls in sororities and pink ghetto, can see how it could provide excellent experience. Anon 10:53, I think that you summarized why I dont care for the idea of essay, sororities and wouldnt be impressed with the role. Did Blaise? The whole idea that you have some sort of connection (not even a connection, but a sister-ship) to someone just because you were involved in the same organization (which, by the way, you paid a hefty sum of money to join) bugs me. Creative Essay? Im not saying that its not the case or not going to pink ghetto help you, but, to creative essay my mind, it *shouldnt* be that way. Im typically one of those people that rolls her eyes when she sees sorority membership on shakespeare, a resume, but I have to creative say, you make a very convincing argument!

Well put. If somebodys not willing to hire you because you were in a sorority or the wrong sorority, then theyre not somebody you want to work for To Be Web And The Three Businesses anyway (what, youre gonna hide your past forever?). This is the second time I have seen this in this thread and it really bothers me. The last thing new grads need to believe is that they have the ability to pick and creative essay, choose, in this economy, who they will or wont work for based on who does and does not appreciate their Greek affiliation. If you ever read this thing called the news, you might have seen something about the massively terrible job market that young people are facing right now. The Tale The Three Little? In fact, I have seen figures indicating unemployment is hitting 18-24 year-olds the essay, hardest, with something like 25% of timing devices, that age group out of work. Essay? New-grad Corporetters, if someone offers you a job while mentioning they hate your sorority membership, for timing devices the love of God, TAKE THE JOB!! You have no idea how few and far between job offers are for very smart, motivated, talented grads are, especially in big markets. Its not about hiding your past, its about understanding how to creative essay be judicious about talking about pink ghetto, it (and despite what some ex-sorority girls on the thread want to believe, sorority membership is creative essay not really either that stupendous or salacious its just another thing people do in college, for the most part). The days when a 22-year-old could be really selective and say well, I wouldnt want to work for what did blaise those people anyway are WAAAAAYYYY over. You dont want to work for those people, huh?

Well, do you want to work at Dennys? For, like, the creative essay, next five years? Then suck it up, cover up your Greek letters tattoo, and take the job. THANK YOU! So tired of being judged by timing devices non-sorority women for being in essay, one. We dont judge you for not joining one!

That is timing devices really not the case, overall. You may not, but others most certainly do. I disagree. Unless you won a medal or a heisman trophy people should not put sports on their resume either. It just shows that you have nothing but fluff. Im sorry, but thats not a realistic analogy at all. Oh, and NE here, do NOT put a sorority on a resume. I think that having been a varsity-level athlete should definitely go on the resume it shows incredible self-discipline and essay, commitment, certainly more than I ever had or ever will have. I absolutely agree! I was the captain of my colleges varsity cheerleading team and it was probably the most influential experience of To Be Or Not Big Bad The Three Little, my life.

My time on the team honestly taught me more about leadership, teamwork, and dedication than anything I have participated in since that time. I am a lawyer and when I was interviewing for jobs I wondered about the creative, stereotypes associated with cheerleaders. In the end, I often found that it worked to my advantage when I could articulate why this experience, although plagued by stereotypes, was important in my life. Certainly you want to Should Uniforms Essay maximize your chances when applying to grad school/jobs, but I often think being honest about who you are actually helps you become a more attractive candidate. If being in a sorority or sport or whatever activity enhanced who you are as a person and creative, as a professional, dont be afraid to put it on your resume because you are afraid of judgmental people. This decision is going to be both regional, and in some circumstances cultural, because historically Black fraternities and sororities have different experiences in Uniforms Essay, this regard. The Alumni chapters of these organizations often are comprised of very active leaders in industry. For example, one of our past national presidents is a sitting member of creative, Congress etc So I caution looking at pink ghetto all organizations through the same lens. If you held a leadership role in a Jewish sorority or fraternity (or even student organization like Bnai Brith Youth Organization), I would say you should definitely include it. It could really open doors for you.

(This might not be true in the South? Cant say, only essay, ever lived on the coasts. Or I might just be succombing to stereotypes about the system definition, South. Essay? Who knows.) Not a hiring manager of any sort, so take this as you will, but if you can back up your position with substantive things you did, I dont necessarily see the harm in factory system definition, putting it on. Maybe not at the tippy-top, but more in creative essay, the interests section. I wasnt in a sorority in college, as I went to an all-girls high school and was kind of estrogened-out by the time I went to college (now that I think about it, very few women from my high school joined sororities at all).

I also have kind of the timing devices, same bias against them as others. But running a large organization on campus is essay a challenge, regardless if its the chess club or a huge sorority chapter. Especially if you ran extremely successful events, and you can talk about how your actions led to xx,xxx attendees, a % increase over past years. Should Schools Uniforms Be Manadatory?? If your GPA and test scores are high, then it would be obvious you didnt spend your time only going to essay sorority parties. Ive had my sorority affiliation on my resume for 5+ years, (just the name now, and factory system definition, I believe a colon and titles of chief leadership roles directly after graduation). I put it in Activities, along with other professional groups Im involved in. Ive never found it to my detriment, and in essay, fact have heard several recruiters and colleagues comment that they look for Uniforms Greek affiliations in creative, resumes, since it often connotates things like leadership, teamwork, commitment, etc. I agree with other commenters that if you expand, focus on on marriage, results of creative, what you accomplished there, budget you handled, like any other job. Did Blaise Pascal Invent? Also, tying Greek activities to community and involvement and creative essay, charity might be a way to get broader appeal, its harder to begrudge anyones efforts to save the pink ghetto, whales! We women are part of the problem if we view membership in any organization of women as something shameful we dont want to essay acknowledge or an pink ghetto, indication of being ditzy stereotypes. Wholeheartedly agree.

I made a similar comment in essay, response to someone else above. Im sorry, but this simply isnt true. An organization isnt a good thing simply because the membership is solely female. And its not a bad thing, either. Why would you view membership in a sorority (an organization of women) as shameful, in general?

Putting aside real information about a specific sorority, of course. Because its a social organization that you have to pay money to join? As a default, of coursethere are exceptions (scholarships, actual-philanthropy-focused-greeks-orgs instead of the BS dance marathon for charity whatever once a semester). Some of us non-Greeks think males and Should be Manadatory?, females who were Greeks are vapid. Its not a gender thing. Exactly. It tells me something about your priorities. Creative Essay? (For a clue as to what that something is, please see the shakespeare on marriage, comment above claiming membership in Greek life demonstrates the important ability to essay balance work and social activities.) It makes me very frustrated that many of you seem to think all sororities are the Should Schools Uniforms be Manadatory?, same. Open up your mind just a tiny bit the essay, stereotype you have in mind just is Should Schools Uniforms Essay not applicable to essay every sorority chapter out there. To Be Online: Of The Little? In college, one of my priorities was my sorority where I led 150 women in weekly meetings, planned and and executed an creative, elaborate public relations plan, 2-day retreat and 4-day recruitment, headed several committees where I had to manage conflicting personalities, raised tens of thousands of dollars for charity and had a damn good time doing it, while maintaining a high GPA and pursuing several other extra-curriculars. What Pascal Invent? Id say my priorities were well-placed.

What exactly does membership in essay, a sorority tell me about system, someones priorities? Does that mean any sorority-girl-applicant must have a 4.0 and a 180, otherwise she had misplaced priorities and she should have been studying instead of (doing whatever you do in a sorority)? Please. We all have free time in college and I dont care how you spent yours. If your sorority experience was just about essay, socialization, then why would you bring it up? But if you planned a $50,000 fundraiser for charity, then by To Be Or Not To Be The Tale Big Bad Little all means, tell me about it and I dont really care if you did it through your greek affiliation, your volunteer work with the essay, Red Cross, your religious affiliation, etcleadership is leadership. My priorities were securing my 4.0 double-major GPA, my Rhodes scholarship finalist status, my admission to a top-5 law school, and my presidency of a major campus community service organization. The sorority came after that, but there was room on my resume for it when I was newly out of pink ghetto, school. Of course, at my college, sorority women had a significantly higher GPA than non-sorority women. Gosh, what a bunch of empty-headed girls we were! 1) Great name choice!

2) Wholeheartedly agree. There was an creative essay, earlier commenter that said to include it but to make sure and not act ditzy during the interview. I would certainly hope that *any* Corporette would be conscientious enough to Schools Essay not be ditzy in an interview, regardless of whether she was in a sorority or not. The underlying premise that just because some of us chose to spend time in a Greek organization during college, ipso facto we need to creative try harder to on marriage not be ditzy is very regressive. I thought the above comment about interview ditzy-ness was practical advice NOT necessarily saying that sorority members need to creative try harder not to be ditzy telling the OP to include the Greek info after considering how she generally comes off in an interview. If OP has a naturally bubbly demeanor, it might (consciously or subconsiously) reinforce a stereotype about sorority members, unfortunately. Factory System Definition? If OP doesnt have that tendency, she doesnt have to be as worried about creative, being stereotyped. similarly, I am hyper-aware of not being taken seriously because I have a high voice and Or Not The Tale Of The Big Bad The Three Little Businesses, look young, so I try to do things to prevent potential stereotyping. With respect, I dont really think the question here has to essay do with membership in an all-women organization per timing devices se. I think it is more to do with the stereotypes (whether correct or incorrect) associated specifically with frats/sororities.

There are plenty of other single-gender organizations that dont have those stereotypes, e.g. Girl Scouting/Girl Guiding, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, etc. Well stated. I have a friend who refused to creative screen a make graduate from Duke because he was on a sport there (NOT lacrosse). I thought it was ridiculous, but it was her call (I dont work with her). She had decided all male athletes from Duke were probably sex offenders.

Wow. I mean.*wow*. Thats just odd. Yea I went to Duke during the lacrosse thing, and Should be Manadatory? Essay, our grads keep doing stupid things (the girl with the essay, powerpoint slide ranking all the guys shed had sex with, eg). Dealing with those stereotypes are so much fun. . This.

I have the same reaction to Should Schools be Manadatory? guys in fraternities. Its not the essay, gender. Its the pink ghetto, organization. I dont think this is a gender thing, its a Greek thing. The (very few) Greek organizations in my area are mostly co-ed, and creative essay, I still have an factory, automatic negative reaction to them.

I hope I wouldnt let that reaction cloud my judgement, but seeing as this is a board where people recommend making sure you dont wear a loud print or have visible panty lines in case people judge you as incompetant for them, I dont think its out of line to point out that some people have negative views of Greek organizations, too. I held a leadership position in essay, my sorority and have never (and would never) list it on a resume. Timing Devices? In my view, its like religion, more likely to turn off some people in a strong way that really do much help. I was Greek at a Southern university, and essay, something like 60-65% of the women on campus were as well. I was also an engineer, and listed my affiliation on timing devices, my resume. I cannot tell you how much improved my interviews with other Greeks were (including several interviews in Boston and Albuquerque). Im of the opinion it cant hurt to list. Creative Essay? Anecdotally, having it listed helped me, but if it were to hurt me, Im not sure those are people Id really want to work with anyway. This is also a good point to a certain degree, anything you put on a resume that counts for anything will screen you out of certain jobs. If it is important to you, then dont worry that some people might think its stupid. You dont want to work with people who think your priorities are stupid.

If its not an timing devices, important part of essay, your life, you might leave off anything polarizing. Example, if you are trying to To Be Big Bad Web And decide whether to list something that shows a religious affiliation, it is probably worth it to list it if you really are deeply religious, you are vocal about it, and you might have certain days of the weeks or holidays in the year that are off limits from work. If some people dont want to interview you because you listed a religious affiliation, you probably dont want to creative essay work with them. But if you go to church twice a year, your religious affiliation isnt something you identify with, etcbut you have some religious affiliation you could list on your resume, its probably not worth doing so because it might be polarizing and Should be Manadatory? Essay, its not something you care enough about to creative essay give up on potential job leads. Based on did blaise pascal, the comments of some of the creative essay, people above, I am positive those people are not people Id like to work with or for. And if you can hold onto shakespeare, that high-minded ideal in this day and age and creative essay, still pay your rent and student loans without having to rely on Mommy and Should Schools, Daddy to pay them, more power to you. Ha! The high-minded ideal that you dont want to work with or for judgemental people? I have a great job, have not taken a dime from my parents in 10+ years and creative essay, absolutely love the people I work with and the environment I work in. Im a Partner in an acconting firm and pink ghetto, I interview many graduatesmy advice would be to include your leadership roles for example if you were Vice President Treasurer of a greek organization list the role and essay, the organization. On the other hand if you were a member and didnt hold a leadership role Id leave it off of your resume.

The intent is to show your leadership skills and experience. You dont need to pink ghetto show us your social/relationship building skills we can get a pretty good feel for that via the interview. In my experience the more extracurricular activities you managed to juggle in college (im including jobs in this category) the more prepared you are for a professional job. I was not affiliated with a sorority and creative, dont regret it. I live in a region where its not taken in the highest regard. Just so you know where Im coming from. If you held significant leadership roles that if not associated with the greek system would be appropriate on your resume, then by all means include them.

You shouldnt scratch them simply for being greek. I cant speak to law school, but the graduate programs Im familiar with (academic and professional) are definitely interested in leadership experience. Did Blaise? I think most people understand that sororities are a non-stop party for some, but are a significant leadership development and public service opportunity for others. However, I would definitely not condone listing an association to fill out an essay, empty resume or in a hope of eliciting generosity from pink ghetto, a fellow member. I have reviewed applications, and trying to convince me to accept you over other equally qualified applicants simply because you were a member of an organization (even if it was one in which I was also a member) is not going to work in your favor. I think you hit the nail on the head with: If you held significant leadership roles that if not associated with the greek system would be appropriate on your resume, then by all means include them. For the record, I was not involved in Greek life at a small midwestern school I think we had 2-3 sororities, and one was at least loosely affiliated with the drama department but I have no strong feelings against Greek life, just as I have no strong feelings against people my current age involved in philanthropic groups that exist mostly to plan and attend elaborate parties. I was in a sorority and it personally has not hurt me (I put my leadership role on my CV until I had more out of school experience).

Also speaking from a recruitment point of view having the work/ social balance can actually make a huge difference. It demonstrates that you are well rounded and can engage in different scenarios. I know of people who are very weary of taking the kid who only focused on academics because they feel like they may lack the personal skills that those who went out and essay, joined organizations (greek or not) gained. I find it very sad that there seem to be so many women responding to system this post who are so close-minded that they are incapable of getting past stereotypes. The ability to balance work with life and to lead people of diverse backgrounds are increasingly important in todays professional world so I think it would be a mistake to exclude college leadership experience and extracurricular activities from a resume . Creative? Intelligent and experienced recruiters are are capable of considering the skill set of an applicant without being intolerant based on stereotypes and I suspect the executives and owners of the best companies to system definition work for expect this from their recruiters. Because Greek life is known for creative essay being super tolerant. Thats my problem with including itit gives the impression that youre into pink ghetto drinking, hazing, and essay, treating people who arent in your inner circle like crap.

That may be an unfair stereotype of pink ghetto, Greek life, but its hardly a ridiculous impression to creative have of it. Agreed. Pascal? One of the essay, things that hasnt been made explicit in this thread is that sororities are inherently based on exclusion. Correct me if Im wrong, but I believe the membership is To Be The Tale Big Bad The Three Businesses built by creative essay looking for factory people who fit a particular mold and creative essay, who very much want to conform to that mold. One aspect of sorority life is sorting people by type. Timing Devices? As a second-generation American, very much a minority from a very middle-class family, who wasnt necessary schooled in the more esoteric ways of upper-middle-class mainstream America, I never felt that there was a sorority that would have me. I think it depends on the sorority and the school environment generally. That was definitely the essay, case at my school.

My cousin went to school in another part of the country and dropped out of her sorority because it wanted to be too exclusive. She found she preferred women who didnt necessarily fit her sororitys mold, and those women were always the ones pointed out as being undesirable by the rest of her sisters. Just because you dont agree with someones stereotypes doesnt mean that dont have them. As I mentioned earlier, I held a leadership position in my sorority and dont consider it resume material. System Definition? This whole thread demonstrates why thats the essay, right decisions, a lot of To Be To Be Online: Of The Web And Little Businesses, educated professionals have negative impressions of sororities thats what matters, not whether they are right to have those views. You will never know that you didnt get the interview or offer because you listed your sorority on your resume, nor will you get the chance to explain it, to maximize your job opportunities, you are better leaving it off.

If I interviewed you, Id want to see your sorority experience only if it involved being a leader, not just a member. And I dont think Id use the word sorority, Id use just the name of the organization. Example, Social Chair, Alpha Chi Omega, 2010-present. (other than the years above, thats what would have been on MY resume!) I know there is some anti-greek bias, but you might also run into someone like me who realizes how valuable the greek experience can be. 20+ years later I can look back on my own and see how it shaped me as an individual and essay, a leader in very positive ways. I would have some bias toward assuming it did the same for you. Also, be sure to list any leadership positions with regard to your organizations philanthropy.

I agree with this. FWIW- I was not in a sorority and timing devices, thought over a decade ago at age 19 they were for the girls and guys who needed to make a big school feel smaller. Now, I regret that I didnt do it, because I see it was an creative essay, opportunity to network and collaterate with others on philanthropic endeavors, and aspire for leadership positions at a young age. I was in a sorority in college and included my leadership role on my resume when I applied to law school. I believe I even kept it on there when I applied to law firms. To Be Or Not To Be Big Bad Web And The Three? While I dont think it particularly helped me get into school or get my current big law job, it didnt appear to essay have hurt me. I think the skills I gained having to develop and manage an annual budget and did blaise invent, handle the sororitys finances was an excellent experience and helped me develop a lot of skills (social, leadership, financial and otherwise) and wanted to reflect that on my resume. The only Greek letters Im impressed by are Phi Beta Kappa. Because this is on my resume (re: undergraduate degree), I had listed it to go on my law firm bio page as well, after checking that people were including things like cum laude or with honors after their listed degrees. The (2nd or 3rd year) associate responsible for editing and formatting the bios for creative the web site wrote me an email saying that he had dropped this from my bio because the pink ghetto, firms practice was to leave out sorority affiliations. I was speechless.

To Amy H. what a story! Wow. I hope PBK is on creative essay, your firm bio now. Holy wow. Thats sort of timing devices, stunning. Creative Essay? PBK was a huge deal at To Be Or Not To Be Of The Big Bad Web And The Three my undergrad, you had to creative be roughly top 2% to get into it (although that varied by major). Everybody who had the type of background that would eventually lead to becoming a lawyer knew what it was and shakespeare, aspired to it. Its a big deal everywhere. Creative Essay? Not every smart person is elected to what did blaise pascal PBK; you might have had a bad term, or taken some challenging classes that blew your GPA. But if you were PBK its universally recognized as an impressive achievement and is always listed. Thats hysterical.

Good Lord. Oh, and creative, although I know that people do use finalize, to put into final form is better. I wasnt very active in pink ghetto, my sorority in college. I pretty much did the minimum to not become in bad standing, but rushed solely to meet new people. I would never put my sorority on my resume. It was my stress reliever- not a responsibility! That being said, many of creative, my sisters who did hold leadership positions did have a lot of responsibility and demonstrated a lot of skills that employers value. They all put those positions on their resumes and are gainfully employed now. Maybe there may be some prejudice against sorority girls when applying for jobs, but I think it would be far worse to on marriage have a sparse resume.

You dont want it to seem like you coasted through undergrad. Id say keep it on your resume until you have some valuable work experience to creative take its place. On a related note, has anyone on shakespeare on marriage, this board read Alexandra Robbins Pledged? I was fascinated by creative it. But the Or Not Online: Of The Big Bad Web And The Three Businesses, stories definitely contributed to my dislike of the greek system. Although, as someone above posted, black sororities seem to creative be really impressive and on marriage, nurturing. Havent read it.

But from the creative essay, blurb on Amazon, it sounds like that particular sorority was awful. My experience couldnt have been further from it, although I wasnt *that* involved. If there were institutionalized eating disorders, I thankfully did not fall prey. The Panhellenic Council at my school was actually pretty organized and powerful, and devoted itself to lobbying the administration for such things as better womens healthcare, more women in tenure-track positions, and better free mental health resources for everyone. Actually, there were 4 different women in different sororities at different universities. Pink Ghetto? And if you look at the comments, many of the commenters said they were in sororities and felt the creative, book was very true-to-life. Im glad your experience was positive, but it sounds like the book captures the true story at many schools.

Ah, sorry. Reading skills. Pink Ghetto? I glossed and creative essay, thought the pascal invent, 4 women that helped her were in her own sorority. Makes much more sense the actual way. I read the book and found it to be interesting. It did highlight some key differences between sororities and I found out my school required the women to creative essay live in timing devices, the sorority house for three years. Creative? There was a really large division between the Greeks and the GDIs on timing devices, my campus and I think that really played a big role.

Living in a sorority house can be cost prohibitive and creative essay, I really saw a pretty big difference between the what did blaise invent, Greeks on my campus and those women I met who went to schools that couldnt have sorority houses at all or made them voluntary. As a black woman who did not belong to a sorority (my school did not have them), black sororities and fraternities seem the most idiotic of all. Lack of power, money, influence AND snobbery. Great combination! Um, how on earth would you know? Youve indicated that you werent a member, didnt have them on your campus to make any real determination with regard to their money, power, affluence or snobbery?

As a member of one of the large Black sororities, I can assure your there is plenty of all four of the above! Every organization has its positives and its negatives, but base your criticism in fact. I get that people are entitled to their own opinions about organizations, but Id put my chapter Sorors and both their achievements and community service up against any notion of creative essay, what it means to be in factory, a sorority. Essay? 90% of them fall soundly in what did blaise, the definition of a Corporette regardless of their chosen fields of medicine, law, business, education or the arts. Essay? And we are in amazing company, Dr Dorothy Height, Mary McCleod Bethune, Nikki Giovani, Sadie Alexander, Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, etc.. Ive met some of your less illustrious members. And yes, as you noted, I am entitled to my opinion. Im posting a comment, not writing an article. For people just out of college, who did hold leadership positions in shakespeare on marriage, the sorority (if all you did was go to parties and wear the t-shirts, no one cares), I think its fine. I absolutely do not give those women more consideration or think they are better than other applicants for being the Vice President of Kappa Kappa Gamma or whatever, but its totally OK with me that they have it on essay, their resume. It is something that they did in college, and with a new grad, I am interested in what they did in Should Uniforms be Manadatory? Essay, college.

Do not think for one second, however, that lots of extracurriculars or sorority leadership will distract me from a distinctive lack of creative, academic rigor in your courses or poor grade performance, because it wont. If its obvious from To Be Or Not Online: The Tale Web And The Three Businesses, your resume and creative essay, transcripts that you skated through college because you were more interested in partying than learning something, no leadership positions you put on your resume whether its for timing devices a sorority or the astronomy club will matter. BUT. Creative Essay? For anyone more than 5 or so years out of Uniforms, college, including your sorority affiliation on your resume is really, really pathetic. Five years out of college, no one cares. You should not still care. Creative? College is what pascal invent over. I would definitely think less of a non-new-grad candidate who included their sorority affiliation, or their sorority leadership role, on their resume at essay that point. For the record: I pledged (Chi Omega), got a bid, turned it down. Best decision I ever made, next to who I picked to marry.

I agree that if youre 5 of To Be Online: The Tale Of The Big Bad Web And Businesses, so years out of college and creative essay, your only involvement with your sorority was in college than including your sorority affiliation on your resume is pathetic. But a lot of international sororities have strong alumnae members who volunteer their time organizing leadership conferences, fundraising events, and providing mentorship for collegiate members just like members of Should Schools Uniforms, a Lions club or a Rotary club. Creative Essay? In those instances I think its not at all pathetic to list your affiliation on your resume under the volunteer section. Im an what pascal, alumnae member of creative, Alpha Phi and I thoroughly enjoy volunteering my time both as an pink ghetto, advisor to a collegiate chapter and as an essay, executive member of my alum chapter. I dont have my sorority affiliation listed on my resume because Greek Life is Should Schools Uniforms be Manadatory? Essay quite under the radar here in Canada and essay, all most people know is negative portrayals from the media. But I do mention it in Schools Uniforms be Manadatory?, interviews if it comes up in a valid way and only if I feel the interview is going well. I also proudly wear my pin on International Badge Day and my Red Dress pin every day in Heart Health Month (February), our philanthropy supports Womens heart health and cardiac care. Not the creative essay, OP on this one but sorry, that still all sounds kind of pathetic to me. If you brought up how involved you still are in your college sorority and timing devices, your alumni chapter in an interview, I would seriously think you did not have any kind of a real life, or alternatively, that you were choosing not to grow up and move past college. Creative? And I especially dont get the I still wear my pin on Badge Day thing.

You do understand that like Ann said, no one cares? Right? Assume two candidates with identical academic credentials. One is pascal Treasurer of the Recycling Club (the most boring group I can think of). The other is Treasurer of Alpha Beta Gamma Delta. Id be more interested in interviewing Recycling Club Person. Its probably not completely fair to post this, but Ive never forgotten this New York Times Modern Love column on a horrific experience a woman had with a sorority.

Its not all unfair stereotypes. Creative Essay? Some of it is reality. My Sorority Pledge? I Swore Off Sisterhood That is timing devices a horrible story. Essay? My little college was non-Greek (one of the things I was looking for shakespeare in a school and creative, very hard to timing devices find in the South), but we did have a womens service organization that had a pledge-week, held fundraisers, cost a whole lot of money to get into, and creative, supplied alcohol to underage students on our dry campus.

Meanwhile, the timing devices, rest of essay, us made friends on our own, volunteered on our own, had fun on To Be Little Businesses, our own- and all for free! My cousin was involved in her sorority during college, and they all loved her- until they started getting mad at her for missing meetings (scheduled while she was in creative essay, class) and not pulling her weight in shakespeare, planning things (while she was suffering repeated debilitating days-long migraines). Her sisters all knew what she was going through, and creative, instead of supporting her in trying to figure out what was going on Should Schools, with her health and get better, they asked her to leave. In comparison, my roommate broke her leg, and six of our friends with cars got together with me and creative essay, we put together a schedule of pink ghetto, who was going to creative essay drive her to timing devices classes, doctor, grocery store, and anywhere else she might have desired to go. My cousin spent three and a half years in that sorority, and creative essay, she doesnt talk to any of the women she knew from it. She doesnt even mention it, which must be horrible- it was a huge part of her life, and its like it didnt even happen. I guess having leadership experience is a good thing- but just as lawyers (and accountants!) can have bad reps because of something very few have done, the pink ghetto, same can go for Greeks. Yes, lawyers get a bad rep, which sometimes is creative essay deserved. But at least lawyers are generally believed to be smart, organized, and competent. Sororities, by contrast, are generally known for being snobbish and excluding and nasty, and that is pink ghetto not infrequently the reality, as you have pointed out. Gosh, all these nasty little stories about sororities are coming back to me.

A few years ago, I believe a sorority rejected a bunch of women who were deemed insufficiently attractive. (Thats really woman-empowering.) A doctors assistant told me about her niece who transferred from a Southern school because her sorority sisters had driven her out. Everyone to some extent has to deal with the generalizations made by creative strangers about their background. For example, if you went to a top Ivy, some people assume youre a clueless egghead, or a rich legacy, or an entitled jerk, or a person who thinks s/hes smarter than s/he really is what did blaise pascal invent . I think theres value to C in reading how some people might respond to her having been part of creative, a sorority. Now that Ive thought about To Be Or Not To Be Of The Big Bad Web And Little Businesses, it, Im not sure any law school would care. Law firms might be different. Time enough to creative essay worry about that.

I was in a sorority. And Im really ambivalent about the experience. My school had local (non-Greek) sororities and fraternities, so what I experienced was very likely different in many, many, many regards from what Greek sorority members experienced. Without a doubt, belonging to a sorority has had a hugely positive impact on timing devices, my life. I really met the friends of my life through my sorority; I gained tons of creative, leadership experience; I got to work with charities throughout undergrad; I met and on marriage, developed relationships with professional women well before I embarked on my job search; I continue to creative essay network with this small group of alumnae. I wholeheartedly agree with others here who say that being in a sorority was empowering and benefited their overall professional development. That was certainly my *individual* experience. But, I also think the *system* of sororities/fraternities has a lot of issues. While I found my sisters to be almost uniformly impressive and mostly feminist young women, I found the traditions of our sororities and fraternities often rooted in sexism, misogyny and super weird about special rights and privileges. For instance, many of my sororitys (which was originally founded as a literary club) traditional secret songs involved lines about involvement with guys in did blaise pascal invent, the fraternities. Yeah, it was silly fun, but its also just plain weird for a bunch of awesome women to be memorizing songs detailing mens attributes based upon their fraternity affiliations.

I know men had similar (and frankly debasing) songs about sororities. Add to this the traditions of stags with fraternities only essay, (though we did have a stag with one other sorority once), private parties where only members are invited (only contributing to divisions among classmates I had many friends outside of my sorority and always felt weird that I couldnt integrate them into this part of my life), and some other very strange pledging traditions (we did not haze, though I know other organizations at my school did): and Uniforms be Manadatory?, overall I have to conclude that as a whole, this system of creative essay, exclusive organizations as presently constructed are not good for undergraduate culture as a whole. System? Despite my mostly wonderful individual experience. In sum, just because I gained privilege from the system doesnt make the system right. or just. FWIW, I put my leadership experience in my sorority on my resume right out of undergrad, but I put it under other activities, next to my academic honor society memberships as opposed to being the editor-in-chief of the creative essay, college paper, which I placed under job experience. Timing Devices? Im five years out of creative, school now, and dont list the sorority at shakespeare all. id leave it off a resume (if you have other things to creative put on there), but if you have connections from your affiliation, work em. this chain just shows theres a lot of negative associations with the greek system, so why hurt yourself before you get in the door.

Remember this is shakespeare just grad school the OP is applying to. Its not a job where she should have more serious achievements on creative essay, her resume. Many grad schools both want and expect to see clubs, school involvement and school-life balance. Ive served on admissions committees (admittedly not at the Ivy League) and Or Not To Be Web And Little Businesses, an applicant without clubs (or a story) reads like that really unfortunate kid with no social skills who you dont want claiming your school as her alma mater. By the same token, law schools typically are interested in your intellectual and academic ability, and to some extent, your maturity.

Now of course, an applicant with a great LSAT score and GPA from essay, a good school is going to Should Schools Essay do fine, even when disclosing fraternity or sorority membership. Its the essay, borderline case in which this might matter. For very good reason, fraternities and sororities are not associated in timing devices, the popular mind with the essay, brightest, most diligent and meritocratic of shakespeare on marriage, students, the kinds of students that law schools supposedly like. How many movies have I seen in creative, which the fraternity bros get together to cheat on an exam after finishing a three-day bender? How many real accounts have I read about women being attacked or sexually used by fraternity guys, or about sorority women exhibiting vicious mean girl snobbery? It was a frat at Yale, DKE, that marched its pledges past the pink ghetto, womens center at night, screaming No means Yes. Essay? Yes means anal. Yup, if you act like an animal, chances are people are going to think youre not too bright. What Did Blaise Invent? Columbia had some kind of scandal involving a fraternity in the last couple of years. Those are just the ones Ive heard of.

Im confused. Essay? Since when do law schools require resumes? Not to defend the fraternities, but to clarify the situation only Should Schools be Manadatory? Essay, 10% of students at Columbia are in creative, fraternities. And the scandal was over drug-dealing. Thanks for the info. I didnt suggest that most students at Columbia were in Should Schools be Manadatory?, fraternities. Creative? Im sure very few Yalies are in frats as well. A scandal is what did blaise pascal a scandal.

I think drug dealing serious. These student-run housing situations are far more often the seat of essay, problems than the regular student residences. I dont understand why, according to on marriage many opinions stated on thread, all sorority members are guilty by association simply because other members of Greek houses, at other schools and in other parts of the country, have committed criminal behavior or displayed extremely poor judgment. I was a division 1 athlete. There have been many scandals in which division 1 athletes have raped women and engaged in creative, other criminal behavior.

One or two of these scandals even took place at pink ghetto my own school. Does that mean Im a rapist and creative essay, a criminal? Replace division 1 athlete with Greek house member and there you go. It makes no sense and reflects poorly on the commenters, not the sorority members. I dont think you can really compare Division 1 Athlete to factory system Greek House member. Division 1 Athletes qualify for that status based on merit and ability. Greek house members become members based on creative, more superficial qualities like appearance and similar background.

I think you completely missed the point of her comment. The point was that prejudice and stereotyping is Schools Uniforms Essay unacceptable. My personal experience with putting my Greek affiliation on my resume has always been very positive. I was the creative, president of pascal invent, my sorority at Harvard, which might help balance out the creative essay, ditz impression that seems to be a common fear. In any event, Ive discussed the experience (which was extremely valuable and formative for me) in almost all of my interviews, including the interviews for the law firm at which Im now an pink ghetto, associate. Creative Essay? When I was interviewing for what did blaise clerkships, I discussed the experience with a 9th Circuit judge who had held a similar leadership position during her experience in a sorority. She was enthusiastic about discussing the Greek system and its positive effects on her own life. Now that I am in the position of interviewing candidates at creative essay my firm, I enjoy talking about the Greek system as a point of commonality with candidates who list their own affiliation. I wouldnt necessarily just list membership in did blaise, a Greek organization on essay, your resume, but I think that the timing devices, leadership experience is valuable and the affiliation generally can at times be a good talking point. Creative? Just my own two cents. I was in a sorority (er, womens fraternity) in undergrad (small southern school, 75%+ Greek).

The time commitment is pretty large, even for regular members. Triple the amount of timing devices, meetings for women in the top leadership positions. I would never, ever have thought to put involvement in creative essay, a Greek organization on Should Schools Uniforms be Manadatory? Essay, my resume. Creative Essay? That being said, all of these comments have convinced me that it can be useful in certain cases. To Be Or Not To Be Online: The Tale Web And The Three? It certainly demonstrates reliability and leadership skills especially if she make a good case for how those skills will serve her in the workplace. I was a pretty terrible sorority member I was just too busy with school work to take any leadership positions. Mostly I learned to try to essay stay engaged in seemingly interminable meetings, while unsuccessfully keeping my mind off of the 1 million other things that I had to get done. Pink Ghetto? Hey, great practice for the working world! That being said, I probably would drop it off the resume by 10+ years after graduation. By then, you have relevant professional experience. Creative? I do have my affiliation listed on LinkedIn for networking purposes, but I do not have it on my resume.

Didnt OP say she was applying to To Be The Tale Web And Little law SCHOOL? Not a job. Creative? I remember putting like every significant extracurricular etc. down in my law school applications. I dont think admissions people at Uniforms law school are going to hold any particular affiliation against anyone, even if its not one they would choose themselves. When it comes to creative a resume for timing devices a job, I just dont think its that big a deal.

Sure some people hate sororities. Im one. Creative? My college didnt have them and in my snotty youth days, I turned up my nose at people I knew at Should Schools be Manadatory? schools that had them. (Im not from the south.) Has nothing to do with whether they are a womens organization, I thought they were about conformity and pleasing men. But good grief, I would never be so small minded as to reject a job applicant out of creative, hand because I saw a sorority mentioned in context of timing devices, leadership skills on her resume. Everyone is a complete package, and creative essay, no job applicant is exactly like me in shakespeare, all respects. Dont put it on. I was in creative essay, one for a bit. Timing Devices? Am 34 now. Essay? Would think it weird to timing devices put it on grad school app. NEver occurred to me to list it for a professional setting situation.

Its social. Creative Essay? Consider taking on a non-greek leadership role or activity soon. I was amused by factory system definition a comment below that sorority girls are just soooo superficial, focusing on essay, hair, makeup and clothing for rush or other events. Yes, I can see why such interests are problematic. Certainly no one would ever join a community of like-minded women to timing devices discuss these things. Essay? @@

Im also amazed how provincial some northeasterners are. Thinking that sororities are only Should Schools Uniforms be Manadatory? Essay, ditzy MRS seekers reflects poorly on you and says that you have very little awareness, knowledge or openness to essay anything outside NYC. Timing Devices? Its not flattering. Youre not doing yourself any favors with this post either, sweetie. :) Theres more to the Northeast than NYC. Yes, Im aware. Im originally from the Northeast myself. But, I guess some people think Legally Blonde and Animal House were documentaries instead of comedies. I went to school in creative essay, the Midwest, my cousin went in the Southeast and both of us found sororities at our schools that had those traits. There were only one or two sororities that really seemed to attract the more intellectual women at pink ghetto my school, and that was well known.

My mom was in a sorority and she still is delighted when she meets other ladies from the essay, same group. Its like a much smaller version of an alumni connection if I interviewed two people and Or Not Of The Web And The Three Little, one went to my alma mater, I might be more likely to connect with that person. Doesnt mean Id automatically choose or disqualify on that though. On another note, interviewers who refuse to interview you based on essay, a group you were in in college (as long as it wasnt, like, the KKK) seem like they do a diservice to their organizations. I like diversity in my workplace, and sorority ladies can fit in as well as skiiers, bakers, bird-watchers, socialists, a cappella singers, or whatever other club you were in in college! (disclosure: I was in timing devices, an a cappella group in college that took up about essay, as much time as a sorority, and probably threw as many parties. I still have it on my resume because its a good conversation starter.)

I have a different view on this than I have seen in Online: The Tale Web And Businesses, reading through the creative essay, responses. First, there are SO MANY THINGS that a person can judge you by on your resume and sorority affiliation is only one of them. Political affiliation, certain charity organizations that indicate a religious preference (even something like United Way can indicate certain preferences). What Did Blaise Pascal Invent? The truth of the matter is, even in creative essay, this economy, there comes a point when you have to let those things go. Shakespeare? Of course that is not to say that you shouldnt try to present yourself in creative, the best light possible, but at a certain point, some things are going to timing devices be obvious. However, Sorority Affiliation (as indicated on this thread) can be polarizing. Here is my view: Only put down sorority affiliation if you were the president or vice president of your sorority or panhellenic council. I think what you want to avoid is something that a non-sorority person wont understand. Essay? Putting that you were T-Shirt Chair might indicate to a fellow recent sorority grad that you could responsibly handle a large budget, communicate between vendors and your committee, etc. However, a non-sorority person doesnt understand that and may think it sounds silly. As for sports teams I say go for pascal invent it.

However, unless you are on creative, the actual school team put it under hobbies. My sister was a division 1 athlete through college and it is a huge time commitment. It shows excellent time management skills. As a lawyer and pink ghetto, a member of a sorority, I disagree. I think sorority affiliations are important to an individuals personal and professional develeopment. I also held just about every leadership position in my sorority and I included on my resume when starting out. Essay? My sorority involvement taught me critical time management skills, people management skills, and workplace etiquette development. In fact, Ive recently noted SIGNIFICANT disparaties between unprepared non-Greek applicants and Greek applicants and will almost always favor the Greek candidate (if it was not just a party group), because I know how sororities develop character. As with anything on shakespeare on marriage, a resume, I would only include those activities in which a person is involved and essay, active, not just present. If you include on your resume, be prepared to tell the interviewer how Greek life prepared you for the working world-see above re: time management, deication to Should a project, learning to work well with others, developing leadership skills, etc. Any number of essay, non-Greek extracurricular activities will teach the skills youve mentioned, for example, working for the school newspaper, managing a school musical group, running the school radio or TV station, running a student business, performing work/study jobs.

Moreover, admission and promotion usually are based on talent and commitment. I think there is a big difference between (1) using Greek affiliation to network and (2) putting Greek affiliation on your resume and thinking it will help you get into pascal invent grad school or land a job. Taking advantage of personal networks through Greek orgs make sense to me, but I have a hard time believing I would hire a candidate or admit a student b/c of Greek affiliation. Definitely. A lot of people here seem to be mixing them up. Essay? The question is not whether one should join sorority and if that could be a good career move down the road (I think it can be) the question is whether one should put that experience on her resume. Different question. I think Reader C should absolutely put it on her resume. Timing Devices? I was involved for 4 years in creative essay, college in Greek Life and as a result was able to Should Uniforms be Manadatory? Essay use it on creative, my resume for leadership experience, community involvement, volunteer work, honor societies, and general campus participation. And, without knowing it, I was hired for my finance internship and pink ghetto, my first job by fellow Greek Life members without even knowing. Essay? Though the alumnae group in my city, if I needed additional networking resources for finding new jobs or recommendations, I guarantee that that would be the first place I would look.

Yes, there are always people that are going to sneer at someones list of involvements, whether youre in what did blaise pascal invent, a religious organization, the Sierra Club, or whatnot, but no one has the perfect resume coming out of creative essay, college and entering the workforce/graduate community. dont go to pink ghetto law school. I just read this entire comment thread, and frankly I am shocked at the judgment and lack of support being offered to essay other women who may have happened to be in a sorority at one time. This is certainly the timing devices, most vitriol that I have ever seen on this site. On at least a weekly basis, there is clothing linked to by posters that I wouldnt be caught dead in, but Id never post a comment to that effect or use the creative, fact that you want to purchase a god-awful purse to on marriage form a judgment on who you are (and more importantly, what kind of employee you are).

Life is hard enough as a professional woman, especially for those who are just beginning their careers, without us ripping each other down. OP, just put it on your resume. If you are competent in other areas that are important for your field, youll be fine. In fact, it may be a bonus if leadership is something you have a passion for and want to continue pursuing throughout your education and career. If you get rejected because you were in a sorority, I wouldnt be upset about not going to school there. And even though the economy in the toilet, I still think there is essay something to be said for being true to pink ghetto yourself. As someone from creative, outside of the US, everything I know about sororities I learned from Legally Blonde the Sweet Valley twins. It gives off a very negative connotation to associate yourself with one. Greek means something other than someone from Greece? You learn something every day. I learned many amazing lessons being president of be Manadatory? Essay, my sorority.

It can be a leadership experience no reason not to creative essay list it as such. I was president of my sorority chapter. I was also the greek-wide community service/philanthropy chair for Panhellenic. Or Not Online: Of The Big Bad Web And? Both of these positions required a huge amount of work, and both were on my resume when I applied for law school and for summer associate positions. That was in the good ol days of BigLaw hiring, but I think I would do the same today. I interview now and leadership is important to creative me. Should Schools Uniforms Essay? In fact, by essay the time Im interviewing during callbacks, the minimum academic requirement hurdles have already been met, so its actually all about fit and leadership is a big piece of Should Schools Uniforms be Manadatory?, whether youre going to essay fit. I went straight from undergrad to law school, so my undergrad activities were needed on my resume. If I were applying for a lateral or in-house position now, I probably would not include my greek affiliation.

I think the type of experience as an officer in a greek organization can be relevant; such as Treasurer or VP Finance or some similar title, and responsible for a budget, A/P and A/R, contracts, insurance, payroll, etc. A large chapter (400 women) of a sorority with a physical house to live in can have a budget of over what did blaise, a million dollars. Additionally, during an essay, interview process, a Greek affiliation can be the common point of interest that sparks conversation and creates a memory that helps you stand out from the other top tier, high GPA candidates. Completely disagree. If you held a position in your sorority and it is something you are proud of, put it on your resume. I am a current masters student and timing devices, was president of my sorority. I have had plenty of internship interviews and they are always happy to see that I had a leadership role within my sorority. If you didnt do anything within your sorority then I dont see a real reason to put anything. I got around this question by detailing what I did while holding an office in essay, my sorority (coordinating major events, overseeing committees, writing newsletters, establishing a database of alumnae).

I dont think focusing on your experiences significant to your chosen career path would be a detriment. Also. . . I know several lovely and talented sorority girls who are now lovely, talented, and successful lawyers and businesswomen. Ultimately, include it or dont. . . just dont loose sleep over it. I think if worded correctly and presented in a manner where one would take you seriously then yes, being able to say I was in an extra curriculative community service driven group managed a full work load of 15, 17 or even 21 hrs is very valuable. What alot of you non Panhellanic people do not understand is that the traditional judgmental outlook on greeks back in the day and what you see from timing devices, Hollywood, is creative essay all wrong. In order to even make it into a sorority you must have a certain GPA some chapters require higher ones then others. You must be able to maintain your GPA in order to be able to system stay in Greek life. Greek life is not all social activities, the meetings every week are legit, bilaws are read and minutes are kept just like business meetings in the work force.

Ive been in a few corporate meetings to tell you that is true. Being able to show that you can get along with people and creative essay, that you work well as a team is timing devices a huge bonus when looking for a well rounded employee. No one wants to essay hire someone who puts out pink ghetto bad PR. To me, the leadership shown in Greek life such as, being over the financials for that schools chapter or being the president of that chapter is the same if not better then managing 5 10 people at a fast-food restaurant. Creative? I dont understand why a schools faculty would hate sororities when they are the very ones who are mostly involved with SAA student alumni association. They are the Should be Manadatory?, ones who put the spirit into school spirit. They support their college by volunteering when the school needs help taking money at the table at a basketball game, or needs extra help in the concession stand at football games. A lot of the work they do is behind the scenes but they really try hard to keep what they fell in love with at the school, alive. OMG OMG OMG. You are also a wildcat.

Im gonna be a sophomore in a week :p. I was searching for pumps for upcoming school events and probably future interviews, so I found your website Then I couldnt stop reading your articles. They are really helpful and insightful in creative, many ways. Anyways, thanks for sharing! :D :D :D. And Im also a GDI now but considering to rush some business frat this year

Behind the Scenes: Edgar Martins Speaks. Edgar Martins is a photographer whose picture essay in essay, The Times Magazine on July 5 and an accompanying slide show on, Ruins of the Second Gilded Age, were found to include digital alterations contrary to the stipulations of his contract and his stated, repeated assertions to the writer, editors and fact checker at the magazine. On Marriage! This week, Mr. Martins released an essay, How Can I See What I See, Until I Know What I Know? It constitutes his response to the controversy that has arisen. He also annotated five photographs from the Ruins series, which encompasses more work than appeared in The Times. (Of those seen here, only the picture from Greenwich, Conn., was published.) In the quoted descriptions below, Mr. Martins discusses publicly and more specifically than he has before some methods he used and why he employed them.

Much has been written about this image. My intention was to mirror the creative essay, right-hand side of the room on the left-hand side, thus creating two opposing doorways. Joining the two sides also meant correcting the perspective. The leaves and what did blaise invent ground were photographed as they were found, though the symmetry was also repeated in two small parallel sections of the essay, floor. What Pascal Invent! Contrary to speculation no gaps in the floor were filled in. It was brought to my attention that some viewers questioned whether the leaves would normally be found this way. This line of questioning is entirely valid. Where does one draw a line when seeking to represent but also shape reality?

And how does the viewer relate to this? The only essay constructions which were conceived in timing devices, the context of this project were made at a representational level only. It is not reality which I have sought to manipulate, but its image. This work explores the concept of home as an idea and a form, and summons a disquieting conjunction of reality, hyper-reality, fantasy and fiction. This panoramic photograph was conceived by mirroring the same image and making subtle digital alterations. Creative! As with most of the visual hyperbolic statements which pervade my work, the symmetry is did blaise pascal, not subtle in essay, its psychological nuances.

My overall intention was to replicate another image which I took of this house, where the sunset was reflected on one of the top windows only. This photograph was conceived by making use of what did blaise pascal invent, multiple flashes. The digitally constructed photos have an important role in the project. These houses are also a psychological interior. Similarly to the photograph of a wooden house interior, shot on the outskirts of Phoenix, which sparked the current debate, I presented other mirrored interiors. The structural and cosmetic properties of creative, this image are strikingly symmetrical.

It explores an imaginary sense of wholeness to the experience of a fragmentary reality. The constructions in this image are restricted to some of the pipe work in the ceiling as well as the objects in pink ghetto, the foreground, which were simply increased in number and, of course, in creative, some cases mirrored. My starting point for this construction was a simple statement which I once read (and which does not necessarily reflect my personal views): Only a bad architect relies on symmetry; instead of system definition, symmetrical layout of blocks, masses and structures, Modernist architecture relies on wings and balance of essay, masses. My intention was to draw on references from Modernist art, thus also alluding to the wider concerns in my work, particularly with respect to the impact of Modernism on the environment. The left-hand side of the image was mirrored on the right-hand side. Paradoxically, the original image was almost identical to timing devices this photograph, the only difference being the shadow on the ground, which wasnt as pronounced.

My objective was to highlight the V shape on the ground. It occurred to me whilst producing this project that many of the essay, developments which I had visited had single letters or various coded signs spread throughout them. These would often be painted on Or Not Of The Big Bad The Three Little the doors of abandoned residential developments, on creative the outside perimeter fences of commercial complexes or, in this case, on shakespeare on marriage the bare walls of the creative, building. It reminded me of terminology and markings which were used on the house fronts in the aftermath of Katrina. I was therefore contemplating if the reference to such symbols might resonate with the viewer at a subconscious level.

The symbol V is more traditionally associated with Victory but also Versus. Following this train of thought, we could also associate it with Volt or Velocity (these being elevator shafts). The symbol V, in itself, can also be understood as an acronym for symmetry. I have always sought to what invent explore multi-layered images. Essay! In my view, this is one of the ways in which photography can overcome the single frames limitations. Symmetry, in my work, also alludes to a level of understanding beyond the did blaise, obvious and the symbolic. It has something to creative do with Barthess third meaning, something which disturbs language and meaning itself. Comments are no longer being accepted. Why wasnt this note place with the article? I understand why Mr.

Martins altered the shakespeare, photographs. Creative Essay! However, I wonder if this undermines the did blaise pascal, intent of creative, his photo-essay and whether he violated his contract with the Times.. These long winded, in-depth explanations of his work do more to confuse than explain what his pictures are all about. Should Schools! To the casual viewer who enjoys looking at photographic imagery, they mean nothing. I am now bored by his work after trying to essay wade through all that.

He just doesnt get it. How can we trust what you show, when you dont do what you say? How can we trust what you show, when we cant trust what you say? Actually, you can also mirror that for symmetry- how can we trust what you say, when we cant trust what you show? Wow. I agree with John above. This gibberish gives me a headache. As a photographer, I feel like I have a keen sense of smell when it comes to the stink of a guy whos just been caught in the act of Should Schools, lying about his work. If I recall correctly, in the original post, it was specifically mentioned that nothing had been digitally manipulated in these photographs. So, seems like what happened is clear.. he lied about his shots, he got caught, and now hes using ridiculous and unclear verbosity to creative try to weasel his way out of criticism.

Im all for Or Not To Be Big Bad Web And The Three the pursuit of art and truth and beauty, however it is achieved. I also think, however, that theres a level of creative, trust that society places in artists, which should be respected by the artist themselves. This is just annoying. Lets move on to some other good photography. This seems like much to do over some fairly mediocre photography in timing devices, the first place. As others have said, Martins images cannot stand on their own, so he must now defend them with nothing but convoluted writings. If Martins were selling fine art, he can manipulate all he wants, but a photo essay to the Times? Really? Hes clearly a liar.

He said the photos wouldnt be altered and yet they were altered. Ive lost interest in him completely. Essay! Hes a complete fraud. Well over 2,000 words, but not one of apology. I trudged through that essay twice and Uniforms be Manadatory? it conveyed little more than I know you people have these little rules and all, but heres why they dont apply to me and why I didnt need to tell you had no intention of adhering to them. If photojournalism as its currently practiced is just too confining for you and essay your meta-photographs, couldnt you have just declined the Or Not To Be The Tale Businesses, assignment? Omigod, this is genius. I find myself hoping there are language issues but suspecting hes using that as a cloak. I mean, just look at what hes doing here: Moreover, I have always resorted to digital technology to restore or repair images. Essay! Those who have truly looked at pink ghetto my photographs, especially the larger, darker, 3m works, will know that they are dust or scratch free, a condition, which is unattainable in analogue Photography.

This implies some kind of essay, mediation. *falls out of system, chair laughing* Translation: I know Ive clearly asserted over creative, and over timing devices, again that I dont use digital manipulation on creative my photos but come on! What kind of moron are you? Just look at them; its totally obvious Im always digitally manipulating my photos. You cant get that kind of effect in real life! Youre so stupid! *wipes tears of laughter from eyes*

This doesnt even work as a joke on his critics; its way too predictable. If theres any justice in Essay, the world, this man will soon have a fork in his butt because his career as a photographer is now over. I dont believe Mr. Martins explanations are valid. At the end of the creative essay, day, he digitally altered photographs, thus deceiving the viewers perception of reality. The NY Times Magazine is a journalistic publication, meaning its photographers should be held to journalistic standards. Readers trust that the images they see are an shakespeare on marriage accurate portrayal of reality, not photoshopped symmetry. He should be fired. Period. I cant believe you provided a forum for this guy to justify his lie. neither the annotations here nor the linked response essay even try to answer the creative essay, basic question: does mr martins contest the information at the top of factory system, this blog post that he stated to various representatives of the nytimes, repeatedly, that no digital manipulations to the images were made?

if he wishes to maintain that he did not say any such thing, then perhaps there is a case to be made for artistic license, though unfortunately his statement is appallingly poorly written and makes a mockery of the creative, notions he apparently intended to invoke. but if, as seems likely, he lied to the people he was working with, then his evasive, pleonastic posturing has absolutely no relevance whatsoever. so, mr martins, which is it? why wont you simply state one way or another whether you said to the times that these photos were made without digital manipulation? To believe that the photograph is, in anyway, an definition objective record of reality is to fundamentally miss the essay, fact that every photograph has been manipulated. Yes, EVERY photograph. How the photographer frames the image is a manipulation of the reality, when to Should be Manadatory? press the creative essay, shutter is manipulation of the time that the photograph was taken, to develop and To Be Or Not To Be The Tale Of The Big Bad Web And The Three Little print in a darkroom is to manipulate the negative. To decide how light or dark to print is essay, a manipulation of the image. To clone out, spot an image, to adjust levels, curves, contrast, sharpening, cropping, are all manipulating images and yet, as a teacher of photography, I dont see any of these as a bad thing because photography is about expressing something the photographer wants to what pascal convey. Im not sure if Mr Martins has made things any clearer. The one thing that is important, is that the images are beautiful in their symmetry, convey a clear sense of the passing of time and creative the passing of the what did blaise invent, people who lived there.

Perhaps, as readers of the NYT we are expecting photography to throw light on the world around us in a newsworthy way: Mr Martins throws light on feeling and creative emotion through these images. Perhaps, that is invent, why he is also an creative essay art-photographer and shakespeare on marriage not just a journalist. His career as a photographer is far from over, but work for the NYT may be different in future. It is creative, reassuring to read all these posts about lying, cover-up and the loss of timing devices, confidence in images and their authors reflected in ALL the comments to creative essay thesephony architectural photographs by Edgar Martins. I was loosing confidence in the publics awareness of reality in publishing, or the timing devices, lack of concern about not publishing reality, but this reaffirms my trust in the viewers attention to details and respect for essay the reality that the timing devices, camera shows, and that publishers insist on. Better to have stayed silent chum If the creative essay, work is an Should Schools Essay illustration or constructed art then it should be stated from the get go, why be a rebel after the fact? I do like the essay, work and nice to see a few of the original images, but a room with two thermostats? interesting. OK, he explains why he uses digital manipulation. But that was not the question.

The question is: WHY DOES HE LIE ABOUT IT? My question: Why is To Be Or Not Online: Of The Web And Little Businesses, The Times presenting the creative essay, story this way? Would the Times write a headline: Gov Sanford Speaks, if someone else had been clearly caught lying? Why not a more investigative, proper, truthful headline above? Could it be because The Times picture editors got caught with their pants down too? We are talking Photoshop 101 here the basic selection and flipping of one-half of the image and mere amateurs on the web discovered the fakery from a mile away. Martins didnt even attempt to cover his tracks very much. I would like to read a much more thorough explanation about The Times retouching policy for The Magazine, (their policy is clearly stated for the main newspaper, but not The Magazine). It seems very obvious that other photographers retouch their photographs for the editorial section of timing devices, The Magazine, ie Raymond Meier, Erwin Olaf, etc. How can it be OK for some photographers, but not others? Why not label these retouched images as Photo Illustrations?

Any why not a more investigative approach, explaining how the Martins thing came down? Did he sign a contract stating no retouching? Are there lawyers involved? Isnt he the photo version of Jayson Blair? If so, why not a story explaining what happened, and creative how itll be prevented in what, the future? I love The Times, but with egg on your face, there is some explaining to do.

To me, theres an appearance of just trying to sweep this whole thing under the rug, and blame everything on Martins. I dont know whats more shameful: that the NYT would give Martins a forum to defend himself after being caught red-handed violating professional codes of ethics (and lying about it) or that he would take this opportunity to self-aggrandize instead of creative essay, apologizing. Seek help, Martins. This should have been short and simple and contrite; instead it was none of these. I read Mr. Martins comments with great interest. I was especially moved by his riff on the multiple meanings of the letter V. As my eyes rolled upward, I saw a giant B in To Be Or Not Online: The Three Little, the sky followed by a small u..well you get the picture. So what hes trying to say

Much has been written about this debate. My intention was to creative essay mirror the pink ghetto, right-brain side of the debate on the left-hand side, thus creating two opposing positions. Creative! Joining the two sides also meant obfuscating the perspective. The subtexts and on marriage inferences were simply repeated as they were found, and the cognitive dissonance was inherent throughout parallel sections of my argument. Contrary to anticipation, no gaps in essay, my reasoning were filled in. He couldnt have explained himself better if hed taken a picture of it. With how many out of work photojournalist there are I hope this man never gets a job for what invent any lagitamate publication ever again. Creative! He knew exactly what he was doing and he knows the ethics rules I hope he doesnt get a cent from the NYTimes. Im disgusted that he even has the sense to shakespeare on marriage try and justify his actions. I hope I speak for other photojournalists every where when I say SHAME ON YOU EDGAR MARTIN. To believe that the photograph is, in creative, anyway, an objective record of reality is to fundamentally miss the timing devices, fact that every photograph has been manipulated Perhaps, that is creative essay, why he is also an art-photographer and not just a journalist

True, but he has made a career out of lying about his art as well, stating time and time again that his images are done without digital manipulation. Search for timing devices him on Amazon, and his Topologies book still makes this claim, although it has now been removed from the publishers page. I really havent seen many people claiming that the manipulation was in itself wrong. What Martins did wrong is creative essay, one of the most base, unethical, and immoral things: he lied for money. Teachers Who Have Stopped Assigning Homework. Share this article. Creative Essay. Teachers Who Have Stopped Assigning Homework. Timing Devices. Is it really possible to completely eliminate homework or at least to assign it rarely, only when it#8217;s truly needed even in creative essay high school? We keep hearing from educators who say it#8217;s not only possible but preferable to do so.

Some of these folks were influenced by the arguments and timing devices data contained in The Homework Myth , while others came to creative essay realize on definition their own that it simply isn#8217;t necessary to make students work a #8220;second shift#8221; after a full day in creative school. Should Schools Uniforms Be Manadatory?. One example, whose comments are included in the book, is Phil Lyons, a high school social studies teacher. He noticed that homework contributes to a situation where students see learning as just an unpleasant means to essay an end #8220;a way to accrue points.#8221; Homework typically consists of tasks that are #8220;time-consuming, dreary, uninspiring and serve only to kill whatever motivation remains in students,#8221; Lyons says. Interestingly, he confesses having assigned a lot of homework at To Be The Tale Big Bad The Three Little the beginning of his career #8220;as a crutch, to compensate for creative, poor lessons. . On Marriage. . . But as I mastered the creative, material, homework ceased to be necessary.#8221; And so he assigned less and less of shakespeare on marriage, it as the years went by. Today he assigns none at creative all, even to Essay his A.P. classes. #8220;In addition to creative reinforcement type worksheets which I do not assign for homework I also do not assign reading to be done at home,#8221; says Lyons. #8220;Instead, I begin each day with an article (1-2 pages tops) that relates to the topics we#8217;re studying. Using just ten minutes a day, students end up reading over 100 college-level articles in the course of the year. Using class time enables us to go over the information collectively and immediately.#8221; And the result? #8220;Each year my students have performed better on the [A.P.] test#8230;.I would feel justified encroaching on pink ghetto students#8217; free time and I#8217;d be willing to do the creative, grading if I saw tangible returns, but with no quantifiable benefit it makes no sense to impose [homework] on them or me.#8221; However, Lyons did notice one clear difference after eliminating homework: #8220;Students come in all the time and hand me articles about something we talked about in class or tell me about a news report they saw. When intrigued by a good lesson and system definition given freedom [from homework], they naturally seek out more knowledge.#8221; Academically speaking, then, the absence of homework #8212; even in a high-level high school course #8212; created absolutely no problems.

Intellectually speaking, it has been positively beneficial. Yet, Lyons observes, the prospect of questioning homework leads some people to react in much the creative essay, same way that creationists do #8220;when you try to explain evolution to them.Despite all the logical arguments, they refuse to believe less homework can lead to more and better learning.#8221; But he quickly adds that, even in timing devices the sorts of communities where high school is regarded mostly as a source of credentials for the purpose of admission to selective colleges, people can be successfully invited to reconsider their assumptions: I#8217;ve encountered a lot of hostility from parents who think their children are being shortchanged because they came home and said they didn#8217;t get any homework. But after I explain, most turn quite friendly and creative supportive of the To Be To Be Online: Web And Little, policy. Adults freely admit that they can#8217;t remember anything about the election of 1876 from their high school U.S. History class, and that other skills and experiences were more important. Once I explain that those important skills and essay experiences are better served without repetitive homework assignments, they usually concur. Testimony from other teachers has been rolling in since The Homework Myth #8216;s publication. Timing Devices. To wit: #8220;For the past month of the final term I assigned no outside homework. I teach English, so all reading and writing was done in creative class. I had to plan more carefully and navigate those times when the Should Essay, quicker readers or writers finished earlier.

There are many positives that resulted. Essay. The kids were better rested, more interested in shakespeare on marriage what we were doing in class, and the quality of the work they did in class was better. I thought I might have some parent calls, but the creative essay, only feedback I got was a few parental remarks that they were glad to see their kids not so stressed. [The students#8217; written] reflections convinced me that homework has a long-term detrimental impact on definition student learning. More importantly it seems to harm them in creative other ways, emotionally, developmentally, socially, etc. I regret not having done this earlier in the year. I plan to To Be Or Not To Be Online: The Tale go homework-free next year in all my classes except AP Literature.#8221; #8212; Jim Drier, English teacher, Mundelein (IL) High School. Creative. #8220;I#8217;ve assigned homework once this semester. Of The Big Bad Web And Little Businesses. That was Geometry. In Algebra, I#8217;m not sure I#8217;ve assigned any [I believe] students need a certain amount of practice for each new concept. That amount certainly varies by creative, the student, however. [And] if my kids evaluate and graph forty points over a class period, why would I send them home with any more?#8230;.The issue for most math teachers, I believe, is one of time management.

The only year I assigned homework with any regularity was during my student-teaching, when my class management plainly sucked. By assigning whatever practice we didn#8217;t finish [as] homework, I was transferring the cost of my poor teaching onto my students.#8221; [Mr. What Did Blaise Pascal Invent. Meyer investigated this issue for his Masters thesis and found no statistically significant difference in achievement between students who were and were not assigned homework. Essay. Students#8217; attitudes about learning, and factory about math, were much lower for those who got homework, however.] #8212; Dan Meyer, high school math teacher in CA [from his blog] #8220;I always felt weird about assigning specific books for kids to essay read. How could you possibly find a book that is at all 34 kids#8217; reading levels. Not to mention the Should be Manadatory? Essay, fact they would all have to be excited about reading the book! . . . [With most homework, students] do what they already did in class, and the ones that get it waste their time doing it again and the ones that didn#8217;t just get discouraged and struggle through it. It particularly would break my heart when parents would tell me. . . how nights would be ruined. How could any teacher not feel bad about that? Then I would correct it and put it in their files and then they would stuff it in their backpacks never to be looked at creative again.

Not to mention the Should Uniforms, inequity of creative, some kids#8217; parents being able to Should Uniforms be Manadatory? Essay help and some not. Creative. . . . I have gone from assigning pre-arranged one-size-fits-all drill homework to virtually none now.#8221; #8212; Richard Coleman, San Diego teacher. #8220;Assigning homework was something I did without really thinking because it was something that had always been done. Not assigning homework has drastically cut down on definition the amount of time I spend mindlessly grading student homework and has increased the creative essay, amount of time I spend preparing for Schools be Manadatory? Essay, lessons . Essay. . Pink Ghetto. . looking for interesting activities and finding #8216;real world#8217; examples of mathematics#8221; #8212; Kate Degner, math teacher, Williamsburg (IA) High School. [from her Master#8217;s thesis] #8220;I first read The Homework Myth while trying to get my daughter through a middle school that was obsessed with making kids do 2-3 hours of homework every night. We have since moved her to a great alternative school where homework is minimal, and creative she is making great progress. After reading your book, I thought about how I was teaching my [college] classes #8212; lecture, then assign pages in the text workbook to be turned in at the next class. Did Blaise Invent. What is Critique? An Essay on Foucaults Virtue. What is it to offer a critique? [1]This is something that, I would wager, most of us understand in some ordinary sense. Essay! But matters become more vexing if we attempt to distinguish between a critique of this or that position and critique as a more generalized practice, one that might be described without reference to its specific objects. Can we even ask such a question about the generalized character of critique without gesturing toward an essence of critique? And if we achieved the generalized picture, offering something which approaches a philosophy of pink ghetto, critique, would we then lose the very distinction between philosophy and critique that operates as part of the definition of critique itself? Critique is always a critique of some instituted practice, discourse, episteme, institution, and it loses its character the moment in which it is abstracted from its operation and made to stand alone as a purely generalizable practice. But if this is true, this does not mean that no generalizations are possible or that, indeed, we are mired in particularisms. On the contrary, we tread here in an area of constrained generality, one which broaches the philosophical, but must, if it is to essay, remain critical, remain at a distance from that very achievement. The essay I offer here is about Foucault, but let me begin by suggesting what I take to be an interesting parallel between what Raymond Williams and Theodor Adorno, in different ways, sought to accomplish under the name of criticism and what Foucault sought to understand by To Be The Tale Of The Big Bad Little Businesses, critique. I maintain that something of Foucaults own contribution to, and alliance with, a progressive political philosophy will be made clear in the course of the comparison. Raymond Williams worried that the notion of criticism has been unduly restricted to essay, the notion of To Be The Tale Little, fault-finding[2] and proposed that we find a vocabulary for the kinds of responses we have, specifically to cultural works, which [do] not assume the habit (or right or duty) of judgment. And what he called for was a more specific kind of creative essay, response, one that did not generalize too quickly: what always needs to be understood, he wrote, is the specificity of the response, which is not a judgment, but a practice.(76) I believe this last line also marks the Schools Uniforms trajectory of Foucaults thinking on this topic, since critique is creative essay, precisely a practice that not only suspends judgment for him, but offers a new practice of values based on that very suspension.

So, for Williams, the practice of Should Essay, critique is not reducible to arriving at judgments (and expressing them). Creative! Significantly, Adorno makes a similar claim when he writes of the timing devices danger. of judging intellectual phenomena in a subsumptive, uninformed and administrative manner and assimilating them into the prevailing constellations of power which the intellect ought to expose.[3] So, the creative essay task of exposing those constellations of power is impeded by the rush to judgment as the did blaise invent exemplary act of critique. For Adorno, the very operation of judgment serves to essay, separate the critic from the social world at hand, a move which deratifies the results of its own operation, constituting a withdrawal from praxis. (23) Adorno writes that the critics very sovereignty, the claim to a more profound knowledge of the object, the separation of the idea from its object through the independence of the critical judgment threatens to succumb to the thinglike form of the object when cultural criticism appeals to a collection of ideas on display, as it were, and pink ghetto, fetishizes isolated categories.(23) For critique to operate as part of a praxis, for Adorno, is for it to apprehend the ways in creative which categories are themselves instituted, how the field of knowledge is factory system, ordered, and how what it suppresses returns, as it were, as its own constitutive occlusion. Creative Essay! Judgments operate for both thinkers as ways to subsume a particular under an already constituted category, whereas critique asks after the occlusive constitution of the field of categories themselves. What becomes especially important for Foucault in timing devices this domain, to try to think the problem of creative, freedom and, indeed, ethics in To Be Or Not To Be Online: Big Bad Web And The Three Businesses general, beyond judgment: critical thinking constitutes this kind of effort. In 1978, Foucault delivered a lecture entitled, What is Critique?,[4] a piece that prepared the way for his more well-known essay, What is Enlightenment? (1984). He not only asks what critique is, but seeks to understand the kind of question that critique institutes, offering some tentative ways of essay, circumscribing its activity. What remains perhaps most important about that lecture, and the more developed essay that followed, is the Or Not To Be Online: The Tale Of The Web And The Three Little question form in which the matter is put. For the very question, what is critique? is an instance of the creative essay critical enterprise in question, and so the question not only poses the problemwhat is shakespeare, this critique that we supposedly do or, indeed, aspire to do?but enacts a certain mode of questioning which will prove central to the activity of critique itself.

Indeed, I would suggest that what Foucault seeks to do with this question is something quite different from what we have perhaps come to creative essay, expect from critique. Timing Devices! Habermas made the creative essay operation of critique quite problematic when he suggested that a move beyond critical theory was required if we are to seek recourse to norms in making evaluative judgments about social conditions and social goals. The perspective of critique, in his view, is Should Uniforms be Manadatory? Essay, able to call foundations into creative question, denaturalize social and political hierarchy, and even establish perspectives by which a certain distance on the naturalized world can be had. But none of these activities can tell us in what direction we ought to move, nor can they tell us whether the activities in which we engage are realizing certain kinds of normatively justified goals. Hence, in his view, critical theory had to give way to a stronger normative theory, such as communicative action, in order to supply a foundation for pink ghetto critical theory, enabling strong normative judgments to be made,[5] and for politics not only to have a clear aim and normative aspiration, but for us to be able to evaluate current practices in terms of their abilities to reach those goals.

In making this kind of criticism of creative essay, critique, Habermas became curiously uncritical about the timing devices very sense of normativity he deployed. For the creative question, what are we to do? presupposes that the we has been formed and timing devices, that it is known, that its action is possible, and creative essay, the field in which it might act is delimited. But if those very formations and delimitations have normative consequences, then it will be necessary to ask after the values that set the stage for action, and this will be an important dimension of any critical inquiry into normative matters. And though the Habermasians may have an answer to pink ghetto, this problem, my aim today is not to creative essay, rehearse these debates nor to factory, answer them, but to mark the distance between a notion of critique that is characterized as normatively impoverished in some sense, and another, which I hope to essay, offer here, which is not only more complex than the usual criticism assumes but which has, I would argue, strong normative commitments that appear in forms that would be difficult, if not impossible, to read within the current grammars of normativity. Indeed, in what did blaise this essay, I hope to show that Foucault not only makes an important contribution to creative essay, normative theory, but that both his aesthetics and his account of the subject are integrally related to both his ethics and politics.

Whereas some have dismissed him as an aesthete or, indeed, as a nihilist, I hope to suggest that the foray he makes into the topic of self-making and, by shakespeare on marriage, presupposition, into poiesis itself is central to the politics of essay, desubjugation that he proposes. Paradoxically, self-making and desubjugation happen simultaneously when a mode of existence is risked which is unsupported by what he calls the regime the truth. Foucault begins his discussion by affirming that there are various grammars for the term, critique, distinguishing between a high Kantian enterprise called critique as well as the little polemical activities that are called critique (24) Thus, he warns us at the outset that critique will not be one thing, and that we will not be able to define it apart from the various objects by which it itself is shakespeare, defined. By its function, he writes [critique] seems to be condemned to dispersion, dependency and pure heteronomy. It only exists in relation to something other than itself. Thus, Foucault seeks to essay, define critique, but finds that only a series of approximations are possible. Critique will be dependent on its objects, but its objects will in turn define the very meaning of critique. Further, the primary task of critique will not be to evaluate whether its objects social conditions, practices, forms of knowledge, power, and discourseare good or bad, valued highly or demeaned, but to did blaise, bring into relief the very framework of evaluation itself. What is the relation of knowledge to power such that our epistemological certainties turn out to support a way of structuring the world that forecloses alternative possibilities of ordering? Of course, we may think that we need epistemological certainty in order to state for creative essay sure that the world is and ought to shakespeare on marriage, be ordered a given way.

To what extent, however, is that certainty orchestrated by forms of knowledge precisely in order to foreclose the possibility of thinking otherwise? Now, one might wisely ask, what good is thinking otherwise, if we dont know in advance that thinking otherwise will produce a better world? If we do not have a moral framework in which to decide with knowingness that certain new possibilities or ways of thinking otherwise will bring forth that world whose betterness we can judge by sure and already established standards? This has become something of a regular rejoinder to Foucault and creative, the Foucaultian-minded. And shall we assume that the relative silence that has greeted this habit of fault-finding in Foucault is a sign that his theory has no reassuring answers to give? I think we can assume that the answers that are being proffered do not have reassurance as their primary aim. This is, of course, not to Schools Essay, say what withdraws reassurance is, by definition, not an answer. Indeed, the only rejoinder, it seems to creative essay, me, is to return to a more fundamental meaning of critique in order to see what may well be wrong with the question as it is posed and, indeed, to pose the question anew, so that a more productive approach to the place of ethics within politics might be mapped. Schools Uniforms! One might wonder, indeed, whether what I mean by productive will be gauged by standards and measures that I am willing to reveal, or which I grasp in full at the moment in which I make such a claim. But here I would ask for your patience since it turns out that critique is a practice that requires a certain amount of patience in the same way that reading, according to Nietzsche, required that we act a bit more like cows than humans and learn the art of creative essay, slow rumination. Foucaults contribution to what appears as an impasse within critical and post-critical theory of pink ghetto, our time is creative, precisely to ask us to rethink critique as a practice in which we pose the question of the limits of our most sure ways of shakespeare, knowing, what Williams referred to as our uncritical habits of creative essay, mind and Or Not Online: The Tale Web And The Three, what Adorno described as ideology (where the unideological thought is that which does not permit itself to be reduced to operational terms and instead strives solely to essay, help the things themselves to that articulation from what pascal invent, which they are otherwise cut off by the prevailing language.[29]) One does not drive to the limits for a thrill experience, or because limits are dangerous and sexy, or because it brings us into a titillating proximity with evil.

One asks about the limits of ways of knowing because one has already run up against creative, a crisis within the epistemological field in which one lives. The categories by which social life are ordered produce a certain incoherence or entire realms of unspeakability. And it is from this condition, the tear in the fabric of pink ghetto, our epistemological web, that the creative essay practice of critique emerges, with the awareness that no discourse is adequate here or that our reigning discourses have produced an impasse. What! Indeed, the very debate in essay which the strong normative view wars with critical theory may produce precisely that form of discursive impasse from which the necessity and urgency of critique emerges. For Foucault, critique is a means for a future or a truth that it will not know nor happen to be, it oversees a domain it would not want to police and is unable to regulate. So critique will be that perspective on established and ordering ways of knowing which is not immediately assimilated into on marriage that ordering function. Significantly, for Foucault, this exposure of the limit of the epistemological field is linked with the practice of virtue, as if virtue is counter to regulation and order, as if virtue itself is to be found in the risking of creative, established order. He is not shy about the relation here. He writes, there is timing devices, something in critique that is essay, akin to virtue. And then he says something which might be considered even more surprising: this critical attitude [is] virtue in general. (25)

There are some preliminary ways we can understand Foucaults effort to what did blaise pascal invent, cast critique as virtue. Essay! Virtue is most often understood either as an did blaise, attribute or a practice of a subject, or indeed a quality that conditions and characterizes a certain kind of action or practice. It belongs to an ethics which is not fulfilled merely by following objectively formulated rules or laws. And virtue is not only a way of complying with or conforming with preestablished norms. Essay! It is, more radically, a critical relation to those norms, one which, for Foucault, takes shape as a specific stylization of morality. Foucault gives us an indication of what he means by virtue in the introduction to To Be To Be Online: Big Bad Businesses, The Use of Pleasure: The History of Sexuality, Volume Two. [6] At this juncture he makes clear that he seeks to move beyond a notion of creative, ethical philosophy that issues a set of prescriptions. Just as critique intersects with philosophy without quite coinciding with it, so Foucault in that introduction seeks to make of his own thought an example of a non-prescriptive form of moral inquiry. In the same way, he will later ask about forms of moral experience that are not rigidly defined by a juridical law, a rule or command to which the self is said mechanically or uniformly to submit. The essay that he writes, he tells us, is itself the example of such a practice, to explore what might be changed, in timing devices its own thought, through the practice of a knowledge that is creative, foreign to it. (9) Moral experience has to do with a self-transformation prompted by a form of knowledge that is foreign to timing devices, ones own. And this form of moral experience will be different from the creative submission to a command. Indeed, to the extent that Foucault interrogates moral experience here or elsewhere, he understands himself to be making an inquiry into To Be The Tale Big Bad The Three moral experiences that are not primarily or fundamentally structured by prohibition or interdiction.

In the first volume of The History of Sexuality ,[7] he sought to creative, show that the primary interdictions assumed by psychoanalysis and the structuralist account of system definition, cultural prohibitions cannot be assumed as historical constants. Moreover, historiographically considered, moral experience cannot be understood through recourse to a prevailing set of interdictions within a given historical time. Although there are codes to essay, be studied, these codes must always be studied in relation to the modes of subjectivation to pascal invent, which they correspond. He makes the creative essay claim that the juridification of Should Uniforms, law achieves a certain hegemony within the thirteenth century, but that if one goes back to Greek and essay, Roman classical cultures, one finds practices, or arts of existence (10) which have to do with a cultivated relation of the self to itself. Introducing the notion of arts of existence, Foucault also reintroduces and reemphasizes intentional and voluntary actions, specifically, those actions by Schools Essay, which men not only set themselves rules of conduct, but also seek to transform themselves in their singular being, and to make their life into an oeuvre. Such lives do not simply conform to moral precepts or norms in such a way that selves, considered preformed or ready-made, fit themselves into a mold that is essay, set forth by the precept. On the contrary, the self fashions itself in terms of the norm, comes to inhabit and incorporate the norm, but the pink ghetto norm is not in this sense external to the principle by which the self is formed . What is at issue for him is not behaviors or ideas or societies or ideologies, but the problematizations through which being offers itself to be, necessarily, thoughtand the practices on creative essay the basis of which these problematizations are formed.(11)

This last claim is hardly transparent, but what it suggests is shakespeare, that certain kinds of practices which are designed to handle certain kinds of problems produce, over time, a settled domain of ontology as their consequence, and this ontological domain, in turn, constrains our understanding of what is possible. Only with reference to this prevailing ontological horizon, itself instituted through a set of creative essay, practices, will we be able to understand the kinds of relations to moral precepts that have been formed as well as those that are yet to be formed. For instance, he considers at To Be To Be Of The Big Bad Web And The Three, length various practices of austerity, and he ties these to the production of creative essay, a certain kind of masculine subject. The practices of austerity do not attest to Should Uniforms be Manadatory? Essay, a single and abiding prohibition, but work in the service of crafting a certain kind of essay, self. Or put in a more precise way, the self, incorporating the rules of conduct that represent the virtue of austerity, creates itself as a specific kind of subject.

This self-production is the elaboration and stylization of an activity in the exercise of its power and the practice of its liberty. This was not a practice that opposed pleasure pure and simple, but a certain practice of pleasure itself (24), a practice of pleasure in the context of Schools Essay, moral experience. Thus, in section 3 of that same introduction, Foucault makes clear that it will not suffice to offer a chronicled history of moral codes, for such a history cannot tell us how these codes were lived and, more specifically, what forms of subject-formation such codes required and facilitated. Here he begins to sound like a phenomenologist. But there is, in essay addition to the recourse to timing devices, the experiential means by which moral categories are grasped, a critical move as well, for the subjective relation to essay, those norms will be neither predictable nor mechanical. The relation will be critical in the sense that it will not comply with a given category, but rather constitute an interrogatory relation to the field of categorization itself, referring at shakespeare, least implicitly to the limits of the epistemological horizon within which practices are formed. The point will not be to refer practice to a pregiven epistemological context, but to establish critique as the very practice that exposes the limits of creative, that epistemological horizon itself, making the contours of the be Manadatory? horizon appear, as it were, for the first time, we might say, in relation to its own limit.

Moreover, the critical practice in question turns out to essay, entail self-transformation in relation to a rule of conduct. How, then, does self-transformation lead to the exposure of this limit? How is self-transformation understood as a practice of liberty, and how is this practice understood as part of Foucaults lexicon of virtue? Let us begin first by on marriage, understanding the notion of self-transformation at stake here, and then consider how it is related to the problem called critique which forms the focus of our deliberations here. It is, of course, one thing to conduct oneself in relation to a code of conduct, and it is another thing to form oneself as an creative essay, ethical subject in relation to a code of conduct (and it will be yet another thing to form oneself as that which risks the orderliness of the code itself). The rules of chastity provide an important example for be Manadatory? Foucault. There is a difference, for instance, in not acting on essay desires that would violate a precept to pascal invent, which one is morally bound and developing a practice of desire, so to speak, which is essay, informed by a certain ethical project or task. The model according to which submitting to a rule of system definition, law is required would involve one in not acting in certain ways, installing an creative essay, effective prohibition against the acting out of certain desires. But the model which Foucault seeks to understand and, indeed, to what, incorporate and exemplify takes moral prescription to participate in the forming of a kind of action. Foucaults point here seems to be that renunciation and proscription do not necessarily enjoin a passive or non-active ethical mode, but form instead an ethical mode of conduct and creative essay, a way of stylizing both action and pleasure. I believe this contrast that Foucault lays out between a command-based ethics and the ethical practice which centrally engages the formation of the self sheds important light on pink ghetto the distinction between obedience and virtue that he offers in creative essay his essay, What is Critique? Foucault contrasts this yet to be defined understanding of virtue with obedience, showing how the possibility of this form of virtue is established through its difference from an timing devices, uncritical obedience to authority.

The resistance to authority, of course, constitutes the hallmark of the Enlightenment for Foucault. And he offers us a reading of the Enlightenment which not only establishes his own continuity with its aims, but reads his own dilemmas back into essay the history of the Enlightenment itself. The account he provides is one that no Enlightenment thinker would accept, but this resistance would not invalidate the characterization at hand, for what Foucault seeks in the characterization of the Enlightenment is precisely what remains unthought within its own terms: hence, his is a critical history. In his view, critique begins with questioning the what did blaise demand for absolute obedience and subjecting every governmental obligation imposed on subjects to a rational and essay, reflective evaluation. Timing Devices! Although Foucault will not follow this turn to reason, he will nevertheless ask what criteria delimit the sorts of reasons that can come to bear on the question of obedience. He will be particularly interested in essay the problem of how that delimited field forms the subject and how, in turn, a subject comes to form and reform those reasons.

This capacity to form reasons will be importantly linked to the self-transformative relation mentioned above. To be critical of an authority that poses as absolute requires a critical practice that has self-transformation at its core. But how do we move from understanding the reasons we might have for consenting to a demand to forming those reasons for ourselves, to transforming ourselves in the course of producing those reasons (and, finally, putting at risk the field of reason itself)? Are these not distinct kinds of what did blaise invent, problems, or does one invariably lead to creative, the other? Is the autonomy achieved in forming reasons which serve as the basis for accepting or rejecting a pregiven law the timing devices same as the transformation of the self that takes place when a rule becomes incorporated into the very action of the subject?

As we shall see, both the essay transformation of the self in relation to ethical precepts and the practice of critique are considered forms of art, stylizations and repetitions, suggesting that there is no possibility of accepting or refusing a rule without a self who is stylized in response to the ethical demand upon it. In the context where obedience is required, Foucault locates the desire that informs the question, how not to be governed? (28) This desire, and the wonderment that follows from it, forms the central impetus of critique. Should Uniforms Be Manadatory?! It is of course unclear how the desire not to be governed is essay, linked with virtue. He does make clear, however, that he is not posing the possibility of radical anarchy, and that the question is not how to system, become radically ungovernable. It is a specific question that emerges in relation to a specific form of government: how not to be governed like that , by that, in creative the name of those principles, with such and such an objective in Should Uniforms be Manadatory? mind and by means of such procedures, not like that, not for that, not by them. This becomes the signature mark of the critical attitude(28) and its particular virtue. For Foucault, the question itself inaugurates both a moral and political attitude, the art of not being governed or, better, the art of not being governed like that and at that cost.(29) Whatever virtue Foucault here circumscribes for us will have to do with objecting to that imposition of power, to its costs, to the way in essay which it is administered, to those who do that administering. One might be tempted to think that Foucault is simply describing resistance, but here it seems that virtue has taken the place of that term, or becomes the shakespeare on marriage means by which it is redescribed. We will have to ask why. Moreover, this virtue is described as well as an creative, art, the art of not being governed quite so much, so what is the pink ghetto relation between aesthetics and creative, ethics at work here?

He finds the origins of critique in the relation of resistance to what pascal invent, ecclesiastical authority. In relation to essay, church doctrine, not wanting to Uniforms be Manadatory? Essay, be governed was a certain way of refusing, challenging, limiting (say it as you like) ecclesiastical rule. Creative! It meant returning to the Scriptures. it meant questioning what kind of truth the pink ghetto Scriptures told. (30). And this objection was clearly waged in the name of an alternative or, minimally, emerging ground of truth and of justice. This leads Foucault to formulate a second definition of critique: Not to want to essay, be governed. not wanting to accept these laws because they are unjust because. they hide a fundamental illegitimacy.(30) Critique is that which exposes this illegitimacy, but it is not because critique has recourse to a more fundamental political or moral order. Foucault writes that the critical project is confronted with government and the obedience it stipulates and that what critique means in this context is putting forth universal and indefeasible rights to which every government, whatever it may be, whether a monarch, a magistrate, an educator or a pater familias, will have to submit.(30). The practice of critique, however, does not discover these universal rights, as Enlightenment theorists claim, but it does put them forth. However, it does not put them forth not as positive rights. The putting forth is an act which limits the power of the law, an act which counters and rivals the workings of power, power at the moment of its renewal. This is the positing of limitation itself, one that takes form as a question and which asserts, in its very assertion, a right to question.

From the sixteenth century on, the question how not to shakespeare on marriage, be governed becomes specified as What are the limits of the right to creative essay, govern?(31) To not want to be governed is of course not accepting as true. what an authority tells you is true, or at least not accepting it because an authority tells you that it is Should Schools be Manadatory? Essay, true, but rather accepting it only if one considers valid the reasons for doing so. There is of course a fair amount of ambiguity in essay this situation, for what will constitute a ground of validity for accepting authority? Does the validity derive from the consent to accept authority? If so, does consent validate the what did blaise invent reasons offered, whatever they are? Or is it rather the case that it is only on the basis of a prior and discoverable validity that one offers ones consent? And do these prior reasons, in their validity, make the consent a valid one? If the first alternative is correct, then consent is the criterion by which validity is essay, judged, and pink ghetto, it would appear that Foucaults position reduces to essay, a form of voluntarism. But perhaps what he is offering us by way of critique is an act, even a practice of freedom, which cannot reduce to voluntarism in any easy way. For the practice by which the limits to absolute authority are set is one that is fundamentally dependent on the horizon of knowledge effects within which it operates. Pink Ghetto! The critical practice does not well up from the innate freedom of the soul, but is formed instead in the crucible of a particular exchange between a set of rules or precepts (which are already there) and a stylization of acts (which extends and reformulates that prior set of creative, rules and precepts). This stylization of the self in relation to the rules comes to count as a practice. In Foucaults view, following Kant in an attenuated sense, the act of consent is a reflexive movement by which validity is attributed to To Be Or Not To Be Online: The Tale Little Businesses, or withdrawn from creative, authority.

But this reflexivity does not take place internal to a subject. For Foucault, this is an act which poses some risk, for the point will not only be to object to this or that governmental demand, but to ask about the order in which such a demand becomes legible and Should Schools Uniforms be Manadatory?, possible. And if what one objects to are the epistemological orderings that have established the rules of governmental validity, then saying no to creative essay, the demand will require departing from the established grounds of its validity, marking the limit of that validity, which is something different and far more risky than finding a given demand invalid. In this difference, we might say, one begins to enter a critical relation to timing devices, such orderings and the ethical precepts to which they give rise. The problem with those grounds that Foucault calls illegitimate is not that they are partial or self-contradictory or that they lead to creative, hypocritical moral stands.

The problem is precisely that they seek to foreclose the critical relation, that is, to extend their own power to timing devices, order the entire field of moral and political judgment. They orchestrate and essay, exhaust the field of on marriage, certainty itself. How does one call into question the exhaustive hold that such rules of essay, ordering have upon certainty without risking uncertainty, without inhabiting that place of wavering which exposes one to the charge of immorality, evil, aestheticism. The critical attitude is not moral according to the rules whose limits that very critical relation seeks to interrogate. But how else can critique do its job without risking the shakespeare denunciations of those who naturalize and render hegemonic the very moral terms put into question by critique itself? Foucaults distinction between government and governmentalization seeks to creative, show that the apparatus denoted by the former enters into the practices of those who are being governed, their very ways of knowing, their very ways of being. To be governed is not only to have a form imposed upon ones existence, but to be given the terms within which existence will and will not be possible. A subject will emerge in relation to an established order of truth, but it can also take a point of view on that established order that retrospectively suspends its own ontological ground. If governmentalization is. this movement through which individuals are subjugated in the reality of a social practice through mechanisms of power that adhere to a truth, well, then!

I will say that critique is the movement by which the subject gives himself the right (le sujet se donne le droit) to question truth on its effects of power and question power on its discourses of truth. Timing Devices! (my emphasis, English text, 32; French text, 39) Note here that the subject is essay, said to give himself that right, a mode of self-allocation and selfauthorization that seems to pink ghetto, foreground the reflexivity of the creative essay claim. Is this, then, a self-generated movement, one which shores up the definition subject over and against a countervailing authority? And what difference does it make, if any, that this self-allocation and self-designation emerges as an art? Critique, he writes, will be the art of creative essay, voluntary insubordination, that of Should Schools Uniforms, reflected intractability [ lindocilite reflechie ]. If it is an creative, art in his sense, then critique will not be a single act, nor will it belong exclusively to a subjective domain, for it will be the stylized relation to the demand upon it. And the style will be critical to the extent that, as style, it is not fully determined in advance, it incorporates a contingency over time that marks the limits to the ordering capacity of the field in question. On Marriage! So the stylization of this will will produce a subject who is creative essay, not readily knowable under the To Be Or Not To Be Online: The Tale Of The Big Bad Web And established rubric of truth. More radically, Foucault pronounces: Critique would essentially insure the creative desubjugation [ desassujetiisement ] of the subject in the context [ le jeu ] of what we could call, in a word, the politics of truth. (32, 39) The politics of timing devices, truth pertains to those relations of power that circumscribe in advance what will and will not count as truth, which order the world in certain regular and regulatable ways, and which we come to accept as the given field of knowledge. Creative! We can understand the salience of what pascal, this point when we begin to ask: What counts as a person? What counts as a coherent gender?

What qualifies as a citizen? Whose world is legitimated as real? Subjectively, we ask: Who can I become in such a world where the meanings and limits of the subject are set out in advance for me? By what norms am I constrained as I begin to ask what I may become? And what happens when I begin to essay, become that for which there is no place within the given regime of truth? Is this not precisely what is meant by the desubjugation of the subject in the play of. the politics of what pascal, truth(my translation)? At stake here is the relation between the limits of ontology and epistemology, the link between the limits of what I might become and the limits of what I might risk knowing. Deriving a sense of critique from Kant, Foucault poses the question that is the question of critique itself: Do you know up to what point you can know? Our liberty is at stake. Thus, liberty emerges at the limits of what one can know, at the very moment in which the desubjugation of the subject within the politics of truth takes place, the moment where a certain questioning practice begins that takes the creative essay following form: What, therefore, am I, I who belong to timing devices, this humanity, perhaps to this piece of it, at this point in time, at this instant of humanity which is subjected to the power of truth in general and truths in creative particular?(46) Another way of putting this is the following: What, given the contemporary order of being, can I be? If, in system posing this question, liberty is at stake, it may be that staking liberty has something to creative, do with what Foucault calls virtue, with a certain risk that is put into play through thought and, indeed, through language where the contemporary ordering of definition, being is brought to its limit. But how do we understand this contemporary order of creative essay, being in which I come to stake myself? Foucault chooses here to characterize this historically conditioned order of Or Not To Be The Tale Big Bad Businesses, being in a way that links him with the critical theory of the Frankfurt school, identifying rationalization as the governmentalizing effect on ontology. Allying himself with a Left critical tradition post-Kant, Foucault writes,

From the Hegelian Left to the Frankfurt School, there has been a complete critique of positivism, rationalization, of techne and technicalization, a whole critique of the relationships between the fundamental project of science and techniques whose objective was to show the connections between sciences naive presumptions, on one hand, and the forms of domination characteristic of contemporary society, on the other. (39) In his view, rationalization takes a new form when it comes into creative essay the service of bio-power. And what continues to be difficult for what did blaise most social actors and critics within this situation is to creative, discern the relationship between rationalization and power.(39) What appears to be a merely epistemic order, a way of ordering the world, does not readily admit of the Should Uniforms constraints by creative essay, which that ordering takes place. Pink Ghetto! Nor does it eagerly show the creative way in Should Schools Essay which the intensification and totalization of rationalizing effects leads to an intensification of power. Foucault asks, How is creative, it that rationalization leads to the furor of power?(42) Clearly, the capacity for rationalization to reach into the tributaries of life not only characterizes modes of what did blaise, scientific practice, but also social relationships, state organizations, economic practices and creative essay, perhaps even individual behaviors?(43) It reaches its furor and its limits as it seizes and pervades the subject it subjectivates. Power sets the limits to what a subject can be, beyond which it no longer is, or it dwells in a domain of what did blaise invent, suspended ontology. But power seeks to constrain the subject through the force of essay, coercion, and the resistance to be Manadatory? Essay, coercion consists in the stylization of the self at the limits of established being. One of the first tasks of critique is to discern the relation between mechanisms of essay, coercion and elements of knowledge. (50) Here again we seem confronted with the limits of what is knowable, limits which exercise a certain force without being grounded in any necessity, limits which can only timing devices be tread or interrogated by risking a certain security within an available ontology: [N]othing can exist as an element of knowledge if, on the one hand, it . does not conform to a set of essay, rules and constraints characteristic, for example, of a given type of scientific discourse in a given period, and if, on the other hand, it does not possess the effects of coercion or simply the incentives peculiar to what is scientifically validated or simply rational or simply generally accepted, etc. (52) He then continues to show that knowledge and The Tale Of The Big Bad Web And The Three Businesses, power are not finally separable, but work together to establish a set of subtle and explicit criteria for thinking the world: It is therefore not a matter of describing what knowledge is and what power is and how one would repress the other or how the other would abuse the one, but rather, a nexus of knowledge-power has to be described so that we can grasp what constitutes the acceptability of a system. (52-53)

The critic thus has a double task, to creative essay, show how knowledge and power work to constitute a more or less systematic way of ordering the world with its own conditions of acceptability of factory system definition, a system, but also to follow the breaking points which indicate its emergence. So not only is it necessary to isolate and identify the peculiar nexus of power and knowledge that gives rise to the field of intelligible things, but also to track the way in which that field meets its breaking point, the moments of its discontinuities, the sites where it fails to creative essay, constitute the timing devices intelligibility for which it stands. What this means is that one looks both for the conditions by which the object field is creative essay, constituted, but also for the limits of those conditions, the moments where they point up their contingency and their transformability. In Foucaults terms, schematically speaking, we have perpetual mobility, essential fragility or rather the complex interplay between what replicates the pink ghetto same process and creative essay, what transforms it. (58) Indeed, another way to talk about this dynamic within critique is to factory, say that rationalization meets its limits in desubjugation. If the desubjugation of the subject emerges at the moment in which the creative essay episteme constituted through rationalization exposes its limit, then desubjugation marks precisely the Or Not Online: Of The Web And The Three Businesses fragility and transformability of the epistemics of power. Critique begins with the presumption of governmentalization and then with its failure to totalize the subject its seeks to know and to creative, subjugate. But the timing devices means by which this very relation is articulated is described, in a disconcerting way, as fiction. Why would it be fiction?

And in what sense is it fiction? Foucault refers to essay, an historical-philosophical practice [in which] one had to make ones own history, fabricate history, as if through fiction [ de faire comme par fiction ], in terms of how it would be traversed by the question of the relationships between structures of rationality which articulate true discourse and the mechanisms of subjugation which are linked to it. (45, 44) There is thus a dimension of the methodology itself which partakes of fiction, which draws fictional lines between rationalization and desubjugation, between the Should Schools be Manadatory? Essay knowledge-power nexus and its fragility and limit. We are not told what sort of fiction this will be, but it seems clear that Foucault is drawing on Nietzsche and, in particular, the kind of essay, fiction that genealogy is said to be. You may remember that although it seems that for Nietzsche the genealogy of morals is the attempt to on marriage, locate the origins of values, he is creative, actually seeking to find out how the very notion of the timing devices origin became instituted. And the means by which he seeks to explain the origin is fictional. He tells a fable of the nobles, another about creative, a social contract, another about a slave revolt in shakespeare on marriage morality, and essay, yet another about creditor and debtor relations. Definition! None of these fables can be located in space or time, and any effort to try to find the historical complement to essay, Nietzsches genealogies will necessarily fail. Indeed, in the place of an account that finds the Or Not Big Bad Web And The Three Little origin to values or, indeed, the origin of the origin, we read fictional stories about the way that values are originated. A noble says something is the case and creative, it becomes the case: the speech act inaugurates the value, and becomes something like an system definition, atopical and atemporal occasion for the origination of values.

Indeed, Nietzsches own fiction-making mirrors the very acts of creative essay, inauguration that he attributes to those who make values. So he not only describes that process, but that description becomes an instance of value- production, enacting the very process that it narrates. How would this particular use of fiction relate to To Be Or Not To Be The Tale Of The Big Bad The Three, Foucaults notion of critique? Consider that Foucault is trying to understand the possibility of creative, desubjugation within rationalization without assuming that there is a source for shakespeare resistance that is housed in the subject or maintained in some foundational mode. Creative Essay! Where does resistance come from? Can it be said to be the upsurge of some human freedom shackled by the powers of rationalization? If he speaks, as he does, of a will not to be governed, how are we to understand the status of that will?

In response to a query along these lines, he remarks. I do not think that the will not to be governed at all is something that one could consider an Schools be Manadatory?, originary aspiration ( je ne pense pas en effet que la volonte de netre pas gouverne du tout soit quelque chose que lon puisse considerer comme une aspiration originaire) . I think that, in creative essay fact, the will not to on marriage, be governed is always the will not to be governed thusly, like that, by these people, at this price. (72) He goes on to warn against the absolutizing of essay, this will that philosophy is definition, always tempted to perform. He seeks to avoid what he calls the philosophical and theoretical paroxysm of something that would be this will not to be relatively governed.(72-73) He makes clear that accounting for this will involves him in essay a problem of the shakespeare origin, and creative essay, he comes quite close to ceding the terrain, but a certain Nietzschean reluctance prevails. He writes, I was not referring to something that would be a fundamental anarchism, that would be like an originary freedom ( qui serait comme la liberte originaire ), absolutely and To Be Or Not To Be Online: The Tale, wholeheartedly ( absolument et en son fond) resistant to any governmentalization. I did not say it, but this does not mean that I absolutely exclude it ( Je ne lai pas dit, mais cela ne veut pas dire que je lexclus absolument ). I think that my presentation stops at this point, because it was already too long, but also because I am wondering ( mais aussi parce que je me demande ). if one wants to explore this dimension of essay, critique that seems to me to be so important because it is both part of, and not part of, philosophy. it is supported by Or Not To Be Of The Big Bad The Three Little Businesses, something akin ( qui serait ou ) to the historical practice of revolt, the non-acceptance of a real government, on one hand, or, on creative the other, the timing devices individual refusal of governmentality.(72-73, 59) Whatever this is that one draws upon as one resists governmentalization will be like an originary freedom and something akin to creative, the historical practice of revolt (my emphasis). Like them, indeed, but apparently not quite the same.

As for Foucaults mention of To Be Or Not The Tale Web And The Three Little, originary freedom, he offers and withdraws it at creative, once. I did not say it, he remarks, after coming quite close to saying it, after showing us how he almost said it, after exercising that very proximity in the open for us in what can be understood as something of a tease. What discourse nearly seduces him here, subjugating him to its terms? And how does he draw from the very terms that he refuses? What art form is this in which a nearly collapsible critical distance is performed for pink ghetto us? And is this the essay same distance that informs the practice of wondering, of questioning? What limits of knowing does he dare to broach as he wonders out loud for us? The inaugural scene of on marriage, critique involves the art of voluntary insubordination, and the voluntary or, indeed, originary freedom is given here, but in the form of a conjecture, in a form of art that suspends ontology and brings us into the suspension of disbelief.

Foucault finds a way to say originary freedom, and I suppose that it gives him great pleasure to utter these words, pleasure and fear. He speaks them, but only through staging the words, relieving himself of an ontological commitment, but releasing the words themselves for a certain use. Does he refer to originary freedom here? Does he seek recourse to it? Has he found the creative well of timing devices, originary freedom and drunk from it? Or does he, significantly, posit it, mention it, say it without quite saying it? Is he invoking it so that we might relive its resonances, and know its power? The staging of the term is not its assertion, but we might say that the assertion is staged, rendered artfully, subjected to an ontological suspension, precisely so it might be spoken. Creative Essay! And that it is this speech act, the one which for timing devices a time relieves the phrase, originary freedom, from the epistemic politics within which it lives which also performs a certain desubjugation of the subject within the politics of truth. For when one speaks in that way, one is gripped and freed by the words one nevertheless says. Of course, politics is not simply a matter of speaking, and I do not mean to rehabilitate Aristotle in the form of Foucault (although, I confess, that such a move intrigues me, and I mention it here to offer it as a possibility without committing myself to it at essay, once).

In this verbal gesture toward the end of his lecture, a certain freedom is what did blaise pascal invent, exemplified, not by the reference to the term without any foundational anchor, but by the artful performance of creative, its release from Should Schools Uniforms, its usual discursive constraints, from the conceit that one might only utter it knowing in advance what its anchor must be. Foucaults gesture is essay, oddly brave, I would suggest, for it knows that it cannot ground the claim of original freedom. This not knowing permits for the particular use it has within his discourse. He braves it anyway, and so his mention, his insistence, become an factory, allegory for a certain risk-taking that happens at the limit of the epistemological field. And this becomes a practice of essay, virtue, perhaps, and not, as his critics profess, a sign of pink ghetto, moral despair, precisely to the extent that the practice of this kind of essay, speaking posits a value which it does not know how to ground or to secure for itself, posits it anyway, and thereby shows that a certain intelligibility exceeds the limits on intelligibility that power-knowledge has already set. This is virtue in the minimal sense precisely because it offers the perspective by which the subject gains a critical distance on established authority.

But it is also an act of pink ghetto, courage, acting without guarantees, risking the subject at essay, the limits of its ordering. Who would Foucault be if he were to utter such words? What desubjugation does he perform for us with this utterance? To gain a critical distance from established authority means for Foucault not only to recognize the ways in which the coercive effects of knowledge are at work in subject-formation itself, but to risk ones very formation as a subject. Thus, in The Subject and Power,[8] Foucault will claim this form of timing devices, power [that] applies itself to immediate, everyday life which categorizes the individual, marks him by his own individuality, attaches him to essay, his own identity, imposes a law of truth on him which he must recognize and which others have to recognize in him.(212) And when that law falters or is broken, the very possibility of recognition is imperiled. So when we ask how we might say originary freedom, and say it in the wondering, we also put into factory system question the subject who is said to creative essay, be rooted in that term, releasing it, paradoxically, for a venture which might actually give the term new substance and possibility. In concluding, I would simply return to the introduction to timing devices, The Use of Pleasure where Foucault defines the practices that concern him, the arts of existence (10), as having to do with a cultivated relation of the self to itself.

This kind of creative, formulation brings us closer to To Be Or Not Online: Of The Little Businesses, the strange sort of virtue that Foucaults antifoundationalism comes to represent. Indeed, as I wrote earlier, when he introduces the notion of arts of existence, Foucault also refers to such arts of existence as producing subjects who seek to transform themselves in their singular being, and to creative, make their life into an oeuvre. We might think that this gives support to the charge that Foucault has fully aestheticized existence at the expense of ethics, but I would suggest only that he has shown us that there can be no ethics, and no politics, without recourse to this singular sense of poiesis. The subject who is on marriage, formed by the principles furnished by the discourse of truth is not yet the subject who endeavors to form itself. Engaged in creative essay arts of existence, this subject is both crafted and crafting, and pink ghetto, the line between how it is formed, and how it becomes a kind of essay, forming, is not easily, if ever drawn. For it is not the case that a subject is formed and then turns around and factory system definition, begins suddenly to form itself.

On the contrary, the formation of the subject is the creative essay institution of the very reflexivity that indistinguishably assumes the burden of formation. The indistinguishability of shakespeare on marriage, this line is precisely the juncture where social norms intersect with ethical demands, and where both are produced in creative the context of timing devices, a self-making which is never fully self-inaugurated. Although Foucault refers quite straightforwardly to intention and deliberation in this text, he also lets us know how difficult it will be to understand this self-stylization in creative essay terms of any received understanding of intention and deliberation. For an understanding of the revision of terms that his usage requires, Foucault introduces the be Manadatory? terms, modes of subjection or subjectivation. These terms do not simply relate the way a subject is formed, but how it becomes self-forming. This becoming of an creative essay, ethical subject is not a simple matter of self-knowledge or self-awareness; it denotes a process in which the individual delimits that part of himself that will form the factory object of his moral practice. The self delimits itself, and decides on essay the material for its self-making, but the delimitation that the self performs takes place through norms which are, indisputably, already in To Be To Be Online: Of The Big Bad Web And place. Thus, if we think this aesthetic mode of creative essay, self-making is contextualized within ethical practice, he reminds us that this ethical labor can only take place within a wider political context, the politics of norms. Pascal Invent! He makes clear that there is no self-forming outside of a mode of subjectivation, which is to say, there is no self-forming outside of the norms that orchestrate the essay possible formation of the subject. (28) We have moved quietly from the discursive notion of the subject to a more psychologically resonant notion of self, and it may be that for Foucault the latter term carries more agency than the former. The self forms itself, but it forms itself within a set of formative practices that are characterized as modes of subjectivations. That the range of its possible forms is delimited in advance by such modes of subjectivation does not mean that the self fails to form itself, that the self is fully formed.

On the contrary, it is compelled to form itself, but to form itself within forms that are already more or less in operation and underway. Or, one might say, it is compelled to form itself within practices that are more or less in place. But if that selfforming is done in disobedience to the principles by which one is formed, then virtue becomes the practice by which the self forms itself in desubjugation, which is to say that it risks its deformation as a subject, occupying that ontologically insecure position which poses the question anew: who will be a subject here, and what will count as a life, a moment of ethical questioning which requires that we break the habits of judgment in favor of a riskier practice that seeks to yield artistry from shakespeare, constraint. The BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico essay. This report discusses the issue of concern because an oil spill is considered to be a disaster for both for human beings and the environment. The BP oil spill in essay the Gulf of Mexico is Or Not To Be Online: Big Bad The Three Businesses no exception. Essay! The oil spill affected both human beings and the environment, polluting and damaging vast areas of the adjacent territories and the large populations of wildlife. The BP oil spill caused a serious damage not only to the marine life, but also to the human factor, including wild inhabitants, fishing and tourism industry in Uniforms be Manadatory? the Gulf of essay, Mexico (Tangley, 2010). A large number of factors, including Petroleum toxicity, Corexit dispersant usage and oxygen depletion can be viewed as the major causes of the disaster which led to the negative impact on ecological system (Smithsona Venette, 2013). In this paper, the major risk management issues, which illustrate the case, are identified. Timing Devices! Among these risk management issues are slow response to the crisis, as the oil spill took several weeks to essay, stop.

The results of risk management assessment demonstrate that loss prevention measures in the case of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 were in place to prevent the oil spillage starting and the proper cost containment steps were taken to manage the cost of the Or Not To Be Online: Big Bad Little Businesses required clean-up operations, recovery procedures to promote business continuation, many days had been lost. Second, the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico demonstrated poor governance of organization as the company lacked the effective crisis plan. Thus, the BP oil spill in essay the Gulf of factory system definition, Mexico case can be used to teach people lesson how to effectively use risk management and crisis management practices in essay addressing unexpected disasters. To manage the crisis, a special plan should be developed and tested. Any company should six stages of crisis management to remain successful on the competitive market.

The companys leaders should demonstrate their remarkable leadership capabilities, serving their companies, employees and communities. The Gulf of Mexico is one of the most valuable territories because of the availability of the great variety of marine life, including fish, shrimp and other species. The coasts of the Gulf of Should Schools Uniforms, Mexico are the best place for essay, seabirds nests and definition turtles nesting. However, the most valuable treasure for creative essay, economic development of the country is the richest reserve of oil and natural gas. In general, there are more than 4,000 offshore rigs in the Gulf of timing devices, Mexico designed for drilling gas and oil (Chiang et al., 2010). According to researchers, many people who live in the five U.S. states that border the Gulf of Mexico (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida) depend on the Gulf for jobs and survival(Chiang et al., 2010, p. 5). One more important function of the Gulf of Mexico is the growing fishing industry that provides over 1.3 pounds of fish and shellfish each year. This information helps to better understand the negative consequences of the BP oil spill in creative the Gulf of shakespeare, Mexico that occurred on April 20, 2010.

The negative effects from oil spill have been widely discussed in scientific literature. Creative Essay! These effects include species-specific effects, effects on the near shore environment, serious trophic effects through oil contamination of system, sediments, various site-specific effects, and essay the effects on drilling discharges (Lin Mendelssohn, 2012). Based on recent research findings, the BP oil spill in system the Gulf of Mexico that followed the explosion of the exploration platform Deepwater Horizon on 20 April 2010 was the largest accidental oil spill in America that requires finding the proper solutions to develop effective risk management practices. It is very important to find out if an accident of this size could have been expected (Acton, 2013, p. 501). The general aims of the analysis presented in creative this paper include: providing an overview of the key facts surrounding the case identification of the major risk management issues identified in the case Comparing and contrast the way in which these three risk management issues were dealt with by the firm(s) involved with material presented in the course or other reference material dealing with the concepts or issues that the To Be Or Not To Be Online: Big Bad Web And case illustrates Assessment of the effectiveness with which the crisis, created as a result of the failures in risk management evident in the case, were managed Identification of the essay lessons that can be learned from the case, providing conclusions and the nature of any control procedures and/or risk treatment systems that should have been implemented or where failures occurred. This report is significant for timing devices, assessment of the key risk management issues that are associated with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The BPs handling of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that occurred in 2010 teaches people some important crisis management lessons.

Actually, the work on oil platforms is automated, but human errors often occur on these structures (Smithsona Venette, 2013). Creative! According to researchers, these oil drilling rigs are considered to be the largest movable human-made structures in the world, as such they have become virtual cities afloat that will always have minor equipment failure and human error, not to mention working in To Be Or Not To Be Big Bad Web And The Three Little Businesses hurricane-prone environments (Ostrom Wilhelmsen, 2012, p. Creative Essay! 23). The Deepwater Horizon platform is no exception, as it has a long history of oil spillages and timing devices fires that occurred before the oil spillage of creative, 2010. The Deepwater platform operates day and night; therefore, some problems with equipment may appear on a regular basis. This report is factory definition aimed at giving explanation of some important risk management practices that should be taken into consideration by other companies to avoid negative consequences, similar to the Deepwater Horizon platforms disaster. Case Study Description of the key facts surrounding the case. The BP oil spill in the Gulf of essay, Mexico is considered to be the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of petroleum industry, being 8%-31% larger in volume that the previous largest oil spill, the Ixtos I oil spill (Holland Schemwell, 2014, p. 23).

The BP oil disaster is often called the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. It occurred on 20 April 2010 in timing devices the Gulf of Mexico on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect. Actually, the BP oil spill can be viewed as the creative essay worst environmental disaster in America. The BP oil spill occurred near Mississippi River Delta, as a result of a deep-sea floor oil gusher, which was made by the massive explosion of the on marriage Deepwater Horizon platform, one of the most efficient and effective semi-submersible drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. It has been found that oil slick coverage was approximately 2,500 square miles in the Gulf of Mexico region. It has been reported that there were huge underwater oil plumes invisible at the surface. As a result of the massive explosion, there were many victims of this disaster; including 11 workers killed during the creative essay explosion and 17 men seriously injured (Holland Schemwell, 2014). On the To Be The Tale 15th of July, 2010, the essay gushing wellhead was capped, but the Deepwater Horizon platform released over 4.9 million barrels or 780,000 m3 of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico (Griggs, 2011). This fact means that as a result of the pink ghetto explosion, over essay, 53,000 barrels of oil were spilled each day of the accident (from July 10 till July 15) before the workers could cap the well. The experts state that for 87 days, the oil continued to flow to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, causing serious damage to the environment and local economy.

In other words, crude oil was flowing into the estuaries, marshes and beaches of Businesses, three states affected by the spillage Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi (Griggs, 2011). The U.S. government declared that the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico can be regarded as a national disaster. As a rule, an area contaminated by creative essay oil, is closely connected with the whole character of the affected environment. The free spilling of oil leads to a wide range of negative consequences, including the spread by wind and wave (Bai Bai, 2014, p. 363). The oil spillage from the Deepwater Horizon platform floating on the surface could evaporate through air and sun, spreading over the water surface. As a result, oil spillage affected the environment, including the wildlife. Identification of three major risk management issues illustrated by the case. The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that occurred in 2010 gives an opportunity to identify three major risk management issues, which can be assessed by experts as significant risk management lessons. One of the key risk management issues is that the oil spill took some weeks to timing devices, stop (Hopkin, 2012, p. 175). Although the results of risk management assessment show that loss prevention measures in the case of the creative BP oil spill were in place to prevent the oil spillage starting and the proper cost containment steps were taken to manage the cost of the what pascal invent required clean-up operations, recovery procedures to promote business continuation, much time had been lost.

According to Paul Hopkin (2012), it is, perhaps, the case that the damage limitation measures were not as robust as may have been required(p. 175). Besides, the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has raised serious risk management issues regarding the governance of organization involved in the case. Essay! Risk management and governance in the BP organization are separate activities, which have their own committees and organize their own processes to achieve the timing devices established goals. According to essay, researchers, the BP oil spill disaster has clearly shown that the board has to own both the general governance of the The Tale The Three Businesses organization and essay its many and Schools Uniforms be Manadatory? Essay varied risk activities (Wright et al., 2013, p. 16). As a result, the disaster created an enormous financial crisis, leading to creative essay, poor reputation of the BP organization. According to Otto Lerbinger (2012), its image as a leader in deep sea technology was shattered, as well as its professed dedication to timing devices, corporate social responsibility and the environment(p.

24). Essay! Now the organization needs to use the proper strategies aimed at restoring its reputation in timing devices order to successfully operate in the Gulf of Mexico. In the case discussed in this paper, the what pascal BP failed to avoid certain management errors that led to massive damage to the environment and creative caused considerable harm to people. The explosion of the Deepwater Horizon platform rig can be viewed as an pink ghetto example of creative essay, a designation that is a prevailing contention of government and other reports on the disaster (Lerbinger, 2012, p. 24).
